Do you have questions about how groups work here on LibraryThing? Ask here.

gen. 16, 2016, 2:35pm

I'll start with a couple of tips:

To show how a message is in reply to something else...

type in > then the number of the post you are replying to. LT will add in the name of the person and a link to their post.

gen. 16, 2016, 2:36pm

To link to a book you might want to review, it's called a "touchstone". If you look to the right of the box you are currently typing in, it describes it right there! (And now that I'm looking closer, I finally see how to link to the author, as well! I've seen people do it, but never investigated as to how they did it!

So, here's an example:
All the Light We Cannot See

Just be sure to double check (underneath "touchstone" to the right) that the correct author comes up. If there are common words in the title, it might pull up a different book automatically. You can change that by clicking "others" and clicking the green plus to select the correct one.

gen. 16, 2016, 2:36pm

There are a number of different ways you can come in to check your groups/posts/threads.

You can click on the "Groups" tab at the top, then from the left menu, click "your groups". Then click on the group(s) you want to look at as a whole.

OR, you can click on the "Talk" tab. The left menu gives you different options for what you want to show up there. You can toggle it. If you leave and come back, it brings you back to the last option you had it on. Most often, I keep it on "my posts" and it only lists all the threads I've posted to. You can easily see which ones have new posts.

Editat: gen. 16, 2016, 2:40pm

And if anyone wants to add an image to a post, see post #3 here:

Since this is a post, not an entire page I want to save, I don't have this added to Notes (but maybe I should investigate is I can still add a link to just the post?).

What I have done to easily find this post is to "star" it. Under the post, you'll see "more". Click that and you have a few options. Hmmm, it's been a while since I've done this. Did I "Add to Favorites"? Yes, yes I did.

Once you've added it to "Favorites", you can find it later by clicking on "Talk" in the brown banner at the top of the page. Then, look at the menu on the left and you can click on "Starred". That brings up any posts you have marked as a "favorite".

You can also "star" an entire thread by clicking "Star this topic" at the top of the thread.

Editat: gen. 16, 2016, 2:48pm

>5 LibraryCin: under that 'more' link it also says 'link'. If you click on that the link for that post shows up in your browser's URL field. takes you straight to the post about pictures. BTW, make sure you have the link to the image, not the page the image is on. It will probably end in .jpg or some other file code. If it doesn't you get a nice little box, not a picture.

gen. 16, 2016, 2:51pm

>6 MarthaJeanne: Thank you so much for that added info!

And for stopping in to help out us "refugee" shelfarians! (Ok, I've been here a while, but many are just starting out!)

gen. 16, 2016, 5:05pm

>1 LibraryCin: Cin, do you know how to batch edit? All my books dumped into the my library collection and didn't retain their read, currently reading, tbr status. I want to fix that but I don't have the time to do it one by one.

gen. 16, 2016, 5:09pm

>8 Mootastic1: Batch editing is done via power edit mode, the little lightning bolt icon in Your books (click it again to exit).

gen. 16, 2016, 5:15pm

>9 .Monkey.: Thank you for jumping in, Monkey! Sara, that is something I didn't know how to do.

Good luck getting everything up to speed. This is my favourite site after shelfari. :-)

Though it is big and there is lots going on and it is confusing for a while. And you do have to get used to the non-nested discussion threads - which I know is a big thing. But there are lots of great people over here. I find the community is much more similar to how it was at shelfari - smaller, closer-knit.

gen. 16, 2016, 5:33pm

>3 LibraryCin:
Okay ... I'm trying to figure out this Touchstones business ...

Do I have to type the brackets, because I'm not seeing a link to click ...

All the Light We Cannot See

Okay, I typed it with the brackets and the TOUCHSTONES area at the right brought up the book .... now will it post the link here in my message?

Hitting "Post Message" now and we'll see ...

gen. 16, 2016, 6:00pm

No problem. I generally have Talk on "all topics" (with groups/posts I have less than zero interest in ignored, so it's not so hectic), so I generally notice stuff, chime in where useful. ;)

gen. 16, 2016, 6:30pm

>11 BookConcierge: You got it! :-)

gen. 16, 2016, 6:33pm

>12 .Monkey.: Wow! That seems "busy" to me!

Did I mention my preference already? I usually just have it on "my posts" so that I only see the threads that I have replied to in the past. Then, I make an effort to go check out any new threads in each of my groups every so often.

