I have only read The Secret River by Kate Grenville and The Night Watch by Sarah Waters. So far Grenville is winning. Carry Me Down by M.J. Hyland is also on the shortlist so the Australian contingent is lokking good. Has anyone read any of the others?

I was amazed that Sarah Waters was the bookies' favourite as her The Night Watch I found very disappointing compared to her earlier novels, especially Fingersmith which was compelling. I'd half read the long-listed Kalooki Nights but the style exhausted me. I'll give the Desai a go.

I have given up on The Night Watch for the time being. I loved all her earlier books, but this one just hasn't grabbed me.

Fingersmith is at the top of my 'really, really want to read' list. I take it you recommend it, hazelk?

Even if hazelk doesn't, I do! I really enjoyed Fingersmith (as well as Tipping the Velvet and Affinity).

Bigglesmith - I can wholeheartedly recommend Fingersmith. Full of twists and turns (and it's erotic when it needs to be). Really good writing.

I'm off on holiday to Cuba in a couple of weeks - I think I'll have to buy it for the plane then!!
