My Spanish lit teacher is a descendant of Milton. I bet he uses that as a pick-up line.

It has been over 30 years since I read Paradise Lost. Long ago, in Protestant circles at least, this work along with Pilgrim's Progress were almost de-facto parts of the canon.

KennyG: What would you like to discuss?

I would like to know about some of the precursor literature that illustrates the development of the fall of Satan material.

"Paradise Lost" was very powerful. I am not the most religious person in the world, but I found the subject matter intensely interesting. The poetic beauty of Milton words captivated me throughout the course of the work. Sadly, I tried "Paradise Regained" but I did not get far into the read before I became disinterested. I guess we are fascinated more by evil than goodness. Sad. I may retry "Paradise Regained" but I fail to see how it can be as moving as "Paradise Lost."

Paradise Regained consists of Satan tempting Jesus in the desert and Jesus bitch-slapping him around. It’s pretty amusing, actually.

I listened to Paradise Lost as an audiobook and it was very good.

This past Nov.-Dec. I read through Milton's work in conjunction with listening to lectures from Yale's Open Courses (I think that's the name of it--should be easy to find with those search words.), and I highly recommend it. The lecturer, John Rodgers, is an engaging and learned teacher. Great resource.
