VOTE: What do you think of "Twilight?"

Just thought I'd try out voting again and gauge everyone's opinion about the popular sparkly vampire series (by the way, I have a question for the Twi-hards who went to see Breaking Dawn, Part I - did Edward sparkle while he and Bella went on vacation?).

Can we also vote on whether we like Kristen stewart or not??

i recently watched like 10 mins. of twilight and had to stop because of kristen's acting.
but i think she is A LOT better in breaking dawn. it was def. the best movie so far.
and i dont think edward was ever outside in the sunlight. but not positive.

#2 I absolutely, positively HATE HATE HATE Kristen Stewart. She is whiny, boring, and just plain annoying. I feel like she took the character "Bella" and chewed it up and spit it out. Bella is nothing like the way KS portrays her.

That being said, I need to say something to all those Twilight haters out there who go around complaining about it and saying "Vampires don't sparkle":

It's called creativity! Look it up! No one is forcing you to read the books. Instead of spending all your time telling everyone why you hate Twilight so much, maybe you should spend your time looking for something you actually like.

Sorry 'bout that rant. I have had it on my chest for a long time. Needed to get it out.

#15 - What are the reasons that you like the series so much? Is it the quality of writing, character development, plot, pacing, dialogue, meaningful characters that you can identify with... I'm curious. I am not fond of Twilight, but I've wondered what draws women to the story and I'm interested in what you have to say.

I'm drawn to the 'drama' aspect. I have a lot of drama in my life (from other people) and I like to sit down and read about someone whose problems are worse than mine. It makes me feel like my problems aren't that big. I mean, I can't remember the last time I was torn between a raging Werewolf, and an aloof vampire.

Ok, I get why people don't like Twilight. But I have to say, from someone who never ever reads romance novels, this was addicting like I would imagine a romance novel is.

I liked Stephenie Meyer's other book, The Host better. Of course, that may be because it's aimed more toward adults.

Yeah, I can get that. That's what I love about books - you can escape into someone else's life and just forget about your own world. I can see how Twilight can do that.

As much as I don't like Twilight, there is one thing I respect about Stephanie Meyer - she wrote Twilight purely for her own entertainment. She wasn't expecting it to be a big sensation and wasn't saying to herself, 'vampires are going to be the next thing,' she just wrote something she enjoyed. I think that this enjoyment was what connected her to her readers.

It's interesting how the most successful writers are the ones who don't try to become novelists - I'm thinking J.K. Rowling, Meyer, Christopher Paolini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle... the list goes on.

I like that, too. Stephenie Meyer didn't really care about becoming famous, or having fans. She seems really down to earth, just like JK and the rest of them.

Apparently the birth scene is giving quite a few people seizures, because of the strobe light effect.

The birth scene wasn't as bloody as the books. It's too bad, cause I like gore.

It's not so "euh" when you think of it form his prospective: there is this 'monster' inside the love if his life surrounded by material so hard that only his teeth can cut through it. If he doesn't get the 'monster' out right away, Bella is going to be ripped apart from the inside-out.

When i was at the theater to see the movie there were little girls in the row with my and when that scene came on the mom said "bathroom break" to the little girls. i laughed

I voted 'No'. She was too whiny, unsure, a little slutty. She just didn't 'get' the character at all.

Magelet87, I agree with your statement completely! Kristen doesn't understand Bella at all, it seems. Bella may not have been very useful (at first, anyway) but she tried her hardest. Kristen potrayed her as this annoying damsel in distress that only knows how to complain.

My college is filled with the extremes of Twilight lovers and haters. But those who love it love it because of the hot guys and not the story. The ones who hate it, hate it because they associate Twilight with squealing fan girls. I personally liked Twilight as it was a different take on vampire lore. I also like The Host more. The main character is still a goody-two-shoes but it felt more realistic to me :D

I agree with you, Tavaresden. I liked the Host way way more than I like Twilight, and I like Twilight a lot!

i think we should be asked two different questions: do you like twilight movie? and do you like twilight books?

Me too! I would love to read more about Wanda and Melanie. One of the main reasons I think Twilight is alright, not great, is because of the crazed fans. I mean, the Twilight fans can get pretty intense, with 'Team Jacob' and 'Team Edward'. If I had to choose, I would choose Jacob, but I don't know how I feel after reading Midnight Sun. I liked that a lot better than from Bella's POV. There is something about a tortured vampire that gets to me. I used to dislike Edward a whole lot, but now I understand why he seems so aloof. I like him a lot more now. I hope she finishes writing Midnight Sun. I would love to read the other books from his POV, too.

