Here I intend to track my challenges and progress. Releases and new books are tracked in the comment 8 and list of the books (TBR) in the comment number 4.
For 2018 I'm paying attention to:
- IN/OUT ratio. Targert value is 0 :), anything that is less than 1 is good enough. I also would love to stabilize audiobooks situation, need to think the best way to track
- KTM count. 2017 figure is 56, the goal is to surpass 52 (1 book a week average) - ABANDONED, as of May 2018
- Countries distribution. Target is to read authors from different countries, special attention to CIS countries, Germany, Austria. Probably France and Canada as well. I won't be participating in 666 challenge (my last year's figure is 14, with both Asia and Europe covered completely)
- Genres distribution. The goal is to have at the end of the year at least 2 books for every genre I read and at least a couple of genres I usually avoid, ex. poetry, mystery. Also would be nice to continue read middle-grade.
- low rating/DNF situation. In the ideal world all 1- and 2-star reads should be DNFed.

I love to give recommendations. What kind of books do you like?
3Amaryllys
That's a tough question!
Among my favourite reads for the last couple of years are
Under An English Heaven by Robert Radcliffe (fast-paced fiction in WWII setting)
Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes (wonderful fictional account of the war in Vietnam from the Vietnam veteran)
The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains by Neil Gaiman (wonderfully spine-chilling short story by the master of words)
The City & The City by China Miéville (mix of mind-blowing sci-fi and political thriller from the master of new weird)
An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth by Chris Hadfield (part memoir, part motivational book from a canadian astronaut)
Atonement by Ian McEwan (heart-wrecking love story told by unreliable narrator. Also, WWII settings)
and also some fiction in Russian that as far as I know weren't translated, which I love for beautiful language, author's imagination and ability to find interesting in the everyday life.
In general I tend to like sci-fi, paranormal romance, period biographies, esp. war-related memoirs, non-fiction on language, contemporary fiction, chick-lit, LGBT, middle-grade and young adult (esp. if paranormal)
The genres I'm not very fond of are historical fiction and cozy mysteries.
I'm particularly interested in recent books by German authors since I'm learning German.
ETA: and I also love manga and comics

BTW, I've already found a book I'd like to include in my 2018 challenge (and preferably finish before the end of March!). I was tagged by it in December and just got my hands on the copy
I set my goodreads goal to 40 books. Some of them will be new, some, hopefully, will come from this list.

Your reading taste is pretty different than mine, but let me try these genres for suggestions:
Contemporary fiction:
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid
Still Alice by Lisa Genova
LGBT:
The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff
Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima
As Nature Made Him by John Colapinto
War related memoirs:
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah
Night by Elie Wiesel
Hope you like some of these!
I like manga, too, although I'm probably the oldest manga reader ever. My favorite series is Yotsuba!. I have an older son who is right now aboard a plane en route to vacation in Japan. He will be attending Komiket while there. :)

Hi Lamilla :-) Welcome to LT and to this group! Lovely to see you here as well and to read about your plans for next year.

>7 Amaryllys: Do give Still Alice a try. It’s a novel about early onset Alzheimer’s, but it’s one of those pieces of fiction that seems all too real. It’s a sad story but a great read.

I just realized that, since you're immediately ahead of me in the 2017 Favourite Books Roundabout, I'll have to be careful in tracking my reading here. I'll make sure I keep the title of my current roundabout book hidden until you've received it. :)

I'd like to track how many books I sent out vs acquire
ETA: Found another one I definitely would love to read in 2018:
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/14514273/
I own a copy - a real door-stopper ))
ETA2: and another one I'd like to give a try:
Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/14557055/
I loved Station Eleven, will see if this one will do it for me.
My edition is not that great though, looks like print on demand to be honest.

I also would like to track countries and/or languages of the books I read. Most likely I won't join 666 challenge this year (last year I aced Asia (yay!) and of course completed Europe, but that just about it).
18mathgirl40
>16 Amaryllys: I'm reading Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell right now, for a book club. It is indeed quite the door-stopper, but I'm enjoying it so far.
19PokPok
I'd love to hear what you think about Jonathan Strange. I ultimately gave it up... after a few tries. Yet... it always nags me. It's a book I wish I could have liked, and might have been "right book at the wrong time".
20mathgirl40
>19 PokPok: I've finished less than 20% of it, but I'll let you know when I'm through more of it. It helps to have a book-club commitment as motivation to read. :)
21Amaryllys
I'll also be reading The Invisible Library which I tagged rodespringbal with %) and Behind her eyes which I'm sending as a ray.
I've added additional section for tags/RR

>16 Amaryllys: Your first addition, Jonathan Strange... was a book I started and did not like. I'm not sure I finished it at all. Wish you a better reading experience than I had with this.
23BoekenTrol71
>19 PokPok: I didn't finish it either (or so I think). Still thinking about giving it a try in Dutch, if there's a translation. Sometimes English (or any foreign language) appears to be the cause for not fully understanding or missing crucial parts of a book. Despite the fact that I read in English & German a lot and a bit less in my other languages.
24Amaryllys

I need one more book to close on my goodreads goal. I might be able to finish The Invisible Library before the end of 2017.