However, I'm considering going in via the Group page and trying that out for a while, so I don't have to make that "extra" effort to check and I would keep more up to date, as well. It's what I always did on shelfari, anyway (although over there, we did get that "unread messages" notification on the group page, so I knew with groups not to bother checking in on!).

gen. 16, 2016, 6:51pm

>14 LibraryCin: I do the same as >12 .Monkey.: now, but in the beginning I used Groups and Posts. And now and again visited All Posts or Hot posts. It's a good idea to watch 'New Features' and 'Talk about LT' (and maybe Bug Collectors) to know what's going on. It took a long time before I had enough groups and topics ignored to make All Topics workable. Right now I am ignoring several challenge topics a day.

Editat: gen. 16, 2016, 7:50pm

>9 .Monkey.: Monkey, Thank you! I will give that a try to see if it makes fixing my books easier.

gen. 16, 2016, 8:29pm

>15 MarthaJeanne: Thank you for those suggestions. I will take a look and hopefully others will do so, as well!

gen. 17, 2016, 5:03am

>15 MarthaJeanne: Yeah, initially I bounced around a bit, mostly staying on "groups and posts," but then I got more settled in and wanted to be aware of what else was going on. :P

>14 LibraryCin: Like MJ said, annual groups that I don't participate in generally get ignored, plus things I have negative interest in, like the "Hogwarts" one, and such. Initially I had Pro & Con ignored but then I decided to let it stay, some threads there can be interesting (though I wind up clicking ignore on a bunch of them). Over time you just weed out the things you know you don't want to see. :)

gen. 17, 2016, 5:08am

Some of the challenge groups have quite good book discussions, so I don't ignore the group, just the individual topics. Right now peole are setting up their topics for the year.

gen. 17, 2016, 5:47am

Welllll, there's bad blood between me and the CC group, so that one is ignored on principle, heh, and personally the 75ers seem very...cliqueish to me, so I don't really care to sit in on their discussions either. ROOT is a very nice group, but there's too many threads, and due to its own-shelves focus, it's not one that has group reads or things like that. CR isn't a challenge, and I'm a happy member of it, haha, so obviously I don't ignore that. xP I can't think of any other big annual ones. The "fat books" has very few people and I, personally, dislike small groups making a new group every year, it's redundant and obnoxious, so I always ignore those sort (...perhaps I'm a bit LT-group snooty? lmao). I've left the relatively smaller 100 Books group be, mainly because I've been toying with the notion of joining, but holding back because it seems unattainable (I have yet to reach that goal, dangit! But there's always a first time... hahaha), so for now it just sits there, taunting me to join. xP Meanwhile I did ignore the 50 Books one...

gen. 17, 2016, 11:00am

Not group related, but another how to question, can you copy and paste your review here? I know how to add a review, but can't use the control v functiin for pasting as I am on a tablet, but when I try to paste it in via selecting my cursor, it won't let me...similar to Leafmarks.

gen. 17, 2016, 11:19am

I'm not a tablet user, so I'm no help there. You can certainly copy & paste things, but I know tablets, being touchscreen devices and not mice, have their quirks that can make things difficult. Someone else who uses one would be best to help answer that. You can ask in the Talk About LibraryThing group for more eyes, someone who'd see the post over there ought to be able to help with that.

Editat: gen. 17, 2016, 11:38am

I know of three places you can enter your review. It should work, but if you are having trouble one place, maybe try another.

1) I don't use the catalogue page for editing, but I know that gives problems on at least some touchscreens.

2) The reviews page.

3) The edit book page.

Just tested 2 and 3 with my iPad, and they both worked.

gen. 17, 2016, 12:08pm

I looked up on google and it said there is an icon to delete duplicats of books but I can't find it. Has anyone else seen it?

Editat: gen. 17, 2016, 12:16pm

An icon? No. But if you go on your profile under your Stats/memes you can see the list of your work dupes. In your case, that is here: It looks like possibly you imported a portion twice? Quite a lot of dupes there.

gen. 17, 2016, 1:09pm

>18 .Monkey.: Thanks, again! I'm only replying to you at the moment without having read the rest of the replies. I took a look at the "Talk" page again. Just to confirm, if I wanted to weed out/ignore things, such as you have, I would just click the X to the right of each thread I wanted to ignore? Thanks!

gen. 17, 2016, 1:09pm

>19 MarthaJeanne: Is there a way to ignore entire groups?

gen. 17, 2016, 1:10pm

>21 Mootastic1: I use my PC for that, and it works there, so I'm unable to say via tablet. I would think there would be some way to do it...

gen. 17, 2016, 1:16pm

I'm not sure how everyone is following along, but I am posting a new thread for "My books/reviews" type questions.

I might copy/paste a few of the questions and answers from here over there - is everyone ok with that before I go ahead and do it?

