I was just curious about what pace and setup all of us will be going for for this challenge.

For me, this is a re-read. I've read all of the ten books at least once, several of them two or three times. I've never read them all in correct order though, so that will be the big aim for me. I look forward to getting a clearer grasp of some of the minor storylines this way (Destruction and Foxglove especially, I think).

I'll be lending the books from my local library (having just moved to this small town, I'm happy to say it's a good one!), and if I don't get bogged down by waiting lists and such, I plan on reading two a month. I don't plan on going for any of the spin-offs.

What about the rest of you guys?

Not sure about my pacing.. Will try and space them out and not devour them as this is a reread (I think my 4th?). I had planned to read each one in conjunction with The Sandman Companion by Hy Bender and maybe look at spin offs.. Can't remember what I have until I get home.

I will be pacing all of my reading based on availability from my library. While I am reading volume 1 of Sandman right now, I probably won't make it to volume 2 until February and work from there.

I'll probably be doing something similar to Claire but will probably ignore the spin offs this time...

My daughter in law suggested that I read the Death: The High Cost of Living and Death: The Time of Your Life first then go to Preludes and Nocturnes so I am planning to read Death #1 today

gen. 7, 2013, 3:14pm

I don't think I'd have wanted to read Death's stories first. I think it unfolded very well and introduced the characters in their own time, I'd consider reading the spin-offs a bit spoiler-y.

I'll probably read a volume of the original series each month or perhaps every three weeks.

I'm planning on spacing them out too, but knowing me, I'll probably just mow through them... :)

Like Claire, I'm reading the Bender book concurrently since I feel I need to add something extra besides just rereading the series. I've already learned one thing from it that I found interesting; the Sandman series actually started as a marketing effort. DC Comics had commissioned Gaiman and McKean to do a new Black Orchid series, but felt that they weren't well-known enough, so they asked them to do something else before the Orchid-launch so that their names would at least be familiar. I'd say Sandman has well exceeded expectations. :) (And, Black Orchid ended up being published before Sandman anyways and sold just fine.)

I'll be reading Death: The High Cost of Living and Death: The Time of Your Life as well, since I've not read those before.

I'm reading Death: The High Cost of Living and it is my first foray into the world of graphic novels. Reading something with so many illustrations is quite a different experience. Enjoying it I think...

You know I started out by reading Sandmen with the volume Worlds End, then proceeded to read them in the wrong order :) still enjoyed very much and wasn't it fun when I reread them I order and saw the story flow.

->9 ccookie:
I'm looking forwarfd to hearing what you think, especially since you don't have her history from the Sandman series in your baggage yet. One of my favorite moments in Sandman was meeting her for the first time.

->10 clfisha:
I can't imagine what that would be like - some things must just have made no sense at all. Actually, a lot of parts don't make sense when you read them the first time even if you do read in order, so maybe it doesn't matter. :)

gen. 9, 2013, 7:31am

11 heh, it actually has a huuuuge spoiler in that volume too.. so I kind of knew what was coming.. Luckily it's all about people telling stories so it was easy to dip into.

gen. 10, 2013, 8:51am

I seem to remember that Claire tried to get me to read it but I waited until I could read them in order and was a bit underwhelmed by the first one

gen. 12, 2013, 5:22pm

I'm completely new to the Sandman series, so I'll be going through the 10 volumes, starting with the first. I'm hoping to get through one or two each month.

So many people over in the 2013 Category Challenge were talking about this group, so I decided to give it a try. I have one Sandman comic that my boyfriend from graduate school gave me. He loved the series and the volume he gave me had a cat in it. >^..^
