Mark your SPOILERS please!

Since this book is coming out in 7 days I figured we needed a place to talk this to death. :)

ETA: spoiler warning

abr. 30, 2013, 5:31pm

Okay so I messed up the name of this thread and can't fix it. It should be Dead Ever After! PS Don't start a thread at work. :/

abr. 30, 2013, 5:36pm

Great idea, Roberta! And people will figure it out - the 2013 should give it away. Actually, I've been having trouble remembering Dead Ever After. I think I've got it pretty firmly stuck in my head, but for a while I could not remember the title.

So you and I are guessing Sam - it would be interesting if it turned out to be Eric, but I don't see how that could happen. I do have a soft spot for Eric.

I reiterate that I do not watch "Trueblood" so nothing from the show is influencing me.

abr. 30, 2013, 5:47pm

Spoiler if you haven't read book #12

I don't watch the show either Dejah. I still think it is Sam because of her wanting kids. Sam technically did come back from the dead in the last book. So hey I think he qualifies!

Editat: abr. 30, 2013, 5:54pm

Interesting argument. You know I'm with you on the kids element - I think that's one of the biggest reasons he makes the most sense. The other guys with whom she could have had kids have all let her down badly.

Shoot, I'm still second guessing the reread thing. I could fit a few in - but wouldn't it be better to go back through the lot of them after?

abr. 30, 2013, 7:36pm

Devour #13 first. Then reread.

abr. 30, 2013, 9:28pm

I know at this point that's what makes sense. It's just that now Monday or Tuesday seem very far off....

abr. 30, 2013, 10:05pm

I'm in the middle of a really good book that's also fairly large at 600 pages (The Secret History) so I'm tempted to reread them all just so I can support my argument but I do want to keep reading my current book. Depending on what happens in book 13 I might reread the entire series then send you all a long ranting essay on why it should have been Eric lol.

abr. 30, 2013, 10:22pm

It could be Eric - Harris has surprised me before. Like I said, I'm really very fond of Eric and like him and Sookie together - Dead to the World is one of my favorites in the series. I just don't think that's the way she's going to go. I think she's saved Sam for the last love.

But, yeah, I kind of wish it could be Eric.

abr. 30, 2013, 10:31pm

Exactly what Dejah said Lisa! I love Eric too, but he's the amazing love affair you will never forget, not a true love. He has too many ambitions and obligations. Sookie deserves a relationship without secrets and agendas. So does Sam.

As long as she doesn't end up with Bill, I'm okay.

Editat: maig 1, 2013, 1:41am

ok excuse my fuzzy memory but at one point Sookie's great-great-grandfather stated that Eric was the most perfect vampire he's ever met - his characteristics and temperament etc - and that Sookie made him more human and therefore even better.

And they have exchanged blood so they are always going to have a connection.

And she is part Fairy and Eric knows this and how important she is.

and there was something in the last book about Sam that made me think nope he's not the one.... did he walk away from her or something?

oooo for photographic memory - I wish I had it!

edited to correct an appalling mistake - one should not post a message while at work multitasking!

abr. 30, 2013, 10:42pm

I have to disagree with you Roberta - I don't see why Eric couldn't be her true love - but I agree about the politics hidden agendas - Sookie always hated that.

You make some good points, Lisa - that connection will always be there. I just don't know that Eric can let go of ambition enough to be want Sookie wants. Or if vampire politics would ever be far enough removed from them to allow for a 'normal' life.

Grrr...I want that book now!

