Don Quixote - Decaris

During the early 1950's, Albert Decaris illustrated Don Quixote for Les Bibliophiles Franco-Suisses. The edition consisted of 135 numbered copies and 22 suites of the engravings on Auvergne handmade paper (for volumes III and IV there were 25 suites printed). I have been fortunate to acquire set number 64. The first two volumes were printed for Albert Malle, while the last two were printed for Pierre Malle, presumably his son. The first two volumes have been bound in leather and parchment, while the two last are still unbound.

My copy is complete with suites of all the engravings as well as several original pencil drawings by Albert Decaris. All three dinner menus with special copper engravings are also present.

Volumes one and two were printed in 1951, and as can be seen, the society decided at the meeting in 1952 to go on and publish part two (vol. III & IV). They were published in 1954 and 1955.

Even though 135 copies were printed, there are fewer complete sets that have survived. Museo Gulbenkian, for example, writes that Calouste Gulbenkian received volumes one and two only before he left the society, and I have seen that one copy of volume III is for sale.

This is how Albert Decaris illustrated Don Quixote:

Yes! I'm glad I saw it five years later, >1 tnemhcrap:.
I'm astounded how the illustrations seem to overflow the pages.
