For those planning to attend the Great Portland (Oregon) Meetup on Saturday, February 1, here is a thread where we can coordinate our activities. Mark (msf59) is coming to town and we intend to make it a memorable visit!

My understanding is that we'll meet for a small bite to eat (nourishment for book-buying, you know) around noon -- LOCATION TBD -- and then go spend an as-yet-undecided amount of time browsing at Powell's City of Books. Then we will convene at a local brewpub to compare notes, eat more, and (of course), drink beer.

I told MrMorphy about Powell's and he started drooling. His words, "Can we say they would have to drag us out kicking and screaming?" I love being married to another book lover.

Where is everybody staying? Mark, are you staying at Kim's?

14EBT1002
gen. 15, 2014, 11:07 pm

#12: LOL.
It will be interesting to see how many books I let myself buy on this visit. Will I just buy the four to which I'm ordinarily entitled for my Thingaversary, or will I invoke Paul C's version of the rule?

I must find a good canvas bag to bring with me to carry my loot.

Hello! I am alive!! I am researching best pubs near Powell's. Looking for within walking distance with lots of beer choices. There are a few and I will talk it over with Mark to get his vote. Can't wait to meet all of you in person!!

I am staying in Salem, so I'll be fine. It's less than 50 miles, plus it will be the last night with my sister and her family. I head back on Sunday morning.

Kim sent me some info, on what is close by Powell's in Portland. ^ I found Deschutes Brewery within walking distance. Yeah, baby! And there are a couple coffee shops nearby, for a little LT Shoot the Breeze session before we go to the BOOKS! This should be a lot of fun, but where are the fellas, it looks like I'll be flying solo and you know how bashful I am.

#18: "I'll be flying solo and you know how bashful I am."
Yeah, right.

Deschutes has long been one of my favorite breweries.

22SuziQoregon
gen. 16, 2014, 12:08 pm

Deschutes is a good choice - close by and good beer. There's also a Rogue Brewpub a few blocks farther away. I can't get to a link right now because my work filters sites with 'beer' (clearly a conspiracy).

23msf59
gen. 16, 2014, 12:40 pm

Ellen & Suzi- I am not a huge fan of Deschutes bottled beer but I would love to try more of their brews on tap. Actually, I prefer Widmer beers in bottles.

Ellen- Whaddya mean "Yeah, right. "?

LATE BREAKING NEWS BULLETIN:

My tenants are moving out early, and I'm moving in early, and the POD is being deliveed EARLY and So..... wait for it: I can come down to Portland for this Meet-up! Hip hip hooray!

I think I'll drive down with the dogs Saturday morning, and plan to spend Saturday night somewhere near my friends who live just outside of Portland proper. I can do all the pre, and post, book shopping activities, as well as book shopping at Powell's. I am very excited.

I'll watch this thread for the details, yes?

Mark, my friend, we can find another place for brews if you'd like. There is a place called Pints which isn't too far (but I'm a walker; I don't know how far is too far). I've never tried their beer.

There is, of course, also Widmer Bros nearby.

OK - Now that I'm home I can get to the link for Rogue Brewing - their pub in Portland is one of our favorites. The Rogue Distillery and Public House.

It's a 7 block walk from Powell's but it's also not as big as the Deschutes pub.

I just saw (on FB) a friend from LT who was an original member of the real live, face to face, book group which Ellen and I are now a part of - and I sent her a message about our Meet-Up. I don't think she is in the 75 books group but she is a lovely bookish reader lady despite that. She had to resign from the F2F group due to her moving to Vancouver, WA, to be with parents. Across the river from Portland! I hope she will be able to join us.

And also, I need a "when" for showing up at Powells.

I'm in! YEAH! Thanks Karen for remembering me!

I just discovered Umbria Café - about 4-5 blocks from Powell's - and they make a great cup of coffee, it feels very European, reminds me of the old Torrefazione's in Seattle. They serve it in a real cup with a little bite of chocolate - yummmm.

I can highly recommend it.

Hi all! So I talked with Mark and here is the schedule so far:

11:30 Pete's Coffee
1114 NW Couch St
Portland, OR 97209
(971) 244-0452

12:30 Powell's
NW 11th and Couch
Portland, OR 97209
(503) 228-4651
The Blue and Green rooms are closed due to a remodel but all books have found new homes within the store. During the construction, the Green Room entrance on 10th and Burnside will be closed. Use the Orange Room entrance on NW 11th and Couch.

2:30 Deschutes Brewery
210 NW 11th Ave.
Portland, OR 97209
(503) 296-4906

Mark, I checked and Deschutes does not take reservations, even for large groups such as ours. I could head over a little early and put our names in for a table.

Also, here is the list of attendees so far...(Did I miss anyone or make typos?)

Mark -- msf59
Kim -- berly
Karen -- maggie1944
Pat -- phebj
Lisa -- labfs39

Wow! Nice job setting up that schedule, Kim. It is perfect.

Kim also accommodated me, making things a little earlier for me, because I need to head back to Salem around 4:30ish. It will be my last evening with my sister and her family. I'll be returning to Portland Sunday morning to catch my flight home.