Yeah, I think Meyer would do a lot better writing from Edward's perspective, because I thought Bella was pretty pathetic. It seemed like Stephenie Meyer had a lot more enthusiasm for the two dudes than she did for her main protagonist.

You're right. She almost never talked about Bella. In interviews she was always talking about Edward or Jacob.

I thought he was much handsomer in Harry Potter, before he became hugely famous and decided anorexia isn't just for women. What is it about fame that makes people think skeletons are the next big thing in fashion?

What I liked about the Saga: Meyer's vision of vampire 'powers' and how they work. I particularly like how Alice's ability to read the future is predicated on people making decisions. I also liked each vampire's 'back story' (their human lives, how they turned, etc) more than the actual Saga plots.

However, the abusive/codependent aspects of Bella & Edward's relationship pretty much soured the books for me. As for the movie, I only saw the first one, didn't like it.

in my opinion he wasnt as cute in twilight because the white makeup and the fact that he was trying to look like a vampire that wanted to 'eat' people. that awkwardness is not going to be as hot as tough, sweaty, man fighting for his life. (i guess he wasnt fighting for his life in HP..but you get my point)

i never found him cute with his shirt off but anorexia never came to mind. definitely a bit scrawny though. haha

The abuse is pretty much only in the third book (with the exception of Edward's desire to hold Bella down and forcibly abort their child in the fourth book): when Edward pins Bella to the bed to prevent her from leaving, when he sabotages her car, when he gets his family to hold her hostage.

These are all things abusers do to control their victims, and before anyone replies with, "But Edward was only trying to protect her!" let me tell you that when my friend's boyfriend and her family did these things to her, they were trying to protect her, too. Quite often abusers think what they're doing is in the best interest of the victim; that doesn't make it ok.

Holy crap, is that what happened in the third book? Geez, they don't mention that in the Wikipedia summary.

Oh, and I heard that Bella broke her hand while punching Jacob in the third book - can she get anymore wussy than that? I am not experienced in any of the martial arts and I've never taken fighting lessons, but I do not break my hand when I punch things or people. Does Stephenie Meyer believe women are so weak that when we punch things or fight, we are weaklings and will hurt ourselves? Sure, we're not as strong (physically) as guys, but dammit, we do not break our hands when we punch things!

She cracked a bone in her hand after punching Jacob in the jaw, which is not unthinkable. There's an old saying that you should never hit someone's face with a closed fist, because you'll hurt yourself as much as (if not more than) the other person.

But why did Edward hold Bella down, and why did her family keep her hostage? And how is that supposed to be okay?

He believed werewolves were too dangerous for Bella to be around, so one night when she decided she was going to visit Jacob anyway (while Edward was visiting her), he held her down on her bed until she agreed not to go. Another night (when Bella thought Edward wasn't around) she decided to drive to the reservation only to get to her truck and discover Edward had removed something so it wouldn't run. And it was Edward's family, not Bella's, that held her hostage. Edward arranged for his family to keep Bella at their house on weekends when Edward was away hunting, so she would always been under someone's eye. This was all justified by the belief that werewolves are too unstable for people to be around.

That is pretty sick. Isn't true love supposed to be built on mutual trust, no secrets, free will, and respect for the other person? And that was really nasty of Bella, yanking Jacob around like that - kissing him, and then telling him you're just not that into him. That would be cruel if I did that to a guy.

I was pretty pissed of at Bella and Edward both by the end of the third book. I hated how Edward got all controlling and possessive. I dated someone like that once and it was horrible. I still have nightmares about the way he would scare me into not wanting to see my friends or family. So, no, I didn't have much sympathy towards Edward's suffering in the fourth book. I hated how Bella treated Jacob. Kind of like a stand-in boyfriend, only good enough for her when Edward wasn't around. I also hated how Bella was ready to die to save her love. I mean, some people look at that as romantic, but my brother committed suicide, so I don't feel for people who consider the same. I just don't see the romance in killing yourself for someone like that. It's selfish.

I absolutely LOVED the book Twilight! Went and bought the movie and was very, very disappointed! The characters were awfully portrayed by actors *cough cough* Kristen stewart! Plus they left out nessacary details and parts of the book. Then, they added parts I didn't remember reading. Also, I was very disappointed with Edwards sparkling..I excepted so much more than a little glimmer! Welp, that's my opinion!

No! I am still reading New Moon! I ABSOLUTELY HATE how Bella is getting close with Jacob! She belongs with Edward!! I cried when Edward left Bella :(. But I know they will get back together! I am having a very hard time reading this one...hopefully it will get better!

New moon was probably the hardest to get through for me. However I did enjoy eclipse and breaking dawn.