Sometimes my amazon pre-orders arrive on Monday instead of the Tuesday publication date. Maybe I'll get lucky this time. I'm making no plans for either night. You guys have gotten me all excited about this! I was so calm and disinterested!

abr. 30, 2013, 10:44pm

Hi, ladies. Just recently joined and saw your thread and couldn't resist commenting! I love Charlaine, and her "dead" books, especially.
I feel pretty certain it's going to be Sam for Sookie, too. At the end of last book she used the Cluviel D'or to bring Sam back - and it could only be used to make a wish for someone she loved. When she realizes what she's done, as Eric disappears, she tells herself she'll think about what that means later.
But,yeah, Eric is almost too good to let go!

abr. 30, 2013, 10:45pm

Lisa, Sookie broke their blood bond. Eric was PO'd because he didn't know when she was in trouble. Sookie was mad that Eric didn't tell her that his master had arranged his marriage to Oklahoma.

You are right about Sam and Sookie but I can't remember what it was. I just remember that at the very end I thought since she used the magic fairy object to save him instead of release Eric I figured she was leading to Sam. CH is very sneaky though.

I'm off next Wednesday!!!! I'll be glued to this book.

abr. 30, 2013, 10:48pm

Dejah you are right, but I think it is a true love that would not be a lasting love because Eric is a vampire and Sookie will never become a vampire. I love Sookie and Eric together but I loved Sookie with her nephew Hunter and I would love for her to grow old with Sam.

I am so excited too!

abr. 30, 2013, 10:49pm

Welcome Natalie!

Editat: abr. 30, 2013, 10:59pm

Welcome to LT, Natalie! I hope you've found LT to be a congenial place. It can take a little while to integrate into the groups, but there are such varied interests it's amazing how many different ways we can connect. I know that many of the folks whose threads I follow and who visit me have no interest in Sookie, but we overlap in other ways. Of course, I think they are very, very foolish to pass on Sookie, but not everyone can be convinced!

You're right - Sookie has to acknowledge that she loves Sam. But I suspect that it could be some wiggle room in how she loves Sam. Don't get me wrong - I do think it's Sam. But I hate the thought of her giving up Eric!

I think a series reread is definitely in order. After. I warn you all now that I will stay up all night the night I get Dead Ever After and finish it. I won't post any spoilers, though.

ETA: I totally forgot to say that I think Sookie's reluctance to become a vampire is the other big stumbling block to happiness with Eric. *sniff*

abr. 30, 2013, 10:59pm

Thanks! I'll definitely be checking back on this thread. My copy of the book is preodered for my Kindle, so I'll be looking for it to show up.

abr. 30, 2013, 11:01pm

Natalie - do you have a thread set up in the 75ers group yet? I just went looking and couldn't find you.

abr. 30, 2013, 11:04pm

Dejah- Sookie is my guilty pleasure! I wrote that on Katie's (katiekrug) thread and she thought for a moment I wrote "Snookie" from reality tv. Aack!!! I laughed so hard. That is someone's guilty pleasure but not mine.

We should decide on a date when spoilers will be given free reign. As I said up top just note the spoilers and it should be fine.

What I'm trying to say is that I want a place where we can discuss this freely because I'm so excited!

abr. 30, 2013, 11:06pm

I'm afraid spoilers might be too tempting - it would be soooo easy to take one little peek....

I have sincerely enjoyed this series for years now. I'm sorry to see it end, although I want Sookie to be happy. Yes, I know, I'm writing as if she were a real person....

abr. 30, 2013, 11:07pm

I thought she broke their 'marriage bond' thingy they did with the ancient knife but not the blood bond. Because Bill also has a bond with her for the same reasons. Maybe I got that wrong... darn it you guys are beginning to sway me.

If it's not Eric I hope it's a tidy end and he dies in some way.. harsh but he can't be there... he's too curious and would never stay away forever. Or would decide he needed her help/talent in some way etc.

