The passing of someone who's name was an inspiration to all of us who enjoy the outdoors is a great loss. To be the first anywhere is a magnificent achievement.

RIP and condolences to his relations.

Seconded. I've just finished Annapurna, which has given me far more of an appreciation of what amazing feats these men achieved. It's simply mindboggling and he was a great man.

Truly a great loss . . .

Is Tenzig Norgay still alive?

gen. 21, 2008, 8:37pm

Nope. Died in 1986 of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 71.

BBC pictures of his funeral held today (last night) in NZ.

The Ice axe arch is a nice touch, which I've only seen before at weddings. The cavers equivalent of a muddy boot isn't normally quite so appreciated.
