A day and a half under our belts, so to speak.

A couple of upsets, men and women.

I'm surprised Berdych is out, 6th seed.

Any thoughts about how things might play out?

Stosur has lost her edge. She needs to turn in her wings... er rackets.

I am disappointed that I will miss Wimbledon this year. I'll dvr the finals. This is mitigated by the fact that I'll be on vacation in Italy, however...

Sorry, tennis fans.
If you had Nadal in the finals, you'll suffer heartbreak, since he fell in five sets last night...

No beats Superman. That guy donned the cape for one night...

Well, my bracket is messed up for sure now. I had Roger (my sentimental favorite) beating Nadal. Now Tsonga has a real chance to get to the final.

Nadal's defeat has blown open one half of the draw although the British press have already pencilled Murray into the final despite the fact he has the toughest draw. Before the tournament I thought Federer would win it but having watched him against Benneteau, where he could easily have lost, I just can't see him beating Djokovic over five sets.

The best story in tennis just now must be Brian Baker. After almost six years out and five surgeries he is making a real impact and has a real chance of making the 4th round.

I love the Baker story! What a fairy tale!

How about Shvedova winning a "golden set"! Also surprising was that she held the previous record (on the women's side) of (the first) 23 points in a set.

Imagine the Wimbledon officials allowing One More Game past the 11 p.m. curfew so that Andy Murray could beat Marcos Baghdadis. It was adequate tennis, however; nothing more.

(a quiet Yay Roger)

>10 karenmarie: - imagine having an 11pm curfew. Wimbledon officials were desperate for that match to finish due to the problems it could have created with the draw. I agree about the standard of tennis though - Federer or Djokovic would have dismissed Baghdatis in 3 sets.

Looking at the men's draw all the decent matches are on one side of the draw - Murray-Cilic, Ferrer-Del Potro, & Tsonga-Fish. The Baker story could run futher - he has a real chance against Kohlschreiber.
Saw a little of Roddick-Ferrer yesterday - from his departure it looked like Roddick's last match in the tournament.

The women's draw still looks open. I would say there is a lot of scope for shocks but considering the last couple of years is any result in the women's game a shock?

>9 Harry_Vincent: - it is amazing it hasn't happened before given the rash of one-sided matches over the years. What is incredible is that Shvedova did it against a decent player - the runner-up of the recent French Open.

Wimbledon puzzle me - why is the non-match Federer-Malisse on Centre Court and yet Murray-Cilic isn't? Every other country puts their best player on their main court for the big matches yet Wimbledon decides not to. Considering the other match on Court 1 looks the best match of the round (Ferrer v Del Potro) you do wonder if the scheduling committee actually watch tennis. The fact that the rains are coming means means that the tournament may start to grind to a halt. (The next three days are supposedly light rain interspersed with heavy rain).

Men's QF day -

Federer v Youzhny - looks a training match for Federer, bad back or not.

Djokovic v Mayer - another easy match for the top seed.

Murray v Ferrer - 50/50 match, on form Ferrer is probably the favourite, looked very impressive wacking Del Potro.

Tsonga - Kohlschreiber - Tsonga will probably will this but it could be a lot tougher than expected.

As for the women - it looks like the winner of Williams-Azarenka will take the title, and that looks like Williams.

I would really like to see Federer win here. He needs to get the monkey of his back and know he can beat Djokovic. It really is a shame they are on the same side of the draw.

15Jargoneer

14 - Only if you are not British. The dream of a first GS champion since the fall of the Roman Empire has the British media in thrall. Having watched both Djokovic and Federer this year I think the aforementioned monkey has more chance of beating Djokovic than Federer - the gap between them really does look massive now.

jul. 4, 2012, 10:38 am

What is amazing about the men's QFs is that Djokovic is the youngest player at 25, three of the eight are over 30. It begs the question about where are the upcoming players?

17karenmarie
jul. 4, 2012, 11:13 am

Watching Murray Ferrer right now and it's a pretty good match.

Both Roger and Djokovic had easy matches.

