Sometimes I just need to let my brain go into park and enjoy a romance, however I prefer Fantasy romances and am very happy with a lot of Harlequin's Luna titles.

Hi! I agree completely about letting the brain go into park. :) I note we've quite a few of those sorts of books in common. Now, to pull all of my books out of storage & list them all!

I still like both 'straight' romance and SF but I really like romance with a little extra and a touch of fantasy or paranormal can be just the thing I'm looking for.

4wyvernfriend
jul. 25, 2006, 10:21 am

that's exactly it. I occasionally read romances (and I do) they sometimes feel like they're missing something.

Nora Roberts occasionally has a bit of paranormal in hers. Which I honestly like. Then again I'm a huge fan of hers.

Anyone else read the Liaden series (Local Custom, I Dare, etc.)by Sharon Lee and Robert Miller? I like those. Love Georgette Heyer - to me Regency England might as well be a fantasy world :).

I like the Liaden series but I have to admit that my favorite books (that I've read so far) are the later books; I really liked Balance of Trade and Crystal Soldier. Agent of Change didn't work for me. It seemed like a more-or-less standard road romance.

Has anyone read anything by Linnea Sinclair yet? Finders, Keepers reminded me a bit of the Liaden books.

Finders, keepers is on Mount TBR

Anyone else read The Fairy Godmother and One Good Knight by Mercedes Lackey? I hope there are more stories set in this world.

Regency England is another world and Heyer is very good at setting us down in the middle of it.

I've read the Fairy Godmother and really liked it. One Good Knight is on my wishlist and I really would like to get it.

I've just finished Enchanted Inc by Shanna Swendson. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm waiting for the sequel Once Upon Stilettos to arrive so I can devour that one as well!

Has anyone read Once Upon Stilettos? Is it as good as the first one?

Has anyone else read A Kiss of Fate and Stolen Magic by Mary Jo Putney? What did you think? If the reviews on Amazon mean anything, people either really love them or are really disappointed by these books. I enjoyed them myself and hope there are more books about the Guardians.

hailielib-- I haven't yet read A Kiss of Fate or Stolen Magic, although I do think it's interesting that they're billing her as "M.J. Putney" versus "Mary Jo Putney", as if they want to distance her from her historical readers. That said, I do love her work, and I'm excited to read them when I get the time and money.

15shadrach_anki
ag. 11, 2006, 5:35 pm

Once Upon Stilettos is every bit as good as Enchanted, Inc. I ran out and bought it as soon as it came out and had it read within two or three days after purchasing. The only reason it took me so long was the fact that I had to go to work *sigh* and I had to reread Enchanted, Inc first!

One Good Knight is somewhere on my list of books to add to Mount TBR (which already takes up pretty much all the shelf space in my room). I enjoyed Fairy Godmother, and my mom has read both of them, but I've fallen a bit behind.

Let us know what you think. I suspect that her series are a little better read in order. At least in the 'Heart' series main characters in each book tend to appear in the other books as well, especially in the later ones, although they make a cameo appearance in the one preceeding their own story.

I don't read a lot of romance, but I like one by Mary Janice Davidson about the Queen of the Vampires. It is set in the modern day, and a woman who was bit by a vampire dies in a hit and run. She rises and somehow is the most powerful vampire around. She is more interested in shoe shopping than vampire traditions and it drives the vamps wild. She is like a smart valley girl with a heart. There is a romance thread, and the stories are very funny. There are 4 books in PB, one in HC, and a collection in TP. The first book is unDead and Unwed.

21wyvernfriend

that series isn't bad but I'm happy enough to borrow them from the library 8)

22Jenson_AKA_DL

I liked Undead and Unwed but I prefer Katie MacAlister's vamp/humor novels. I've read Sex and the Single Vampire and Sex, Lies and Vampires by her so far and I really liked them.

Right now I'm reading the new Black Dagger Brotherhood novel, Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward. They are more like a cross between Sherrilyn Kenyon and Christine Feehan, but the vamps aren't quite as overbearing as some of Feehan's characters.

