Hi folks

Let's have your nominations for the two books we'll read early next year. We'll use the same process as before:

1) You can nominate two books
2) You can second any number of books that are nominated by other people
3) All seconded books make it through to a vote
4) The two books with the most votes will be the next two reads.

I propose: The Golden Bowl by Henry James
Life A User's Manuel by Georges Pérec

I'll second Life: A User's Manual.

I'll nominate Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain.

I second Oliver Twist. BillieJean, I'm reading it in February, so even if it isn't chosen, you can join me in a buddy read if you want.

# Oops, sorry! It wasn't on the list of books on the group homepage. Thanks very much for the link.

I nominate The Awakening by Kate Chopin and Troubles by J. G. Farrell.

And I'll second Far from the Madding Crowd, which I've read before but would love to have an excuse to reread.

I've created a poll. This is my first time, so I hope it works!
I've added all the titles that were seconded at least once.
If you want any changes, let me know and I'll do my best to rectify!

I could not find the poll. Maybe it is my computer.

I got there, but the site wanted me to disable a bunch of my security stuff, so I didn't vote.

#15 if you choose the unsafe mode, you can access the poll directly. you're not exposing your computer, but you'll be able to access other categories of the Mister Poll site some of which can be offensive (they have a fetish category). I put the poll in the books, magazines and comics category.

So far Testament of Youth is winning!

I voted! Everything worked just fine. Thanks for setting this up, Cecilturtle.

Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain is a clear winner. We then have a tie for The Golden Bowl by James and Molloy by Beckett. Does anyone remember what we do when there's a tie? Another quick vote?

That works for me. Your the leader.

I found another more simple application (I hope) this is to break the tie between Molloy and The Golden Bowl
Take my poll!

I have bad grad school memories of both books, so I think I'll take a pass on this one.

Sorry, missed this thread for a while! Glad that Testament of Youth won, now I have no excuse not to read it. ;) Since I nominated it, shall I set up the threads?

Will pass on the others, I'm trying to not buy books this year and I don't own either of those.

There weren't many votes the second time around, but almost all of them went to The Golden Bowl by James - there's our second book. I can't wait; he's one of my favourite writers.
I've started Testament of Youth - beautifully written and engaging. It's divided into 3 parts which are all about 200 pages; that makes it a pretty easy division for our discussion, I think. Looking forward to your comments and impressions
