I am looking for some current recommendations of popular literature...

We lived in England (Surrey) from August 2007 to December 2009. While there I fell in love with visiting British bookstores; if my brother visited me from the states and we went to bookstores together it was trouble!

I miss popping into the shops to see what the latest great popular books are. It was interesting to find the difference in release dates from the US to the UK.

Just jumping in blind I have three suggestions;

White Teeth - an everyday story of modern Britain.

Trainspotting - jump in and enjoy the ride of learning how to speak and read Scottish accents.

Catch-22 - There is only one catch - that's Catch-22, and it is the best there is.

Or that should be touchstoned

I love Danny Wallace. I just got two new fictional selections by him. I like Dave Gorman. There are others. One of my favorites is Mil Millington's Love and Other Near Death Experiences.

I am currently reading I Am Tom Ditto. It's good.

I wish there were more Flavia de Luce books already.

David Mitchell is my current fiction enthusiasm. I've read 3 of his books and they have all been very different. He has the knack of being able to write convincingly in multiple voices, which is impressive when some authors struggle to write convincingly in one voice.

On a non-fiction note, I'd suggest Stuart Maconie, although I can imagine if you're not quite the right age the cultural references might pass you by and he'd be a lot less amusing than he is to me.

And, out of left field, Simon Armitage. He's a yorkshire poet, has written original poetry, translated early english poetry and written non-fiction as well.
