I think it really depends on what genre of books you are after. I mainly look for historical fiction and non-fiction
The ones I like atm:
Gleebooks Glebe
John the Bookman at Parklea Markets
Goulds Books Newtown
Berkelouw Books Paddington
I'd love other recommendations too, especially those in quite out of the way areas were you might not hear about them.

There are two good ones in Randwick: Booked Out at 'The Spot' and Ts Bookshop on Avoca St - they have all genres and will take down a 'wishlist' and contact you if the books you want arrive.
Galaxy bookshop in the city also has a second hand fantasy and science fiction section.
There is another one in Victoria Rd down from Kings Cross station - name evades me at the moment - though I haven't been there for ages so it may have closed. I will try to find out...

Haven't been to them personally, but I've seen several booklovers on OZtion talk about how good Gould's Books is. I heard that one could spend hours in there, rummaging through all the stock. Hope to visit it one day.

Darling St. Books in Rozelle is one I go to as often as I can, there's always new stuff there and old stuff you could never afford at the time but they linger there, these books, tempting you to buy them next time when you have more money...

Gould's Books is definately for rummaging! There are piles of books on the floor in front of the shelves. It reminds me a bit of that scene in "The Mummy" were the girl knocks all of the bookshelves over.

It's not strictly in Sydney, but just north of Berrima is the giant Berkelouw's Book Barn. It's worth a trip out there at least once. It's literally a whole barn full of second-hand books ranging from cheap second-hand paperbacks to rare and antiquarian hardbacks.

Perhaps we should all meet up at Gould's Books?

I concur about Gould's.
Another really good one is Cornstalk books in Glebe. Can be a bit pricey, but well worth a look.
Also Peter White's Books in George St, at the Central end, next to the Club X!

I found a good one last week: North Sydney Book Exchange in Mount Street.

I think you should allow at least 3 hours for browsing in Goulds - Gleebooks have a second hand store down Glebe Point Road, Glebe as well as their "new book" book shop. Great for browsing also.
I agree Berkelouw's at Berrima is a great day out combining a day in beautiful historic Berrima as well as buying books:-))
#12 amandameale - if you meet at Goulds, there are a number of 2nd hand bookshops along King Street at Camperdown and Newtown.

I recommend all those above! (With the proviso that Gould's freaks me out a bit too much. I keep on imagining what would happen if there was a fire, and then I start hyperventilating... Plus, I don't think it's actually all that reasonably priced. It looks great with all its piles of books - love the idea of it being the library in The Mummy after all the shelves fall down! - but I can usually find a book I want to read much more easily in other bookshops. Without the claustrophobia.)
I'd also recommend Elizabeth's. There's a branch in Newtown (on King St, near, umm, Brown St, I guess), and one in the city (on Pitt St). Both are well stocked, reasonably priced, and nicely staffed. And the one in Newtown is open late, so I quite often end up with an impulse buy (or four) on my way home after a cocktail (or two) at Kuletos.
There's also Fine Print on King St (south of Newtown station), which is small but nice.
Lman, I think I know the one you mean on Victoria Road, but my mind's a blank on its name too! Been years since I've been down that area of Sydney.

Peter White's on George St is, unfortunately, no more. Gould's bought some of the stock, not sure what happened to the rest.
I love Gould's, but it's bloody filthy, your hands are black when you come out. I wish they could install a wash basin or something! I usually end up calling into the Marlborough Hotel on the way back down King St and washing my hands in there.

Hi posting as someone who worked at Peter White for ten years (The guy with the beard).
Books on King in Newtown (3 doors up from Kuletos) has a fairly good range/ turnaround, Wayne who runs it will take requests/wishlists. Closes about 11pm
Goulds has incredible range and is gradually being sorted. Closes about 11.30pm
In Glebe I recommend Sappho Books (next to Gleebooks New store) particularly for anyhting music related. Closes about 7pm
Elizabeth's books actually get a lot of remaindered books they bulk buy, often it is availlable cheaper at places like Basement Books near Central Station. Also note thitles like Tintin and Asterix are at their full retail value. The Elizabeth's in the city on Pitt st gets in more actual secondhand books.
Ashwoods on Clarence St is also worth checking out, not a huge range but reasonably priced.
The Kelly's bookstores are new books discounted about 10-15% generally but occaisonly the one on Broadway will have a 50% off all books sale. Closes about 9pm.
Gleebooks secondhand (next to the Different Drummer) on Glebe Pt Rd also has a reasonable range. Closes about 9pm.
Fine Print on King St is also OK.
I also personally find it worthwhile scanning the shelves in Vinnies, and other OP shops, you don't have the sorted range but can often find interesting treasures/obscura reasonably priced.
Hope this helps
