The New York Times website had an advertisement for the $9.95 Steinbeck set today. It's a phenomenal set at an unbelievable price. Literally, it's unbelievable. Years ago when I stumbled upon the LOA introductory offers page I immediately thought it was a scam: $5.95 for three Mark Twain books (over a 1,000 pages each), free shipping and no obligation whatsoever. To good to be true! (I remembered my local bookstore had Hemingway's slim In Our Time for $14.) With a false confidence of recognizing a "scam" I closed the page.

Years later, I discovered my university library was filled with LOA volumes; I checked some out for class and was instantly enamored. If I didn't go to my local library, I might not have ever read any LOA book (a truly dreadful thought!). Did anyone else here wonder if LOA was too good to be true upon viewing the introductory offers?

Yes! In May, 1983, it was Herman Melville's Typee, Omoo, Mardi.

I don't now recall how relatively / ridiculously inexpensive that first volume of my subscription was, but I can see now how nefarious the plan was. (We just received #221, and have never declined a volume that wasn't defective -- and only two of those in 29 years!)

Actually, to my mind, the "too good to be true" part always was that somebody would dream up LOA, then make it reality. Crazy Like a Fox. And I'm so glad they did!

$5.95 for three Mark Twain books

$5.95 for $110 worth of books = a 95% discount. Unbelievable indeed.

Like you, I discovered LoA through the library. They are gorgeous books. Makes you think about how we are being robbed blind by so many other publishers, doesn't it?