Thank you for reminding me about the end of the last one.

abr. 30, 2013, 11:13pm

No, I haven't set up my own thread yet. I've been lurking on Lt for a couple of weeks now, checking out various threads. And everyday I'm more excited about this site; both by its excellence as a tool to enhance my own reading, and by its users attitudes towards their books and each other.
I have a wide range of reading interests and am so happy to find a site where others interests are as varied as my own.
Thanks for the welcome. I'll get a thread set up soon!

maig 1, 2013, 10:58am

FYI, I've added this to the group wiki under Group Reads, even though it's not as of yet. I'm expecting it to morph into one when the book comes out! :)

maig 1, 2013, 11:07am

Excellent! There must be more Sookie fans out there just waiting for next week....

maig 1, 2013, 12:17pm

Thanks Jim!

maig 2, 2013, 11:25am

For those who enjoy the TIOLI Challenges: several Sookie books have made it into Challenges already this month. Here's the list so far:

1. Dead Until Dark - #12
2. Living Dead in Dallas - #10
4. Dead to the World - #9
13. Dead Ever After - #12

maig 4, 2013, 2:07pm

Nina has added a May/Mars SF&F Challenge - #21. I'd like to move Dead Ever After over to it from Challenge #12 of that works for you, Lisa?

maig 4, 2013, 5:05pm

Yup no probs for me! #12 is my - doesn't fit anywhere else challenge lol

maig 4, 2013, 5:15pm

The same for me, so I suspect I'll end up with plenty there anyway!

If you haven't done it already, I'll go move us both.

maig 4, 2013, 5:39pm

I'm wondering if I'll get the book at 12 midnight NZ time or US time??? It's through kobo and I'm not sure how they operate. I have tried to pre-order a book from kobo before and it has just flatly been a waste of time because the date has been and gone and no book!

maig 5, 2013, 12:38am

I have no idea when you'll get it - I hope you post as soon as you do. I plan to post as soon as mine arrives!

maig 5, 2013, 6:11pm

Okay friends I have decided to get Sookie 13 from the library instead of pre-ordering it from Amazon. Due to having to hire caregivers for my mom while I am at work my budget is tight. I am still buying a new book this month it just isn't Sooks book. Here is why.

My reason being that one of my favorite Scandi crime authors, Jussi Adler-Olsen is coming to Houston for a book signing on May 30th. I am going to pay full price for latest (in the US) Department Q series book. I am so excited about it. It makes up for not reading Sookie on Tuesday!

I am #44 on the queue for Sookie 13 but the library has 30 copies. I am hoping I don't have to wait too long. In the meantime I anxiously await your thoughts on the book.

maig 5, 2013, 7:17pm

Your plan makes perfect sense, Roberta. I'm certain there are lots of people who'll read it and have it back in a matter of days. After all, who can resist Sookie? And how nice that you'll be able to get a book by a favorite author signed!

Per amazon my copy has shipped via FedEx Smartpost. Based on prior experience that lessens my chance of getting it tomorrow (Monday) but I should have it Tuesday. We'll see.

maig 5, 2013, 7:27pm

I'm so excited to hear what you think of it Dejah. I also think I'll have it fairly soon. At least I hope I do.

maig 5, 2013, 7:32pm

#44 on the list is pretty good! I just added myself to my local library waitlist to see how long it would be... #160

Editat: maig 5, 2013, 7:39pm

Lisa that is long! My county, Fort Bend, library system has only ONE book on order listed with #42 waiting. The Harris County Public Library has 30 copies with #207 waiting. I am so glad Houston Public Library has 30 copies with a smaller queue! It's about 14 miles away but I won't mind the drive. They have a lot of stuff I can pick up plus I'll run errands on the way.

ETA: I think the one copy listed is an error. Surely they ordered a few more than that!

maig 6, 2013, 10:28am

I'm #18 on the library waiting list which is no problem since there will be 57 reservable copies. The key words being WILL BE. It's still showing as On Order. *whines*

maig 6, 2013, 10:32am

Morphy! #18 that is almost like winning the lottery. :)

That On Order nonsense is no good. Only thing worse is In Transit when it is like that for five weeks! I kid you not.

