I'm reading the House of Night series and every time I finish a book I think "What a bunch of trash", throw the book down, but immediately get the next book to read. I'm addicted, but why? In 5 years the series will be dated and no one will read it because of all the references to popular culture and also teen language will change. The main character Zoey seemed to not even feel sorry when the man who took her virginity died. It's too "Paris Hiltony"--he's gone, but he was hot!

Personally, I've never read them, but I've only heard really negative things about them. I'll hear people who hate Twilight (I've read the series and like them well enough, but can see why others would have problems) say that the House of Night series is even worse.

That being said, I sort of love books that reference pop culture (even if they're trashy...which they generally are) so maybe I'll just get them from the library anyway.

The Twilight series is much better than House of Night, especially the first book which really lets the reader into the mind of a teenage girl. Readers who like Gossip Girls and vampires will probably like House of Night even though the series is not well written.

I'm a bit the same, I don't love the books, but I keep reading. I think I enjoy the concept behind the series. But the way they are written s#ts me. I put that down to the fact they're written by P.C and her daughter and that she influences the writing, I don't ever remember my conversations sounding so immature.

I've read them, too, but I wouldn't want to pay for them. It's a really interesting idea, and it has a good story line, but the writing is weak and the characters are stereotyped to the point of absurdity. I hate the language they use. I don't know any teenagers who talk that way. It's very annoying. Another problem I have with them is that they're trying to stretch out the series. Not enough happens in each book anymore to really make each book unique.

It's true they are trying to stretch out the series. Only one or two things actually happen in each book so I skip the conversations and read the action parts. I think the authors are doing this to sell as many books as possible. They must be rich by now. I just finished Burned which was more interesting than some of the other books because of the supernatural elements.

i got so bored and annoyed with all the boys. not the boys themselves but what zoey put them through. Zoey is so irritating.

I am upset that i wasted my money on books 1-5. I stopped reading at hunted...i think. its kinda bad when you cant even remember what book you read last.

SPOILER!

After heath died, I gave up the series.

So theres my opinion. =

I just finished Awakened which I enjoyed, but like others say - it's not good writing. I loved the first book because it was different and new and the idea had such potential, but it has gotten stretched out. It seems like Zoey isn't even the main character anymore, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. A lot happens in this book - it's almost like the authors heard all the criticism and decided to throw a bunch of stuff at the readers.

Me and my sisters have read all of the books in the HON series thus far, and though we will probably continue to read them, we always have complaints when were done! I especially hate all the super country similies Stevie Rae is CONSTANTLY using. "She's as slimy as chicken crap on a tin roof." That may not be one exactly, but you get my drift. They go on so far with it! My sister was aggravated because whatever Zoey calls soda, pop maybe? in the book, she says that in Oklahoma or wherever the HON is located they don't call it that there. Also, their little group will sit there and argue for an hour over dumb little stuff when there's an emergency world saving thing they're supposed to be doing. Ugh. I don't know. I can't stop reading them, but they do drive me nuts!

I totally agree, those books have a weird thing. I really hate zoey, she's a total b****, and they're total trash, but I can't seem to stop!!! I always read them in two days, and sleep around 3 hours that night because I'm addicted to them, but still, i don't like them!! They do make me nervous, they're soooo stressing!!! It's like, one minute she's crazy over Erik, the next over Heath, or Loren, or Stark, or Kalona, or any male that comes across her path!! Like, seriously, the only safe ones are Damien and Jack because they're gay!! But anyway, I'm addicted!!!

I read a few of those. I remember the first book pretty good and then it just going downhill from there. It got to the point to where I wouldn't read any more of them. They're horrible books. Zoey makes terrible decisions every other minute which makes her unbearable. Her friends are just irritating. The boys are.. I don't know... Really it's not worth even picking them up.

I have exactly the same thing. Even though I get agitated when I'm reading them, I can't seem to put them down. But as was said, the language is ridiculous; who uses the word bullpoopie, come on! All the characters are extremely stereotyped and get very annoying. The only ones I seem to like are some of the guys (Heath, Erik), her gay friends and the twins and Aphrodite. Even though Aphrodite must be the most stereotype she is funny.

Some books barely have a story line, thank god because they seem to get weaker by each book, and Zoey only seems to walk from one guys arms in to anothers. It's terribly frustrating!

I've read, and bought, them until Burned and kept myself from buying Awakened. Burned was the final drop.

Did anyone have the same problem with The Vampire Diaries? The first 4 books are kind of okay, but after that...

Loesjem, I completely agree with you on The Vampire Diaries. Which book was it that Elana **SPOILER ALERT** comes back from the dead? I think that's the point where the series started to go downhill. But I LOVE the TV series, no matter how weird it gets!

I feel like the story's being dragged out. I keep waiting for them to defeat Neferet and move to the next obsticle but it's the same enemy over and over. It's like watching the same battle scene for hours where the hero's getting the crap beat out of them with nothing won on their side. Or at least people should start believing her and not have her be all ostricized. It's depressing. The same thign happened in the Evermore series. I mean, I think that series was shit but I read the first couple books hoping something would surface that wasnt depressing. I think the book Burned did it in for me. I feel like it's all been downhill from the beginning of Hunted.

I don't the House of Night series is that bad. It's puts a different spin on vampires, but at the same time keeps them traditional by only coming out at night, instead of sparkling in the sunlight.

I loved these books, and can't wait for the next one :)

I didn't get very far in the first book. To much swearing for my taste. I liked Twilight though.

i have read all the house of night books and am quite stuck with them yes there are parts that really annoy me and bits i cant help but shout out about but all in all i like them the first one shocked me and from then on i have been pleasantly surprised in both good and bad ways with them, every time i think i know whats coming the plot goes the opposite way, i think maybe im just stuck in a rut reading these as im the kinda person who cant stop reading them till the series has ended no matter what there like.im always changing my mind it drives me nuts. the new one revealed was a huge disappointment and really pissed me off. but no doubt i will end up reading the next one. why did they have to drag this series out its driving me nuts. the twilight books were definately so much more enjoyable to read and so much better written.

I know what you mean. My mother actually got me to read them (she's really into that young teen vamp style books). I read the first chapter and said, "What the heck is this garbage, how horrid." But I finished the book due to I can't start one and not finish it. I thought the whole thing was horrible trash, yet I couldn't stop picking up the next!! It's ridiculous! Haha
The whole series is very dumped down. I sometimes think I can seriously feel my brain cells depleting. That being said it does have some interesting concepts, such as the elaborate unique marks, trackers, etc. I also like how they brought the sense of magic into it with affinities. It is just very predictable and ridiculous. I feel the concept was decent, just should have been executed on an entirely different level. You can really tell what parts were written by mother and daughter. Some parts are so advanced and descriptive, then others you feel as if you are in a teenage girls mind who has no worries(like the impending death of her friends) except if her shoes math her boyfriends shirt.

Loesjem & djalisha, I agree with you both about TVD. I read a few of the books (after having started with the show) and tried to get into them but couldn't really do it. They got really weird in a bad way. The show on the other hand -- I love every crazy new thing they introduce and will watch it until its end.

I wish they would just stop and finish the series because i just want to finish them. I'm really not much of a fan of it but i dont like not finishing a story when i have already started. I would like to know the big revelation of the end( if there is one) because I bought the series and when i realized that they would just keep on writing more...i just stopped buying them and since the library has the books i just read them from there.