23Storeetllr
oct. 16, 2006, 7:06 pm

I like both the Undead series and Katie MacAlister's vamp novels, as well as the Black Brotherhood novels. I'm reading my first Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark Hunter novel and enjoying it a lot (stayed up reading until after midnight and couldn't get up at my usual 5:30 a.m. time, and now I can barely keep my eyelids up). :)

Having said that, though, like Wyvern, I borrow most if not all my books from the library these days. I'm planning to move soon, and I have too many books as it is. I'm trying to get rid of most of them (giving some away on BookCrossings, giving some to the library for their book sales, giving some to friends) but can't seem to decide which ones to give away because I love them all and want to read them again!

Dark Side of the Moon was actually my least favorite dark hunter book, but I still liked it. I can remember what happened to Nick because he has been one of my favorite characters throughout the series, but recall nothing about the main characters. Maybe I got spoiled by all the books that came before.

Did you enjoy the story?

My favorite books combine speculative fiction and romance. Some of my favorite authors include Lois McMaster Bujold, Catherine Asaro, Sharon Shinn, Karen Traviss, Joan D. Vinge, Mercedes Lackey, Jane S. Fancher, Sharon Lee & Stever Miller, Robin McKinley, Julie E. Czerneda, Lyda Morehouse (aka Tate Hallaway, although I haven't read her vampire chicklit/romance book written as Hallaway yet), and even a few male authors who have good romantic sub-plots: Dean Koontz and Clive Barker.

I've actually been pretty disappointed with the Luna books but I liked The Dawn Star by Asaro, the two by Christie Golden, the first two by Caitlin Brennan, and I'm reading The Fairy Godmother now and I love it so much that I bought One Good Knight tonight. The first books by P. C. Cast and Laura Anne Gilman were okay and I plan to continue with those series.

So far I've read about 1/4 of the books on the Luna List (I did a List of Bests here: http://www.listsofbests.com/list/12116) I liked Urban Shaman and Thunderbird Falls by C E Murphy, I also liked Charmed Sphere, Compass Rose and Winter Moon
In Camelot's Shadow, Silver's Edge and For Camelot's Honor weren't bad
The Wizard's Ward and Gossamyr were readable but not great
I have a few piled up on my TBR pile. Harlequin cancelled the series though 8(

Hey Wyvern- I listened to Urban Shaman last summer and thought it was a bit unusual. I've been meaning to pick up Compass Rose too since I've heard so much about it.

37Quaisior

wyvernfriend, did you mean that Harlequin canceled some of the Luna series or the imprint altogether? From everything I've heard, only a few series were dropped and there are still Luna books coming out throughout this year at least. And good new for fans of Gail Dayton's first two Lunas: even though Luna canceled her series, Wildside Press' new paranormal/fantasy imprint Juno will be publishing the third book in the summer. I still haven't read that series, but I have both books on my TBR pile.

I think the sequel to Moon Called is coming out at the end of this month. I'm looking forward to it :-) I'll probably order it from Amazon and add it to my tbr pile.

I'm also planning to read more of Patricia Briggs' works in the future.

39wyvernfriend
gen. 16, 2007, 12:28 pm

#37 According to what I've read on some author blogs they're publishing a few they had contracts for and then stopping. They're apparently just stopping the series. It's not selling the way they hoped and several people have suggested reasons.

They're not all standard romances.
Hardback to trade to standard paperback instead of maybe trade to standard paperback or even just standard paperback
Not enough promotion
Not promoting the series to standard fantasy readers as well as romance readers.
Not selling the series as a fantasy series to bookstores that didn't really stock romances.

40Quaisior
gen. 16, 2007, 2:12 pm

I heard that all of their urban fantasies sold really well, especially C. E. Murphy's, so they were going to focus more on those. And according to Catherine Asaro and Laura Anne Gilman, Luna is going to be around for at least two more years. They actually fired several authors they already had contracts with like Caitlin Brennan, Gale Dayton, Sarah Zettel, etc. And according to the Luna boards, they were still taking manuscript submissions as recently as a few months ago.

Would you mind posting some links because I hadn't heard anything about the whole imprint being canceled and the last I knew the authors were assuring everyone that Luna as a whole was fine. This was in September after I let people at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books knowing about some of the series being dropped and people went way overboard saying the whole line was canceled.