Sometimes there are major shenanigans at my library.

maig 6, 2013, 10:36am

Per the tracking, my book made it to my local post office just after 5am this morning, so it should have made it onto the carrier's vehicle today, but it's not showing that it did. I suspect I won't know if it made it until after the mail arrives.

I have faith, Morphy, that all 57 copies will magically show up tomorrow and you'll get a call about your book hold first thing in the morning! Do you care to chime in on the Eric / Sam discussion?

BTW, has anyone else noticed the tiger tail on the cover? Or the wolf? Will Quinn and Alcide be making appearances? I'm wondering if we'll be treated to reprise of all Sookie's former beaux.....

maig 6, 2013, 10:43am

Dejah I did not notice that. Did you order After Dead? I just noticed that on Amazon. CH is really milking it out.

maig 6, 2013, 10:46am

I haven't ordered After Dead yet, although I might. I may wait for the library copy. We'll see.

I can't blame her for milking it. Her other series have never been very successful and odds are she'll never write anything this popular again. At least she was brave enough to bring it to a close and (presumably) let Sookie be happy!

Editat: maig 6, 2013, 10:54am

I have an author alert at the library which allows me to reserved copies of books very soon after they are ordered. This allows me to be near the top of the reserve list of favorite authors. The downside is I'm only allowed to have 30 books at a time on reserve. This can be a problem.

I'd like Sookie to be with Sam. I've never liked Eric. But I have a sneaking suspicion she's not going to end up with any of them.

Has anyone read her other books? I read and liked the Shakespeare series and have recently started the Aurora series but don't like it quite as much.

maig 6, 2013, 11:36am

I thought she might end up alone too just because she is walking down the road alone on the cover. Dejah why did you draw my attention to the cover!

I am in the Sam club too. I absolutely LOVE Eric. He is not forever material but he is definitely the "fantasy" guy. Bill was always boring to me.

I haven't read any of her other books but I have them wish listed at the library.

maig 6, 2013, 3:54pm

Sookie has arrived!

This is just a flying visit and I can't start reading Dead Ever After quite yet, but I thought there might be some folks interested in the endpapers - it's interesting to me that Bill doesn't appear to be represented.....

Sorry the image isn't better but I don't have time to mess with it right now!

And in reference to the cover: is Sookie walking alone into a sunrise or waiting for a sunset? And what's with the tomatoes?

maig 6, 2013, 6:17pm

no book yet via kobo... is it 05/07/13 in the US yet??

maig 6, 2013, 6:48pm

Lisa no it is 5/6 still.

maig 6, 2013, 7:10pm

I know who she ends up with - neener, neener, neener.

maig 6, 2013, 7:34pm

I refuse to cheat and look at the end of the book! I refuse to cheat and look at the end of the book!

Lisa I just got lucky when my amazon pre-order arrived on Monday instead of Tuesday. I'm still finishing some things up because I know when I start reading I probably won't stop.

I also promise not to reveal who she ends up with - nor will I taunt people with my knowledge!!!!. I never knew you had a mean streak, Morphy!

Does anybody have any ideas about the tomatoes?

maig 6, 2013, 8:03pm

Naughty Morphy! LOL!

Dejah I have no idea about the tomatoes.

maig 6, 2013, 8:38pm

I am a meany-poo-poo-head.

I don't even have the book. I looked it up online. I couldn't stand not knowing.

maig 7, 2013, 12:34am

IT'S LOADING NOW!!!!!!! Will be back once I've finished it :)

maig 7, 2013, 2:32am

I'm done. And I'm sorry it's over. *sigh* *snork* *sob*

Ok - I'm better now.

maig 7, 2013, 9:49am

OMG! I am green with envy!

maig 7, 2013, 8:57pm

Do we need a SPOILERS thread?

maig 7, 2013, 9:29pm

I kind of created this as a spoilers thread. Just mark spoiler above your post. It is all good.

maig 7, 2013, 9:30pm

I'll edit the first post to say that there will be spoilers here.