I have heard that Breaking Dawn was absolutely the best! Twilight is also one I heard.

I think the best part of the Twilight series was the end.

That would be the end of Breaking Dawn...If your going to dislike it then learn a little bit more about it..

On the contrary, I know quite a bit, which is why I've read and researched the Twilight series before I've come to any conclusions. If you like it that's fine, but I prefer The Scorpio Races, Jane Eyre and The Phantom of the Opera when it comes to my romances. Have you read The Scorpio Races? It's a really wonderfully written book.

It's about capaill uische, which in Celtic mythology, are these horses that come out of the ocean and drown people, especially children and young women. In this novel, there is a small island in Ireland that races these horses every year, and they're called the Scorpio Races. Mariah - Not necessarily. The Harry Potter fans are as maniac as ever (I should know, being one of them!), and you should have seen all the nerd explosions that were happening across the internet when the trailer for The Hobbit was released. It's been over 70 years since The Hobbit was published, and about ten since The Lord of the Rings movies came out, but the fan following is strong and devoted. We will never go away.

#100 I really hope KS is good in Snow White I don't know if Snow White is going to have to portray a lot of emotion, but if she does we might have to see more than the one face Kristen Stewart uses for acting. Is it just me or is she really 1 dimensional??

I've actually looked at some of Kristen Stewart's acting in other movies (particularly "The Runaways") and she wasn't too bad. Nothing incredible, but not bad. I think she might have a bit more fun with "Snow White and the Huntsman," and hopefully that will come out in her acting.

Anyway, it wasn't like Bella was a fully developed, 3D character in the first place. Not enough material for an actress to work with.

That's a good question. I would say no. He seems pretty stubborn to me.

Personally, I haven't read the books. I read a couple pages of the first one once and put it back on the shelf. I have several good friends who loved them for the brain candy they are, but I've been put off by the number of girls who've taken it altogether too seriously. I loved the Sweet Valley books (mega brain candy, there!) and was a major fan up until my teen years (at which point I gave myself completely over to Star Wars and Stargate (with loads of fantasy books) for the next decade), but I definitely wouldn't use either of the Wakefield twin's experiences to gauge the success of my relationships.

Fun related memory: When I was 14, my brother and I were charged with entertaining a couple of little girls while the adults visited. My room was the logical play area, so I pulled out a few age-appropriate books and games, and my brother brought a few toys over from his room. One of the little girls looked around at the posters on my wall, and asked, "Is this your brother's room?" XD

Twilight is sort of boring in the beginning I'll agree with you.

^108, I think you and I have a lot in common! When I was in fifth grade, I wanted to hang out with the boys drawing tie fighters and Death Stars.... I read the Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica novels over and over. In my teens I became an overall science fiction fan, and in my 20s finally discovered Star Trek. In my 30s I finally added fantasy fiction to my interests. And my husband and I are working are way through Stargate SG-1 now.

#109 - I just smiled and told her that it was my room. I hope that this experience corrupted her to some small, positive degree.

#110 - I founded a science fiction organization at my university based on an interest in SG-1. Some buddies and I got together for weekly movie nights, then one night, I brought the 1994 Stargate movie. From then on, a few of us met on a weekly basis to watch one disk of SG-1. More and more people joined, and two years later, we finished the entire series, plus Atlantis. Sadly, I must say, SG-1 ends at season 8 in my book. Participants didn't want to give up the weekly sci-fi nights, so I founded the sci-fi org. We included fantasy, too, so the current members are considering a name change. Maybe borrow from Cyphan? ^_^

As for my husband, he learned of SG-1 around season 8, and I believe the first episode he ever saw was in season 9. I forget the title, but it was the one where Mitchell goes camping with General Landry. He learned that there was a better side to the series after joining the SG Nights. ^_^

^ #111 Rozax - I think we're only in Season 6 -- we had the disk go bad during the season finale! We finally bought a disk repair kit but then my husband started traveling for work again and we haven't got back to it!

We did skip ahead to watch one episode of Season 10, because my husband's brother is an actor in Vancouver and had a guest part in it. It was the episode "Bad Guys," and he plays the museum security guard who is a cross between John McClane of Die Hard and Barney Fife. We thought it was pretty funny, but of course we're a little biased!

#112 - Tragedy! One series I keep trying to get through is based on the Jeeves and Wooster books. They're funny, the arcing plots are entertaining, but I get so tired of the catalyst being, "Bertie! I'm in love! It's the real thing, this time!" Like many, I primarily watch it because Jeeves is so freakin' awesome. But so is Stephen Fry, so no surprise there.
