I ran into a note about A New Atlantis by Francis Bacon; it said that Bacon predicted all sorts of scientific developments. And I love Baroque scientific literature so I took it out of the library.

It was a big disappointment. It was published posthumously, and I think maybe he hadn't finished it. Most of the book was just a simple itemization of predictions, without any exposition. And I just don't like Bacon's style as much as Robert Hooke's or John Wilkins's or Thomas Hobbes's, or (my favorite) Thomas Browne's.

My reading was also hindered by the copy of the book I had: several pages in the middle were missing. Not Bacon's fault. Oh, well!

I'm reading something else by him now just to make sure, but so far my review is thumbs-down. I know it seems like a silly complaint, but I think he's too wordy. When Hobbes writes a page-long sentence, every word counts. But Bacon just seems to blather a lot.

Does anyone else have any opinions about Bacon?
