Anyone else doing a re-read of The Shining in prep for the sequel Doctor Sleep coming out next week?

Yeah, I'm planning on it, but I will almost certainly not get to it before the new one comes out; it will probably not be until around Halloween time at the earliest.

I was thinking about it, but I have so much else on deck that I might give it a miss. Hm....decisions, decisions.

I did a re-read about a month ago... I remembered it was good, but after re-reading it I realized why it was great... and why I hated the movie so much... it left out or changed everything that made the book so great.

So they're at the Overlook and Ullman & co are gone.
I really like how well King gets into the heads of our family. Especially Danny and the way he perceives things he doesn't quite understand. Wendy is happy to be claimed by Jack, but I cringe at how vulnerable she is. If he goes down, she goes, too. So stressful. Jack just seems weak-willed and romantic to me. Like he thinks the world should work another way, acts accordingly and is surprised by reality every time. Very deft. This is King firing on all cylinders for sure.

>5 Bookmarque:

King has said that if ever one of his books is taught in schools, The Shining should be the one. I don't think I would put it at the very top of my "must-read King" novels list (The Stand and The Long Walk would probably rank a bit higher), but The Shining is really the one where you see King emerging as a novelist with his own completely distinctive voice, imho.

I'm going to reread it but I think I'll wait until Doctor Sleep is closer to coming out in paperback.