41wyvernfriend
gen. 17, 2007, 12:52 pm

You're right. Dear Reader stated that it was demising but CE Murphy (in the comments and her livejournal as Mizkit) states that it has been restructured (phew!) and she has sold a few into 2008

42Quaisior
gen. 19, 2007, 7:01 pm

That's good to know. I'm really enjoying Lackey's Luna series and I was hoping she would get to finish it. Same goes for Asaro's second trilogy, which ties into her first one. I'm also looking forward to reading C. E. Murphy's books, and I'm still holding out hope for Christie Golden.

This weekend I read Susan Grant's Your Planet or Mine? While OK it's my least favorite of the books I've read by this author. Guess I'll take it back to the library and not put it on my mental 'look for this to buy' list.

I also read enough of Goddess of the Rose to know that I will be looking for more books by P. C. Cast.

Amazon is predicting it will get here sometime in the middle of February.

Hmm.. I see it is still on pre-order (Blood Bound). Not sure, but it was the only copy at Borders when I bought it. There was one part in the book that gave me goose bumps. You'll know it when you read it.

I started Colleen Gleason's The Rest Falls Away. It take's place in London in the 19th century and the heroine is a vampire slayer. Kinda makes it hard to get to a stake if you have it in your garder under all those layers of skirt. :)

52cjlib

I started reading The Rest Falls Away and couldn't stay focused so I decided to read Fantasy Lover since I bought it and Blood Ties book two: Possession today. This is the second Sherrilyn Kenyon book for me. I listened to Dark Side of the Moon and didn't care for it so never explored anymore of Kenyon's books. But after seeing all the fans on here I decided to give her another shot.

Has anyone read Christopher Moore's You Suck? I'm tempted to download it to listen to.

DL I read Fantasy Lover and it was better than Dark Side of the Moon. I'm not sure if Kenyon will be a favorite of mine or not yet. I'll try one more since I'm still undecided. Did you like Blood Bound?

I read Blood ties book two: Possession by Jennifer Armintrout. I'm looking for to the next one of the series. And I re-read Full Moon Rising because I'm picking up Kissing Sin asap.

56Jenson_AKA_DL
Editat: gen. 31, 2007, 3:50 pm

Yes, I totally enjoyed Blood Bound :-) Mercy seems to have the luck of attracting everyone! *sigh*

The only thing was I shouldn't have read it right after reading Stolen. The premise for both stories were rather similar and I had to keep reminding myself that Adam wasn't Jeremy, Samuel wasn't Clay and Mercy wasn't Elaina.

Night Pleasures is the book that takes place after Fantasy Lover and I liked that one almost as much if you wanted to give it a shot. A couple others from that series I enjoyed the most were Night Play and Unleash the Night, both of those were about shapeshifters.

*edited to get the touchstones to work* :-)

57cjlib

I hope you like Night Pleasures! Grace and Julian make appearances in the book. I always kind of liked seeing past characters showing up in subsequent books, it lets you keep an eye on what they're doing LOL

I've only read Bitten and Stolen by Kelley Armstrong so far and I definately preferred Stolen.

Right now I'm almost done with You Slay Me and am not quite sure what to move on to next. Either Ill Wind, The Dragon's Heart, Sorcery and Cecelia or Emma Holly's, The Demon's Daughter.

Has anyone else read Emma Holly? I've enjoyed the few stories I've read by her so far.

New book in Mercedes Lackey's 500 Kingdoms series which started with The Fairy Godmother and One Good Knight is just out Fortune's Fool, and I just finished it. If you like the other two, I'd recommend this one. It doesn't have the grittyness of her Elementals books but it is a pleasant story, and will keep you turning the pages.

The heroine is Katya, the Sea King's seventh daughter, and the hero is Sasha, the seventh son of a king who is the Wise Fool. A jinn is kidnapping young women and making a desert around the palace left behind by the villian of a previous book.

I enjoy the subversive nature of the idea of "Tradition" shaping the stories in these books -- it's a kind of postmodern commentary on both fantasy and romance without being overly intrusive on the actual telling of the story. Sort of a wink to the reader. But I'm a big fan of all kinds of recursive fictions.