maig 8, 2013, 2:53am

Just finished the book; I'm happy with Sookie's ending. I think Harris gave her the kind of resolution she needed most. She leaves her at a place where she confidence in herself and her place in the world.
I liked it very much.

maig 8, 2013, 9:26am

Oooh! Ooh! Oooh! It's in transit at the library! Any day now!

maig 8, 2013, 9:33am

*Happy dance* for Morphy!

maig 9, 2013, 11:32am

Hi, my 75er friends! Glad to see everyone is still reading and posting like crazy.
Thanks, Roberta, for alerting me to this thread! I just checked and I'm 34 in the queue (started out at 46 two months ago) so the first 12 people have a copy. I'm one of those who can never peek at the end of the book.
Chiming in on the Bill/Eric question; I always found Eric more sexy and dangerous. My favorite episode was when he lost his memory and Sookie had a gorgeous Viking boy toy for a while.
Is everyone a series watcher as well? I've been seeing the trailers for the new season (only have to wait until June 16).

maig 9, 2013, 9:44pm

You are welcome mamzel! I loved Dead to the World. It is one of my favorite Sookie books.

I saw the first season of True Blood on Netflix but that is it.

maig 9, 2013, 10:06pm

Dead to the World is one of my favorites, too. I keep saying a watch the tv series when the book series is complete, so I suppose the time has come....

maig 10, 2013, 1:33pm

I actually spoke to someone yesterday who said she hates Eric - even as he was in Dead to the World. She said she thought he was creepy with his lost memory - go figure. Her favorite of Sookie's beaus was Quinn, in case anyone was curious.

I posted this over on my thread, but I thought I'd put it over here, too, in case anyone had any thoughts or comments:

I'm rereading Charlaine Harris' first Sookie novel Dead Until Dark (which I have read many, many times although not for a few years now) and I am struck anew by how perfectly she hit Sookie's voice from the very beginning of the series. Harris nails young, Southern, naive, smart, relatively uneducated, kind and hopeful from the first page. I particularly appreciate her portrayals of Southerners. She brings forth all the quirks and oddities and contradictory behavior of denizens of the region without falling into caricature or being patronizing, mocking or cruel. I suppose it helps that she herself lives in Arkansas!

maig 10, 2013, 1:42pm

Go figure. Quinn, huh. He always just kind of left me cold.
I completely agree with you about Harris, though. All her characters seem to ring true, and in an effortless kind of way. She reads so easily and naturally it's possible to miss how good a writer she really is!

maig 10, 2013, 2:19pm

I didn't like Quinn for Sookie either. For a tiger he certainly didn't have a lot of backbone. One of my favorite lines of the Sookie books is in Definitely Dead “Leave the girl alone, Clete, and let's get back on the road," the tall driver said, and his voice had that "I'm done with you" edge to it. "I don't know who this guy is, but I don't think he changes into a nutria.”

Your take on how Harris portrays Southerners, especially of the small town variety, is spot on Dejah.

maig 10, 2013, 2:58pm

It's at the library waiting for pickup. Whoo hoo!

maig 10, 2013, 3:09pm

>65 nmcognito: I agree, Natalie - I think she's under rated as an author in part because of genres. But if I'm honest I think her pre-Sookie mysteries were good, but she came into her own when she created a telepathic barmaid.

As for Quinn, well, he seemed ok early on, but was a disappointment. I thought it was pretty clear that he was never going to be the one for her.

>66 luvamystery65: Great line, Roberta! As I reread Dead Until Dark I keep noticing all these great little snippets - Harris is so funny! And yet her Lily Bard mysteries are so dark - not that Sookie doesn't have dark, but the humor lifts it up.

