There is an interesting article that was written some years ago which provides the background to the coup, and demonstrates (to my satisfaction at least) that it was motivated not by some sort of intra-imperialist solidarity or desire on the part of the Americans to be nice to the British, but rather by the fear that the erratic, unstable Mossadeq would end up delivering Iran into the hands of the Soviet Union, via the Tudeh Party.