Kim- Is the coffee shop Pete's or Peet's?

Ellen- Thanks for the teaser photos and Go Seahawks!

I have one little itty bitty concern. Since I do not drink alcohol at all since 1983 I hope Deschutes has good food. Regardless, I will be there for the fun, laughter, and camaraderie! Just asking.... Has anyone eaten there? Was it yummy?

My email correspondence with Powell's this morning . . .

I tried!

My initial email

This is completely off the wall and probably not possible but I'm going to ask anyway.

I am a member of the "75 Books" group on LibraryThing

We are having a get together this Saturday and will be coming to Powell's as a group. There are several of us from the local area but a few are coming in from Washington and one member of the group is flying in from Chicago. It's actually his vacation here that prompted the planning of this Meet-up.

There will be about a dozen of us. The crazy thing that prompted this email is that the person from Chicago posted this photo and comment on his thread this morning:

""Wouldn't that be great, if the marquee said: Welcome LTers! Or Welcome
The Mighty 75ers!"

So . . . . I have to ask. Is there any chance of something on the Marquee this Saturday (Feb 1st) welcoming the LibraryThing 75 Books Group?

And the response from Powell's

Hello,

We're so thrilled to hear your LibraryThing group is coming to Powell's!

Our 10th and West Burnside entrance is currently being remodeled and so our marquee is out of commission.

I'm sorry we weren't able to make this happen for you. I hope you have an amazing time in our store!

Best wishes and happy reading,

Emily

Suzi, thanks for trying. That is so cool -- I'm sure they would have done it if it were not for the construction. And I definitely think we should ask at the info desk or something to see if Emily is around while we're shopping. We can say hi. :-)

When I moved from Oregon to Washington, the reintroduction of sales tax to my book buying life required a serious period of mourning. This is why I feel 100% justified when I decide that I'm going to implement Paul C's Thingaversary Squared option during our Powell's excursion. January 20 was my third Thingaversary. I get to buy 16 books. No sales tax. What better excuse?

I'm down with a nasty cold today and I'm planning to stay home from work tomorrow just to be sure I recover in time for Saturday!

Kim, I'm so glad you'll be joining us. It will certainly take two of us to help Mark with his beer.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I emailed with a friend of mine who lives in Portland. He is a BIG TIME beer aficionado so I asked him for recommendations. Here is what he said:

"Oooh! Great question! Most of the more unique places are on the east side and not walking distance. However, there is a nice place definitely walking distance called Baileys Taproom Baileys Taproom, that has all OR beers and lots of off the beaten path stuff. They also just opened this cool spot upstairs in their space called The Upper Lip The Upper Lip, that has a separate set of taps. Both spots can be pretty hopping depending on when you go, so that may be something to keep in mind too.

Also this place literally just opened a couple weeks ago, and I have yet to go, so it may be a good try: https://www.facebook.com/brewstop. It's affiliated with a pub-bike tour company in town.

Pints is hit or miss. They are possibly starting to focus on very "sessionable" (read: drinkable in large quantity) beers like Berliner Weiss.

Finally, the Deschutes pub in PDX has the usual Deschutes lineup, but they also have about 8 special drafts on at all times that are one-off beers just for the pub (some are really unique and good), or a special release. So if the others don't look good, maybe that will appeal to him."
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Based on this, and given that we will be going in the mid-to-late afternoon, I think (like after 2 or 3 hours at Powell's?), I would propose we give Baileys Taproom a try.

I'm also willing to quit obsessing about this and just go to Deschutes as was the original plan.

Despite lack of internet access on regular basis, I am still alive and kicking.

I am spending a good deal of today planning out my trip to Portland, with dogs, and multiple Meet-Ups!

Yay! Also, will need to make a list of books.

What else?

I have your cell number and you have mine, Karen, so we can be in touch. I know the plan is to meet at Peet's Coffee on Couch Street around 11:30.

Oh, you might want to be sure you have your Seahawks gear on. :-)

I need to remember to print my wish list before I leave the office today.

135maggie1944
gen. 31, 2014, 10:06 am

Hi, Ellen.

I own no Seahawks gear but I'll bet I can borrow some from The Niece and her family. I will have to ask.

Thanks for the reminder of where and when for the Kick Off for the Great Portland Meet-Up.

And Yes, I'm keeping my cell phone charged up!

136Berly
gen. 31, 2014, 10:25 am

I also got a recommendation for Bailey's as a place to check out. I will look up their info and we can always call from Powell's to see whether Deschutes or Baileys has more room for us. Course last minute changes may lose some people...We could post it here if everyone has online access from their phones. Thoughts?

137EBT1002
gen. 31, 2014, 10:27 am

That would work for me. I have a smartphone and can post at least short things to LT if needed.

138CarolO
gen. 31, 2014, 11:34 am

Bailey's doesn't appear to do food, at least I see no mention of it on their website.

I would vote for sticking with Deschutes...and then those that want to can go on to Bailey's afterwards.

I'm not a beer drinker so I'm looking more for a late lunch instead of a cold brew.