>67 Morphidae: Woohoo Morphy! And kudos to the quick readers in front of you! Enjoy!

maig 10, 2013, 3:15pm

Actually, I'm one of the first in line!

maig 10, 2013, 4:12pm

Dejah, I agree with you that the "Dead" series is her best work. I read a few of the Lily Bard and Harper Connelly novels and they were okay, but they don't spring to like quite the way Sookie does.

maig 10, 2013, 5:01pm

finished the book last night! I will hold my comments until more people have read it. So sad that the series is over :(

I watched the first two seasons of True Blood. I loved how they got the southern gothic element so right and the small town characters. However I didn't like Tara's character especially in the season about Eggs and the Maenad - so different from the book!!

maig 15, 2013, 10:05pm

I'm in love with this thread!!!!!!!

I wanted to wait til I finished it before I came to read the posts.

Welcome to Natalie!!

I'm so happy to know there are other 75ers that love Sookie. I thought I was all alone in my guilty pleasure!!

Sookie is my first of Harris' books, but after I fell in love with Bon Temps, I read some of her other series. I really enjoyed the Aurora Teagarden series (still ongoing, never finished). I also liked the Harper Connelly series until it got a bit creepy / incestuous feeling. I've only read two of her Shakespeare series.

Hmm, I am now wanting to reread all the Sookies & pick back up with her other series. Massively bad influences, the lot of you! :P

maig 15, 2013, 10:20pm

Hi Tina! We all need our guilty pleasures!

maig 15, 2013, 10:58pm

Tina is here! Woo hoo! I still haven't read the book yet. I am #30 in one FBCL queue and #32 HPL queue. I am inching my way up.

maig 18, 2013, 3:33am

All right I'm done mourning and I'm ready to talk about Dead Ever After

*********POSSILE SPOILERS********

I love/hated this book. I love that I was back in Sookie's world. Like Dejah has said Sookie's character has been spot on since the beginning. I liked that the book showed how Sookie had started off feeling like an outsider at the beginning of the series and was now widely supported with friends by the town of Bon Temps.

I just felt no excitement or interest in the story and I don't like Sam and this book did nothing to change this. The whole storyline felt like it had only one purpose - to wind things up. It felt tame and dull; it lacked spark. Yet I can't say it was improbable or that any of the characters acted falsely. Some of the best books in the series was when there were vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters, and fae with lots of mayhem, in house politics, bizzare ceremony and tradition, feuds and funny moments. Some how Charlaine Harris created this other world that was so unreal yet made it all make sense. I didn't get that with this last book :(

maig 18, 2013, 8:13am

I felt the same. Like it was a parade of all the characters just to wrap things up with little life in it. And the "happily ever after" was more like "meh ever after."

maig 24, 2013, 11:04pm

Still ignoring the spoilers! LOL! I am now #12 in the queue at Houston Public Library. Yes!

juny 14, 2013, 3:54pm

@ #37, luvamystery65,
I am a librarian with Fort Bend County Libraries. That is an error. Some books, when we have them on order, show up in our catalog as one copy, even when we order many copies. I'm not sure why this happens. It might have something to do with one of the vendors we order from.

juny 14, 2013, 9:21pm

#78 1luckylibrarian

Yes I edited to add on the comment that it seemed like there was more than one copy ordered. It used to always say how many copies were ordered and it seems with the last update that now it will say only one sometimes until the copies are there.

Which branch are you at?

I do love our library system! The Sienna Branch is right by my house. :)

juny 15, 2013, 11:48pm

OK so I finished Dead Ever After and it felt a little rushed and forced but I am happy with who Sookie ended up with. It was who I wanted from the start. :)

Go Pam! I liked her happy ending. LOL!

juny 19, 2013, 12:04pm

# 79 luvamystery65

I've worked at a few branches, working my way up. I started at the main branch, George Memorial, in Richmond. Then, I helped open the newest branch, University Branch. I managed the Albert George Branch, in Needville for a while. And now I'm back at George Memorial again. The Sienna Branch is very nice, and the staff is excellent!

Thanks for loving FBCL!
