The Santa Monica Antiquarian Book Fair will be held on Saturday and Sunday February 9-10, 2013 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium at 1855 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401. Saturday hours are 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday hours are 11 am to 4 pm. General admission is $8 though booksellers showing there may have passes available.
As I have stated before, buying older books online is nice and you can find things that it is hard to find elsewhere. However, it is also very good to shop at the dwindling number of used and antiquarian bookstores and discover things related to your interests that you may not have known about (serendipity). The same is also true for antiquarian book fairs where dozens of sellers gather and show some of their best material, things you'd seldom get a chance to see in person otherwise.
This book fair is a "shadow fair" for the big International Antiquarian Book Fair in San Francisco on the following weekend. At the big fair, sellers from around the world gather and it is not uncommon to see books in the 3 to 6 figures. Most collectors these days can't buy at those levels. However, prices tend to be lower at the shadow fair. In fact, sellers planning to exhibit in San Francisco may either have a booth or simply shop to find great items to take up north the next weekend. Of course, if you attend the Santa Monica fair, you have a chance to get these items.
Our booth will be L-10 in the lobby area near the snack bar. The first link has a list of the sellers participating and their specialties. Our specialty is juvenile series books, especially Nancy Drew and similar series. In that series we'll have books from $5 on up to 4 figures, including some scarce first printings for some titles.
Don't simply complain that there aren't good bookstores and book fairs around anymore. Take action and attend ones that are near you and buy a book or two. You'll get a chance to converse with people who love books as much as you do. You can learn or share knowledge with them and build not only a business relationship but perhaps a friendship.
We catalog our collections on LT, of course. In time we may catalog our inventory under a separate account. If you visit the fair, stop by our booth and say "hello." It's always great to meet another Thingamabrarian.
