The books I'm including here are mostly the ones I've read over the past ten years (with one or two memorable or personally important exceptions that go further back).

About the stars:

I'm not a risky reader; I don't stray far from bestsellers, award-winners and other highly regarded or recommended books. As a result, there aren't any real clunkers in my library. So:

FIVE Stars: I try not to overuse the five stars. I save 'em for books that, for some reason, had a profound affect on me.

FOUR Stars: What I thought was an exceptional, or important, book; a book that captivated me.

THREE Stars: Really good.

TWO Stars: My bad. Probably a good book, but not for me.

ONE Star. I haven't given any single-star ratings. Honestly, I don't have any books that I didn't like that much.

I'm a slow reader, but fairly diligent about reading during the 30 minutes I spend commuting each day (on the subway, that is; not driving). As soon as I'm done with one book, I usually have another lined up. Depending on length, a book normally takes me two or three weeks; that's a little more than a book a month -- hardly enough time to read everything I need or want to. It makes me pretty careful about each new book I start: it's got to count.
