In recent months, have picked up American Battleships : a pictorial history of BB-1 to BB-71, with prototypes Maine & Texas, Midway Magic: an oral history of America's legendary aircraft carrier, Lake Michigan's aircraft carriers, USS Ranger: The Navy's First Flattop from Keel to Mast, 1934-1946, Rising Tide: The Untold Story of the Russian Submarines That Fought the Cold War, and Warship 2007: Volume XXIX. Anyone have other interesting tomes to add to the to-buy list?

most of the stuff I've been getting are used and out of print...seems to happen a lot...born one day to find out I have a backlog of reading several centuries long. That said, Edgar Stanton Maclay and Willis J. Abbot have recently been added. They mostly write early American, and are out of print but ESM's history of American privateers is still out there.

I don't see DANFS in your list. Don't know if it is still available. Got my set from the Go. Printing Office.

You can check it out on the web to see if it would be of interest.

Just bought a copy of The Big E: The Story of the Uss Enterprise by Edward P. Stafford. Should be good.

Just received Naval firepower : battleship guns and gunnery in the Dreadnought Era by Norman Friedman. Should be an excellent read. I always enjoy his paragraphs disguised as photo captions.

"Ark Royal": Sailing into Glory was a rash withdrawl from the library and it just annoyed. Maybe it's a reflection of it being written assuming no prior knowledge but that hasn't stopped me in the past - either way, not one I can really recommend.

Much much better were Destroyer Command, and Aircraft Carriers at War, two cracking reads that genuinely offered something new.

One of my favorites. I read it every few years.

I did acquire Sovereigns of the Sea on eBay AND I actually read it. When Konstam sticks to warships he tells an interesting tale, when I read him like an academic historian I think he falls a bit flat in terms of pulling all his material together. This is unfortunate as putting these ships in political context was part of the task Konstam assigned himself.
