From the "only in America" file!

Has anyone seen this article from the LA Times about “glamping” (glamorous camping, that is)?

Basically, rich people spend upwards of $600 a night to go camping! The price includes a maid, a cook, and a "camp butler" who starts their fire for them!

Even more disturbing, the article states that visits to US national parks are declining while glamping is increasing in popularity. (They've even got people paying ten bucks for a s’more!)

What happened to getting back to nature?

First I went "bwhahaha!" but then I thought it was sad, really:
""We're just not the camping kind of people. We don't pitch tents. We don't cook outdoors. We don't share a bathroom. It's just not going to happen. This is a kid who has never flown anything but first class or stayed anywhere other than a Four Seasons."" (quote from the article)

Poor kid.

RE: "only in America". They'd be hard pressed to find a spot sufficiently remote on the right side of the Pond. Over here, the hoi polloi are always just around the next bend! *snerk*

Wow--and I thought the people 'camping' in their $200,000 RV's with AC, satellite TV, and internet had it good.

Interesting article--thanks. Paws Up is only a couple hours away from here--but I hadn't realized how cushy it was.

There's another such resort with cabins a couple hours south of here.

Wow. $600/night. I'm in the wrong business!

Does anyone remember the film "Meatballs" with Bill Murray where he played a counselor at a less than average (to say the least) summer camp which had as a neighbor a "rich kids" camp? Remember the scene where the kids were getting into their buses with waiters circulating among the rich kids with trays of hors d'oeuvres?
