RIP Lois Duncan, 1934-2016. I just heard about her yesterday (she died June 15th).

If you read creepy books meant for teenagers in the 70s and 80s (and you were a girl, probably), you remember Lois Duncan. She wrote some amazing things. Even non-readers might recognize the title I know What You Did Last Summer which got turned into a movie much later.

I still own my hardcover versions (purchased later as an adult) of teenage year favorites Down a Dark Hall, Stranger with My Face, and A Gift of Magic. I thought these three in particular were a cut above what other YA horror authors were doing.

If I recall correctly, she was fairly embarrassed by the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. They managed to turn it into a pretty formulaic slasher film.

Several of the articles mentioned how surprised she was when she watched that movie, as they certainly changed it a lot. And evidently Teaching Mrs. Tingle was loosely based on Killing Mr. Griffin? I never saw that one though.

I, too, thought her writing was a cut above similar books. Creepy and almost plausible, instead of over-the-top and gory.
