Hi all -- I'd like to learn more about the Paris Commune. Do folks have recommendations for favorite books about it?

I'm not broadly enough read on the topic to have a 'favorite' book about it, but Paris Babylon : the story of the Paris Commune was certainly OK.

So this is a little late, especially compared to AsYouKnow_Bob's immediate response, but anyway...
I believe that one of the standard works is The Paris Commune 1871 by Stewart Edwards. However, I haven't read this book.
I have read The paradise of association : political culture and popular organizations in the Paris Commune of 1871 by Martin Phillip Johnson which I recall as something of a bottom-up history, but it's been so long I can't say much more.
Then there's always Marx in The Civil War in France, and The First International in France by Julian P. W. Archer also has some information on the Commune.

There is a narrative history by Alistair Horne The Fall of Paris: The siege and the commune. It is over 30 years since I read it though.

Avrich's Anarchist portraits has a good essay. I recall also that Revolution & reaction: the Paris Commune, 1871 was a good collection of essays. There is a bibliography, from an anarchist perspective, on the Anarchy archives site: http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/anarchist_archives/pariscommune/pariscommunebiblio.ht...

Just listening to a talk on the Commune by John Merriman at Mt. Holyoke; he wrote The Dynamite Club in 2006 about a son whose father was in the Commune, and is writing another book about anarchists with connections to the Paris Commune.

I read a book many years ago on the Paris Commune by someone named Jellinek.
In it he claimed that there were Irishmen among the Communards. I've never found anything more on this subject. Does anyone have any information?
