Like Harry Potter

I have a 4th grade student who made this request...she's already read Artemis Fowl, Rick Riordan, Shannon Hale, Gregor the Overlander, Dragon Slippers, A Wrinkle in Time, Eragon, Gregor the Overlander, Sisters Grimm series. Our library is pretty small, and those are all my "go to" books when kids are looking for fantasy like HP. Any more suggestions I may have overlooked? I thought about Charlie Bone, but we only have one and it's not the first in the series.

Diane Duane's Young Wizards books - the first is So You Want to Be a Wizard - are enough like the Potter books in some respects that despite the first one having been written in 1983 she's been accused of ripping off Potter. She just released revised editions, so that the young audience isn't jarred by things like a total lack of cell phones - look for the "New Millennium Editions".

This is an older thread (2008) but it may give you a pretty big wishlist :)

Diana Wynne Jones was writing about boy wizards (and much, much more) long before Harry Potter.

Not like Harry Potter, because there are no ties to the mundane world, but I would encourage your student to move into fantasy written by Jane Yolen and Tamora Pierce.

Madeleine L'Engle wrote much more than A Wrinkle in Time so there is more opportunity there.

My wife Kim has read and enjoyed the Diane Duane books. She also has a related series with cats in that universe.

The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper might be a good choice. Although start her with that book, and not the actual first book in the series.

How about The Golden Compass?

How about the Oksa Pollock series by Anne Plichota? LT recommends the Ruby Red series by Kerstin Gier to go with Oksa Pollock. Or how about the Inkheart trilogy by Cornelia Funke?
