I have about eight special bookmarks received as gifts over the years. I always try to find some connection between the bookmark and the book I'm reading.
Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries get my peacock bookmark in honor of his dressing gown.
Murder mysteries in general get my startled mouse bookmark.
I have a leather bookmark for cowboy/western or international pioneer books (It's from Peru).
In my Abigail Adams biography I'm using a hand knotted bookmark, because maybe she did tatting or some such craft.
Their Finest Hour has a stained glass replica bookmark, well, there are cathedrals in England, right? I did say I had to "find" a connection.
I also have a piece of paisley fabric from the 70's which I use for my Discworld reads.

Aside from that, I'll use anything to hand. :)

I hold on to the paper bookmarks I get from some stores until they're too old and ratty to use. But I don't use specific bookmarks for anything in particular.

I just make a mental note of the page(s) I read last. Sometimes, I have a couple of books going at a time. I still know the page number I was reading of a book that, 6 months ago, I decided to postpone reading.

I positively refuse to believe that.

It is true whether you believe it or not.
I've just got it easy when it comes to numbers.

Oh, I believe it. My husband and daughter are the same. They also know how to spell almost everything. I could never do that WHL, not even for 10 minutes, but my bookmarks make me happy because of the memories associated with them, so I don't mind.
Are you a good speller too?

I have a collection of all sorts of bookmarks kept in a drawer. When I start a new book, I dip in and choose one randomly.

I try to keep bookmarks scattered around the house, because I'm likely to move around while I'm reading - for example, I'll start reading in my bedroom, and carry the book downstairs with me, and then look for a bookmark downstairs. It doesn't particularly matter to me which bookmark I use for which book; any scrap of paper will do.

I agree WholeHouse and Mrs. Lee, I too memorize my page numbers! One thing I never do is crease my pages to mark my spot, it feels a bit like desecration of a holy object!

Of course, the one exception are those fancy bound novels with the attached ribbon...one cannot just ignore such a thoughtful inclusion!

I usually finish books in one sitting these days, as I haven't started anything longer than your regular 300-pager mass market paperback in a while, and I read quite quickly. But, when I was younger, I had a deck of cards which was missing a few. I would use a card which seemed to 'work' with the novel - either the number or the suit would make sense to me. I can't think of any specific examples any more, though.

I have a specific place where I keep my bookmarks that way I'll always know where to find them. The thing is I constantly take them, leave them in different places around the house, and then put them back when I find them again, so I can't really say how many I actually have. My guess is around 10 or so. The one I'm using now I believe I picked up at ConBust this past spring and advertises an online vampire manga. It looks cute, I may have to check it out.
