So I'm a yenta. So sue me.

But what prompted me, was that I never knew Tzvetan Todorov was married to Nancy Huston (and vice versa). Huh.

Married a long time, I mean.

Or that Pascal Rogé got married. And to what a cutie. AND she plays the piano too.

I only recently learned that biologist Lynn Margulis was astronomer Carl Sagan's first wife.

Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson.

Progeny too: Dorion Sagan.

Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt. (And before he and Hustvedt got together Auster and Lydia Davis were married.)

Okay, they wouldn't have been dating, but I wonder if a favorite poet of mine, Christopher Middleton, is any relation to this Kate person who's been so much in the news lately.

I was listening to both Emma Kirkby and Anthony Rooley separately for years before I knew that they were, in fact, once an Item.

Came across another one: Diane Ackerman and Paul West.

I'm blanking on Diane Ackerman.

Ackerman's a real all-arounder. She's a poet, but probably best known for her non- fiction: A Natural History of the Senses, Deep Play and many others. The most recent is a memoir of her life with West since he had a stroke which deprived him of language: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/apr/30/stroke-rehabilitation-love-st...

Oh, that senses book rings a bell. But how cruel. At least he recuperated the ability to write... Somehow or other I completely missed this, it's mainly the memory of the West-Coetzee clash I have in mind.

How come I'm always the last to learn this stuff? Because no one minds this thread, that's why. Neocon historian Niall Ferguson left the ol' wife and children for Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

@ 13 - Did he? He never told me that.

har!

He has a nose like a boiled turnip.

16soniaandree

I never thought about it, because it is not the nose you notice first in a Scot - it's the bl**dy local accent!

Apologies for linking to The Daily Mail, but this is a juicy round-up:

Clearly, I don't keep up on neocons like I should-I'd actually never heard of Niall Ferguson. After having read about him, I mourn my former ignorance. Sounds like he and Hirsi deserve one another though. I hope they have many years ahead in which to make each other thoroughly miserable.

21soniaandree
juny 8, 2011, 6:08 am

The picture is not very flattering for Niall, his nose is not so big in real life.

What annoys me the most about Ferguson is that you never hear any feedback when his bestselling tomes turn out to be filled with bullshit predictions and prescriptions (see Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power; see Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire). He just pops out another bullshit tome.

I'm beginning to think you really were an item... :) No harm in slagging people's exes, I hope!

Well, it's not a "who's dating whom" thing - maybe a "who's sending photos of their crotch to whom" thing, but I just can't get over this Weiner dog thing here in the U.S.

This Weiner weasel is for all intents and purposes still a newlywed, and his bride is, in my humble estimation, a beauty. Truly this scrawny mutt ought to be thanking the fates for his good fortune. So why, dear God, does he have the idiotic compulsion to introduce his own little member of the house to young women over the cellular waves?

All politicians are just hounddogs with bad hair.

@ Lola - Haha! No, I used to be his secretary @ his Oxford College...He had another secretary working for him at Harvard. He tried to ask me if I had read his 'Empire' book, but, as an inveterate French leftie, I was nice enough to say that I had too much to read already.

Did I scare everyone? :-)

26AsYouKnow_Bob

Well, that's an impressive example of the "small world" problem; I think it's more that we're impressed, rather than frightened.

27soniaandree
juny 11, 2011, 2:08 pm

Well, there were also 50 other Fellows to deal with, so he wasn't my priority, because he was at Harvard most of the time. Other Fellows were truly fascinating, including one who used to be friend with C. S. Lewis (the oldies were the sweetest most respectful and respected people I have known there: I miss them terribly).

That's pretty funny, Lola, in a classic sorta way.

OT but y'know, I just caught Oh Brother, Where Art Thou on the tube last night. Tiresias as an old black guy, those delectable sirens, Polyhemus, lotus eaters (ie, Evert doesn't repent his sins) the KKK robes (instead of sheep)...

I guffawed like John Goodman.
