Quilters need more than books. What about fabric! Inspired by the Favorite Bookstores group, I thought it would be fun to list some of the best quilt shops.

Fabric Depot - www.fabricdepot.com

Not exclusively a quilt shop, Fabric Depot claims to be the largest fabric store in the West. They are in a warehouse covering 73,000 square feet, but they are locally owned and not part of a chain. The quilting section alone has over 8000 bolts, and 1000+ books and patterns. Open Mon-Sat 9am-9pm, Sun 10am-7pm. Frequent sales at 30-40% off, closeouts at 50% off in all departments, and NO sales tax in Oregon. You can also buy from their website.

Josephine's Dry Goods - www.josephinesdrygoods.com

Josephine's carries fashion fabrics including silks, velvets, cashmere, woolens, linens, cottons and rayons from all over the world. They have Liberty of London and other fine cottons suitable for quilting, as well as bridal silks and laces, and a unique collection of buttons. Open Mon-Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5. The surrounding area is developing as a "Fiber Arts" district, with fabric shops, yarn/ needlepoint/ etc. shops, and the Button Emporium. Oh yeah, and they are located only 2 short blocks south of Powell's, so you can get a book fix too! (Powell's is open to 11 pm daily, and has a large section of quilts and crafts books, both new and out of print.)

The Button Emporium & Ribbonry - www.buttonemporium.com

Huge inventoryof buttons and ribbons to embellish quilting, embroidery, fashion design, period costumes, doll making or precious button collections. They also carry some fabrics. Located 4 short blocks south of Josephine's, within walking distance from the streetcar, several yarn/ needlepoint/ etc. shops, and Powell's. Open Tues–Fri 10:30am - 5:30 PM, Sat 11-3 or by appointment. You can also order from their website.

Fabric in the City (no website)
1034 SW Taylor Street, Portland (503) 224-0320
Located around the corner from The Button Emporium. Batiks, Asian inspired fabrics, Kaffe Fasset, novelty fabrics.

Fibers in Motion - www.fibersinmotion.com

Located in Multnomah Village (SW Portland), Fibers in Motion specializes in art quilts and wearable art. They carry international and contemporary fabrics including Batiks, Asian, African, Aboriginal. Favorite designers include Kaffe Fassett, Jane Sassaman, Valori Wells. Frequent classes by Barbara Shapel and other well known quilters.

Multnomah Village has specialty shops, galleries, antiques, restaurants, and more. Fiber-oriented shops near Fibers in Motion include Northwest Wools (yarn shop) and Village Beads. www.multnomahvillage.org

Please don't respond to this thread unless you want to add more quilt shops for Portland. Instead, please start a new thread, listing the subject like this:
"Favorite quilt shops - state - city"
Then when someone is traveling to a specific area, they can easily find recommended quilt shops to investigate.

Edited to fix the links. When I find time, I will start separate threads for "Portland Area" and "Oregon Coast".
