I'm curious what new & delightful music people discovered this year.

I think my two greatest new discoveries this year were Brandi Carlile and her album The Story - a wonderful, heartfelt, sometimes angry, always honest folk/rock/singer/songwriter work - I've actually gotten all my friends hooked on her since I discovered her album; and the collaboration that Robert Plant & Alison Krauss did together - Raising Sand. I bought this one on a whim from iTunes, thinking that those two paired up had to at least be different - and it is, and wonderful, too. I characterized it to someone else as "melodic folk"... if you can make sense of that. It's a completely different sound than I've encountered anywhere else, and I absolutely love it.

As far as new albums from already established artists, I've really been enjoying Galactic's From the Corner to the Block - lots of collaborative work there, including visits from Chali 2na who's a personal fave.

I was a bit disappointed by a couple of other albums. Most especially by the highly-anticipated first new album in a decade from the Greyboy Allstars - What Happened to Television. I thought it was boring & a bit repetitive - it doesn't even touch the genius of West Coast Boogaloo and A Town Called Earth. I also was a bit let down by the new offering from Ozomatli - Don't Mess With the Dragon. They seemed to back off from their funk roots a good bit and slide into what I'd call a more mediocre latin sound.

So what about everyone else? What were your favorite finds this year? Biggest disappointments? Share!

I discovered HUMANWINE who released their absolutely brilliant album "Fighting Naked" this spring. last.fm calls them a cinematic-socio-political-anarcho-cartoonish-folk-circus-punk-alt-rock duo. Most of all, their music is fantastic, involves a slightly Orwellian fantasy world and pirates and is so much to listen to.
And the drummer of my favourite band (The Dresden Dolls) toured with them.

I finally took notice of DeVotchKa, who have been recommended to me for years, via watching Little Miss Sunshine, a beautiful movie I also ignored. Shame on me. But now I know both and it's great! :D It's one of those bands you have to dance and sing to.

And then there's the Kleingeldprinzessin. She writes the best lyrics in the world. In German. I love her.

Let's see...my latest obsession is Clutch. They are a groove/funk/stoner metal band from Maryland. Intelligent lyrics, excellent vocals & superb muscianship. Great hooks, unique sound. Love them. Am ashamed to have missed them for so many years.

Went through an intense Type O Negative phase this spring. Had heard them off & on for years, but they never really clicked for me. Then they did and I went a little nutty for a while. The last two CDs seem to be taking them away from their traditional goth/doom metal vibe & pulling them closer to thrash. Still fun and full of atmosphere though.

Found a local band through lastfm.com called Scissorfight. They're like a combination of Helmet, Clutch, COC and Rob Zombie with a dash of Butthole Surfers. Insane lyrics, scary delivery and a blues-infused groove give their brand of redneck metal a sound that most will just plain fear. Awesomely hilarious and in your face heavy.

That's about it for new binge bands for me this year. There were other discoveries and rediscoveries, but nothing that took over my iPod like these have.

I have to agree with philosojerk regarding Brandi Carlile – The Story and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand. Those would be my two favorites for 2007. Bought the first one based on the title track and was pleasantly surprised by the entire CD. And being a Plant and Krauss fan individually, how could I not investigate this one? What a pairing!

My biggest disappointment would be the Eagles - Long Road Out of Eden. I guess I anticipated too much and it just puts me to sleep.
