My acquaintance and love for Sci-fi started with Frank Herbert's "Dune". From Hard core classic Sci fi it was easy to expand to fantasy & para normal, from Ursula K. Le Guin, Patricia A. McKillip, J. R. R. Tolkien, Roger Zelazny and others.
