It has occurred to me that I would like to be able to create some kind of general tag, as seen in card catalogs, which does not get attached to a specific book. In the past on LT, I have placed a few in the tags of specific books, but that is not a good way to do it. I am speaking of things like this:

Persian cookery; see also Iranian cookery (or vice versa)

insert pseudonym see insert real name

insert old company name see also insert new company name

Is this question now as clear as mud? Is there some legitimate and logical way to do this?

In Library-talk these are called cross-references and, as far as I know, there is no way to do them within your individual catalog.

You can't tag works that aren't in your catalogue.

But maybe I'm misunderstanding what you want to do.

You've tagged a cookbook Persian cookery. But you don't refer to it often, and forget. Hence you search for Iranian cookery, and don't find it. You'd like to set some references that Iranian would alway pull in Persian too?

If so, your only way would be to think of all the crossreferences, then from the tag page edit 'Iranian Cookery' to the tag 'Persia Iran Iranian Persian arabic arabia food cookbook cookery' and hope you've thought of all the instances

Other option would be to create lots of subgenre tags, cooking, persia, iran, etc and then search for Cooking AND iran

Maybe create a Cookery collection, and then subsearch within it to get a small enough number of titles to brouse through.

There is no (or a very large) limit to how long a tag can be

Just tag the book "Persian cookery" and "Iranian cookery."

From your tag page, you can edit "Persian cookery" to "Persian cookery, Iranian cookery" and presto! all Persian cookery books now have an additional, separate Iranian cookery tag, too. You will not have actually changed the Persian tag, merely added the Iranian tag to all books that currently had the Persian tag. Do the reverse to your Iranian books and you are covered.

If you want something sitewide, that's another story. However, seeing both tags on your books should at least remind you to search for both.
