Welcome to the group read for the classic children's novel, Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery!

Like many Canadians, I grew up with Anne! Here are some questions to get the discussion going ...

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread?
Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel?
Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island?

I have to share an anecdote with all of you. The first time I vacationed in Prince Edward Island, I had to visit all the Anne-related tourist attractions. My husband and I were amazed by the large number of Japanese tourists. There were busloads, and a number of them politely asked us to take photos of them in front of Green Gables House. I was thrilled to find out that this character, whom I'd thought was known primarily to Canadians, had so many devoted fans on the other side of the world!

This is a many-time reread for me. I loved L. M. Montgomery and read everything of hers I could find in the 70s. I've seen the PBS version on TV, but I've never been to Prince Edward Island.

Since I just re-read Anne of Green Gables last summer, I will not be reading her now, but I will be following this thread. I have read Anne numerous times, having grown up with her as well. I've been to PEI and to Green Gables but it was many years ago. I watched the TV mini-series of Anne that was done in 1985 and starred Megan Follows, who did an excellent job.

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread? Most definitely a re-read. I read everything Montgomery wrote when I was a young adult as well as any articles, etc. that I could find on her and her writings.

Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel? I have watched a few episodes on TV, but they just didn't compare to the books.

Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island? Sadly no. I hope that I can visit PEI and Nova Scotia sometime.

Darn! I forgot I had signed up for this and drew up my February schedule and publicly broadcasted it for the first time this month. It would be a shame to drop one of the "chosen" ones, I will try to somehow fit this one in as the 7th book for the month.

***hanging her head in shame***

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread?
I am embarrassed to say that I am going to be reading this for the first time. I've heard the title but know absolutely nothing about the book or series.
Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel?
nothing
Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island?
never been to Canada, and didn't even know that the book is set in Canada.

I have been trying for the past few years to one by one read the books that have been sitting on my shelves or on my e-readers unread. This book was one that I targeted for 2014.

>7 cyderry:: Don't be embarrassed. There are lots of books on my "should have read a long time ago" list that I won't get to for a good long time. In any case, I'll be interested to hear what you think of Anne of Green Gables, as a first time reader.

Well, I finished it. Very typical of that era.

#7 Cheli, my answers would be identical to yours, except that (thanks to LT) I already knew that the book is set in PEI. I've got it standing by to be read next.

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread?
I read it so many times as a child, but this is my first time reading as an adult. I don't know why I haven't reread in so long. I'm only four chapters in, and memories and emotions are rushing back..I would say this is one of the books that changed how I saw the world..

Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel?
I watched the PBS series when it first came out with my grandmother..during my first semester of college, the girls in my dorm and I would spend weekends re-watching..

Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island?
One day..sigh..

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread? I believe that I read it as a child, but that was so long ago . . .

Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel? No

Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island? Yes, as a teenager (again, a long time ago).

This will be my first time reading it. I've seen bits of the movie/series on PBS. I've never been to PEI, but wouldn't mind visiting.

"Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me glad to be alive-- it's such an interesting world."

Wish more people had this enthusiasm for life.

I'm exactly halfway through the book. What I am noticing most about this re-read is the lush descriptions of the countryside. It leads one to believe that Avonlea must be one of the most beautiful places on earth!

I am completely enjoying my re-read of Anne of Green Gables. I'm probably 2/3 of the way through it -- maybe a little further. It's hard to tell exactly on a Kindle where it is in the entire set of the Anne novels. I could probably drag the paper copy out from the box under the bed, but it was easier to just pull up the Kindle version to read.

I finished last night. It was rather amazing to see how much of the action took place in Anne's chatter to Marilla.

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread? This was my first time.

Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel? I have seen the movie a lot as a kid.

Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island? No, but I would love to visit someday. This is the one "southern" province I have not visited. It seems a very long way from where I live now on the other coast but I would like to get there sometime.

