August 28 - Kit needs a nudge

Hello, book-nudgers! I feel the need to introduce myself, since I've only joined recently. I'm Kit, a 20-something, compulsively reading Australian. I recently discovered this group and thought it may be of great assistance in helping me put a dent in my ridiculous TBR pile. (The 'To read' list on LT is only a portion of the total pile - more specifically, the books I can actually see). So, I'm going to put 5 books down and whichever has the most votes by the time I finish my current read will be next started. Thanks for your help in advance! Kit.

Jonathan Strange was really good. My daughter is a big Agatha fan, and loved the Secret Notebooks.

I'm an Agatha Christie fan, but haven't read that bio by John Curran. It might be that I'm not a biography reader anyway, so... *blank*

Been wanting to read Liar for a while, but haven't been able to secure a copy. Can't tell if it's good, just that I'd love to read it.

BUT I absolutely loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's now one of my comfort re-reads. Definitely recommended, especially for bibliophiles! =)

I loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society but Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is very close to the top of my TBR list and I'm particularly excited about it!

The only one of those I've read is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I didn't expect to like it--thought it would be saccharine, but actually it wasn't, and I enjoyed it a lot. I'd agree that it's a comfort read.

Jonathan Strange and Guernsey Literary. Frankly, your life won't be complete until you've read both of these amazing books. I hope you get even half the enjoyment from them that I did.

Okay, well I cheated a bit - there were 5 votes for Jonathan Strange and 4 for Guernsey Literary, but I ended up going for Guernsey Literary because I've just read a fantasy book and I thought some realistic/historical fiction would be nice. Thanks!

The only reason for Strange to qualify as fantasy is the magic... and there is still an unresolved argument about was this magic at all or was it something else just being called magic - something that the people here can appreciate. I am in the second camp.

That's one of the reasons why a lot of the fantasy fans don't like the book by the way.

Not trying to change your mind - just mentioning it for the future :) Just approach it with open mind - not as a fantasy novel or you might be disappointed.... and read the under line notes - they make a really fascinating story on their own, tangled into the novel itself. :)