I also have a thread for "My profile" guestions:

gen. 17, 2016, 1:22pm

>27 LibraryCin:

Yes, there is. Go to the Group's main page, and on the right-hand side you should find a box that includes a link to "Ignore this group". Click on that.

gen. 17, 2016, 2:04pm

>30 lilithcat: Thank you so much!

gen. 17, 2016, 3:13pm

I was off eating dinner, I see Lilithcat has handled your question. :)

Folks have already posted publicly, I don't think anyone would object to you collecting responses into a different thread.

gen. 17, 2016, 3:33pm

>32 .Monkey.: Good point! Thank you.

Editat: gen. 18, 2016, 9:55pm

Ok, so I'm testing out this touchstone feature here:

All The Light We Cannot See

It worked! Yippee! That's a cool feature.

gen. 18, 2016, 10:23pm

>34 Melissa_J: It is cool! I agree! :-)

juny 4, 2016, 7:35am

>34 Melissa_J:
Best feature seen so far.

juny 4, 2016, 8:28am

Question 457: I noticed a group had placed a link to the "welcome thread" on the home page. Obviously after the flurry of new members joining (particularly in a currently closed group), the welcome thread will drop off the bottom without the "pin" option. How do I add that thread link?

juny 4, 2016, 8:43am

Just link it in the group description. Is HTML familiar to you?

juny 4, 2016, 8:51am

>38 .Monkey.: No. I need an idiots' guide.

juny 4, 2016, 9:02am

For links, it's just <a href="URL HERE">LINK TEXT</a>
So for instance, to link my profile, I'd type <a href="">Monkey's profile</a> and get Monkey's profile

juny 4, 2016, 9:17am

>40 .Monkey.: Brilliant! I'm so grateful. It took two attempts, but .....

juny 4, 2016, 9:34am

juny 4, 2016, 9:38am

>42 .Monkey.: Please Stand Here for question 458!

juny 4, 2016, 9:39am

Hahaha, always at your service ;P

juny 8, 2016, 1:47am

>1 LibraryCin: how do I join a group? This site is way too difficult to navigate for this old Luddite.

juny 8, 2016, 2:19am

Go to the group page. If you are reading a topic from the group you can do that by clicking on the link at the top of the topic. At the top right are information and links about group membership. This is an open, joinable group, but you don't have to join to participate.

Some groups can't be joined. Book Talk is an example of a group that can't be joined. But you can participate. You can also 'watch' it, which makes the topics show in the lists for your groups.

There are other groups that you have to join if you want to participate in, but you can still see everything. And private groups that you have to be invited to join.

>45 Raspberrymocha: Rasp, good to see you. I'll send an invite for the Trove at once:0) I see your name is spelt wrong!

juny 8, 2016, 10:17am

>45 Raspberrymocha: You made it!!! We missed you!!!

juny 8, 2016, 10:24am

>45 Raspberrymocha: I sent you a friend request and an invite to 3 groups. So glad you made it.

juny 8, 2016, 12:09pm

A silly question: Why does some information go blue and another will be purple?

juny 8, 2016, 12:11pm

>50 .cris: Are you talking about links? If you've not clicked them, they're (usually) blue, if you have, they turn a different color. The specifics are browser-dependent (as well as if you've changed the settings in said browser).

juny 8, 2016, 1:34pm

>51 .Monkey.: That makes sense! Thanks a lot.

juny 8, 2016, 2:12pm

>45 Raspberrymocha: Hi Rapberrymocha, great to see you here. :) I have sent you a friends request, and would have sent you an invite to the Mystery and Suspense Groups, but I think Carol may have already done it.

juny 8, 2016, 3:42pm

Just stopped in, great to see some of you from Shelfari. I sure miss the camaraderie and ease of communication but guess I need to quit crying. Glad to see some familiar names.

juny 8, 2016, 3:56pm

>54 Kristelh: Hi Kristel. Nice to see you, we're back! 😊

juny 8, 2016, 9:24pm

>45 Raspberrymocha: It looks like MarthaJeanne has answered your question and a number of others have sent invitations to you to join groups. Hope that all helps!

juny 9, 2016, 9:32am

Anyone know what happens to a group when you want,as admin,to delete it? Does it complety disappear,or is it like the topics, hangs around even when you dont want it? Dont understand why that topics thing was allowed to continue.

juny 9, 2016, 9:55am

If you delete a group everything in it is deleted.

juny 9, 2016, 10:27am

>53 Andrew-theQM: I sent Rasp invites to both M&S groups.

juny 9, 2016, 11:32am

>58 .Monkey.: Thanks Monkey, good to know. I have a sort of catchall group at the moment where I am dumping all sorts of things from LM,all higgledy piggledy, but eventually it will all be allocated to proper places and the group will be deleted.

juny 9, 2016, 1:43pm

>59 Carol420: Thanks Carol, I also sent an invite to Read it, Track it 2016