Personally, if I can't have Roger win it, which is what I want, then I'd like for Murray to win it.

The women don't particulary interest me, sad to say, but I'd bet on Serena to beat Azarenka.

I know the US has had a barren time in the last decade (as far as the men go) but it's still probably hard to realise how much a home win at Wimbledon would mean to the UK. If it were to happen I fully expect the Queen to step aside to allow the Wimbledon champion to ascend to the throne.

I must admit that it would be exciting to watch the frenzy that would occur if Andy won.

It is a very exciting match. 4th set, on serve.

Williams set a record of 24 aces in her SF yesterday. It was like a flashback to the old days (in men's tennis at least) when games lasted 1 minute and 5 setters lasted under 3 hours and everyone complained that there was no rallies.
There are times nowadays when the decision to watch to men's match requires almost as much commitment as a marriage.

21gilroy

So what's the over/under on the Radwanska - Williams match? Does the Pole have a chance?

I'd prefer to see more finesse than these baseline bruisers, but since Serena and Venus came into the game, the finesse seems to have left the women's game.

I'm wondering if it could fall to Murray vs Fedcup...

WOW! I just watch Roger and Djokovic play their semi-finals. It had all the drama and good play of a finals, but it wasn't. I definitely want Roger to go all the way!

I was so excited that Roger won. He looked really good.

I want Roger to go all the way too, although if Andy Murray wins, I know there will be a frenzy in the U.K. and that would be awesome to see.

24gilroy
jul. 7, 2012, 11:05 am

I think some news program pointed out that in the head to head of Fedcup vs Djoker, neither had more than two wins in a row at a slam. So I guess I kinda expected that win.

McEnroe was of the opinion that Djokovic just got out of bed on the wrong side on Friday. Federer did play well, especially serving, but I think he was helped by Djokovic being slightly off his game.

Federer is red hot favourite for the title (2-1 on with British bookies). Basically it boils down to whether he can blast Murray off the court - if Murray can drag him into a tennis match then he has a chance.

Watched some of the women's final - first set was a joke but then got interesting for a set and a bit. Still can't believe they get the same prize money as the men.

26karenmarie
jul. 7, 2012, 2:43 pm

Djoker said something about not feeling well but that he didn't want to talk about it. He definitely looked off. And Roger looked on.

We watched the Women's Final starting at 5-1. Aggie did great in the second set but Serena got her groove back in the 3rd.

I'm looking forward to watching the Men's Final tomorrow.

I don't think the women deserve the same money as the men either. If they played 5 sets, then sure. You can't whine about equality if you don't put forth the same effort and if you whine about women being less strong physically you're arguing against yourself the other way.

It was an amazing statistic, though, that Serena ended up with 102 (103? definitely over 100) aces.

Andy will win, just not today. Roger was amazing!

28karenmarie

Yup, Roger was amazing. I'm happy for him. I loved seeing his daughters, too.

29Jargoneer

Federer was there for the taking in the first two sets but Murray didn't take his chances in the second. Once that set went to Federer and the roof was closed the writing was on the wall.

>26 karenmarie: - Williams serve was amazing and yet there was a brief moment at the beginning of the third set where I thought Radwanska really could win but Williams closed the door.

30karenmarie
jul. 8, 2012, 2:27 pm

Yes, Jargoneer. Serena was somewhat out of it at the beginning of the third and Aggie could have taken it. She didn't up her game and Serena did.

Andy came out with amazing energy and an aggressive game plan. I was really wondering how things were going to go. But once Roger took the second and the roof was closed, I agree that the writing was on the wall. Even then Andy had chances. Those falls and that lunge didn't help either, I think.

It's strange to think that everyone will be at Wimbledon in 3 weeks time for the Olympics.

I don't know if you can listen to this outside of the UK but if you can it's worth a listen - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01kjjp1/Desert_Island_Discs_Martina_Navrat...

>31 Jargoneer: that's part of why I'm not so keen on tennis as an Olympic sport. There already are enough signature events in the sport. The Olympics just seems like an artificial afterthought. Not so interested.