I grew up with my elder sister watching this movie repeatedly. I liked the movie (although not as much as she did) but somehow I never thought I would read the book. Just after Christmas I came across the Puffin hardcover set of 8 classic children's books when all hardcovers were on sale by 30%. The boxed set was already a good deal but the discount pushed me over the edge. I liked the look and feel of the books so much I had to have them. Oddly the first book I picked up was this one and what a treat it was. Not at all the same as the movie, I enjoyed getting to know the characters as they appear in the book and I certainly have developed a soft spot for Marilla. Also some of the language was fun. It is not often you get to read lines like '... gird up their loins for the fray'

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread?

I'm sorry to say, this is a first time read for me. I just started this morning and finding it a heartstring tugging read. It's funny that I never read this book, most of my childhood was spent in the library and at book fairs, it seems as though I should have picked it up or had it recommended to me at some point.

Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel?

No, I haven't seen any of the TV shows. movies or plays based on the novel.

Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island?

No, but I would love to visit someday.

I'm enjoying all the comments from those of you who are first time readers! I expect it's a totally different experience reading the Anne books for the first time as an adult. I finished my reread a few days ago and was pleased to discover that, though I've read Anne of Green Gables so many times before, I can still get totally engrossed in the story.

I never thought I would like Anne of Green Gables. As I child, I thought it was too girly and old-fashioned. But like Anne, I was also a daydreamer and I think I would have found a "kindred spirit" in her. *grins* I'll be reading on in the series.

I finished up my re-read this morning. It was a 5 star book when I read it the first time. It still got 5 stars from me. There's just something "magical" about it.

I really enjoyed Anne of Green Gables! I think that when I was younger I wanted to be so grown up so badly that I thought this book and others would be too "girly" and I gravitated towards more womanly books that made my mother cringe such as Valley of the Dolls,Once is Not Enough and a lot of Harold Robbins lol!

I will read the rest of Anne's adventures at some point, I found the story very heartwarming.

26mathgirl40
feb. 20, 2014, 8:38 am

Eek, I'd read Harold Robbins as a teenager too! I don't recall if it made my mother cringe but it certainly makes me cringe to think of the garbage I'd read as a teen. Actually, I'd read everything as a teen: SFF, classics, Shakespeare, Harlequin Romances, etc. I wasn't discriminating at all and just read everything anyone handed to me or anything with an intriguing cover at the library. Now I have to be more discriminating. :)

Anyhow, I'm glad that we have more Anne fans here!

So am I really the only one here who isn't crazy about this book?

28mathgirl40
feb. 20, 2014, 9:34 am

Well, it's OK to not be crazy about Anne of Green Gables, and I'm sure there are many who feel the same way. :)

I suspect that many of us who love the book are influenced by fond memories of reading it as a child.

>25 lsh63: I read all those books too! lol -- snuck them off my parents' bookshelves. I shudder now to think of it: such dreck!

I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time as a 30-something reader after a girlfriend convinced me to watch the movie. I couldn't believe I had missed it as a child -- I made sure my daughter wasn't similarly deprived.

I started yesterday:

Are you reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time, or is it a reread? I have read parts of it over the years but never the whole book. Loving it so far!

Have you seen any of the TV shows, movies or stage plays based on this novel? I have watched and loved them all.

Have you ever visited Prince Edward Island? Traveled to PEI in 1990 and went to see the play with my then 7 year old. Don' remember much about it but I remember being thrilled to see it in PEI and was excited to see Green Gables also!

31cyderry
feb. 20, 2014, 3:13 pm

No, MarthaJeanne, I wasn't exactly thrilled with it either. Maybe it was because it was set in a period of time that I'm not enamored off or maybe it was because the central characters seemed too one dimensional.

Anne of Green Gables - Lucy Maud Montgomery

My last read for February, this was one more of my LT Group reads - Anne of Green Gables, a children's story, which turned out to be a most delightful read. Set in, from what I hear, the very picturesque Prince Edward Island in Canada, the pride and delight of the author in describing the beauty of the island, through the eyes of little Anne, was very apparent.

And little Anne turned out to be quite a character too! With no one immune or able to resist her enchanting influence, she thrills the otherwise quiet folks at Avonlea. That she charms the reader too, is a foregone conclusion.

The book was just the right length too, and ends with Anne as a 16 year old girl. Apparently there are sequels, but I would likely skip them, for I highly doubt the young woman, Anne, would hold my attention as much as girl Anne did.