I am so very bummed with myself. To have a meet-up that close to me (a 2 hour drive) & not have checked the Meet-Up threads & miss it is practically a sin. I can only blame it on my depression.
Looks like you all had a blast. Love reading all about your planning & seeing the photos. I sure would have loved to meet you all. Perhaps another year. I could have even car pooled with those who drove South from Seattle as I would hit I-5 at the Hwy 12 exit to Yakima. I must pay closer attention in the future. Here's my list of books from Powell's:

Fiction

Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen (because I loved the movie)
The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver (LT rec)
Bird Skinner by Alice Greenway (loved her first book--White Ghost Girls)
Plainsong by Kent Haruf (LT rec)
The World Without You by Joshua Henkin (read a recent review somewhere)
An Unnecessary Woman by Rabih Alameddine (read a recent review in the Times, I think)
Ablutions: Notes for a Novel by Patrick deWitt (Powell's rec)

Short Stories/Essays

A Simplified Map of the Real World by Stevan Allred (Powell's rec)
Cheating at Canasta by William Trevor (LT rec)
The Best American Essays 2013 edited by Cheryl Strayed (good plane book)

World War I

To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion 1914-1918 by Adam Hochschild (liked King Leopold's Ghost and want to read about WWI)

Memoir

Truth & Beauty: A Friendship by Ann Patchett (recent LT discussion about Patchett on Donna's thread, I think)

Paris Prep for June trip (all these were impulse purchases; I've never heard of any of them before)

phebj - I have not yet made the dive into the 75ers. I usually just ramble around the talk threads, kind of like how I navigated Powell's. I always hear great things about the 75ers so one of these days I'll make the commitment.

I came home with:
I came, I saw, I lost My Luggage by Peter Biddlecombe
So Many Enemies, So Little Time by Elinor Burkett
Nation by Terry Pratchett
Dodger by Terry Pratchett
The Long Earth and The Long War by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter
Monsieur Pamplemousse and the Militant Midwives and Monsieur Pamplemousse takes the Cure by Michael Bond
Walking Portland by Becky Ohlsen
Barking and The Better Mouse Trap by Tom Holt

And I followed up our great Meet-Up with a great Super Bowl party the next day - Yeah Seahawks!

feb. 10, 2014, 3:31 pm

I'm about 25 miles north of Portland and it has snowed for the past 3 days - I know, all of you on the east coast are calling us wimps - but we are not used to it. We do not salt the roads and we do not have the snowplows to deal with it. The first day we got 7", the 2nd day we got about 3" and the third day we got another 5-6"...now that it is warming up we are waiting for the freezing ran to arrive.

Multiple crashed on I-5 meant that my 20 mile trek home from the veterinarians on Thursday took 4 hours.

I do like the snow, it is just best enjoyed from home when you don't have to drive in it...and with a hot cup of cocoa.

I am sorry, friends in Portland. Seattle has been so lucky this year. We did have a little snow Saturday evening but my mid-day Sunday the roads were nearly clear and I could easily drive to the grocery store. But I know snow in our world is a whole different story: hills, inexperienced drivers, lack of salt on the roads (which is a good thing, I think), lack of plows, and generally much over about 2 inches means everyone who can stays home.

More time to read! As long as the electricity is not down. And as long as you are home with plenty of food, and heat.

Here in Alabama I had the morning off because there might have been bad weather. I slept in and then went to Starbucks for a cappuccino.

Oh dear, I probably won't have finished the books that I just bought by April! I will be in CA for part of April but if I am in town then count me in!

Another meet-up sounds like fun! I have a trip planned in April also, probably either over Easter weekend, or the weekend after.

And I have Booktopia in May. Maybe we should shoot for June?

June sounds good to me.

I can probably make it in June, too.

And if anyone wants to come this direction, I had a wonderful time last year at the Montana Festival of the Book in Missoula. The 2014 dates are October 9-11. Last year featured Sherman Alexie (who was absolutely stupendous), Jamie Ford, Karen Fowler, James Lee Burke and dozens of other authors, panels and workshops.

Let's try talking up a June meeting in Portland. And if we get some responses we can begin to narrow down the days.

How about we look at early June? I have no idea of people's plans (including my own), but we might want to squeeze this in before the end of the school year.

Perhaps I will post something about this over on the Oregonian's group--would that be OK?

I won't be able to do June but if you schedule another meetup later in the year, that might work for me so I will keep checking. I had a fantastic time at the February meetup and would love to do it again.

I am still interested but June is too far out for me to know what's what calendar wise.

I think posting it on the Oregonian's group is good, is it too soon to post it in the meet-ups group?

No, I think posting it wherever is a great idea. Sometimes these things need a little time to build momentum. And the yes, no, and maybes can all change over time, too.

June could work for me. We're not too overbooked yet.

I started a meet-up thread here:
http://www.librarything.com/topic/170100

Does this work or do I have to do something fancy to make a link?

Edited, yup it seems to work without any coding.

Time to bump up this thread? Or shall we start a 2015 discussion instead?

Yes, yes! We need a meet-up!

Check out the new thread for a new year! Come on over and give us some ideas as to when a meet-up might work the best for all....