My statistics from the previous year:
total 36 books read (finished my GR challenge, hurray!), 19 of them in English, 4 in German. Liked (4 or 5 stars) about a third of them.
Main genres read are sci-fi (8), fantasy (6), contemporary (5). Out of comfort zone reading - poetry (1), short stories (2), mystery/thrillers (2)
Main settings (for non-fantasy/outer space books): UK (9), Russia (5), rest of Europe (5), North America (14). Rare countries setting - Israel (1), Uzbekistan (1), Armenia (1)
Favourite authors (one of the goals of the year) count: Ishiguro (2), Picoult (1), Mieville (1), Gaiman (1)

29mathgirl40
>28 Amaryllys: Never Let Me Go is my favourite Ishiguro. For Mieville, it's The City and the City but Embassytown is a close second. I loved Gaiman's Sandman series, though I also have fond memories of The Graveyard Book because I listened to that on a long road trip with my daughters when they were young and the whole family loved it.
I agree with your comment in post 3 that The City and the City is mind-blowing. I was fortunate enough to see Mieville and Cory Doctorow together in conversation a few years ago at a book event.

I'm playing with the idea to track the year the book was fist published. For example: new release (2018), recent (2015-2017), 2000-2014, XX century, XIX century, earlier.
Anyone done this? What's your experience/advice?

I have a feeling Behind Her Eyes will be a 2 stars read - so I should DNF it now instead of suffering through the rest. Then I can mail it to Icila this week :D
36Amaryllys
My first incoming book of the year Pop Goes the Weasel by Albert Jack | http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/14500764/
I ordered it on BWB along with one other book in the beginning of December.
I also sent away first three books - 1 for wishlist tag, 1 as a RABCK and 1 book and 1 audiobook for the birthday group.
ration is 1/3 now, which is also good.
I've decided to continue with Behind her eyes for one more day, and then either finish and send away or dnf and send away
I'm unsure how I should classify Москва: место встречи. It's a collection of short stories by different authors set in Moscow in different time periods. Some of the authors I never heard of, some are big names like Людмила Улицкая. Btw, LOVED the illustrations. Now I'm thinking of getting another book of the series, В Питере жить. Also a collection of short stories, but set in Saint-Petersburg

I DNFed the Night Circus. If I'm not drawn to the story after 200 pages...

>37 Amaryllys: Well, 200 pages is a good attempt. Now that I've passed 50, I'm seriously thinking of following Nancy Pearl's "Rule of 50" more strictly.

two more books at the post: Alone in the classroom which I ordered through BWB in the beginning of December and a VBB book by Agatha Christie which were kindly sent by Bookworm-lady
40Amaryllys
I've sent two more books out and received one (my own order from BWB)
My reading progress:
Altes Land - slowly by steadily going through it. Москва: место встречи - only read one short story, by Ulitskaya so far. Artemis - seems to be your usual sci-fi, I'm about a quarter through. Tomorrow, When the War Began - have just started. Looks very intriguing so far.
audiobooks:
Murder on the Home Front - have just started.
Browsed through The Colditz Story a little. Seems to be not my kind of read. Will see if I try it nevertheless or pass on unread.
Listened to some reviews on Liebe ist was für Idioten which I've finished recently. A lot of five star ratings, which surprises me a great deal
ETA: got another book in the mail, Send in the Idiots. Turned out a bit different than I expected. Tagged rodespringbal with it.
ETA2: decided to sent a replacement for the HGG parcel that went MIA. Also, sent a tag book to rodespringbal and one book a month book to the lucky winner mcsar.
With this iN/OUT ratio for January become 0.5 which is good, or in absolute terms -6, which is perfect
Read a bit of The Colditz Story yesterday - will try to continue with it.
ETA3: bookish sweeps I'm participating in January/February:
1. T&M sweeps round 34
2. CLASSICS SWEEPSTAKES - FIRST ROUND IN 2018
3. Favourite book of 2017 sweepstakes
4. International Colour Sweeptakes - 6th Round
5. 2018 Australian Literature Sweepstakes
6. Movie Sweepstakes - Round 6
So potentially 6 books out in the near future
ETA4: I have a good progress on Artemis. Possibly finish it today, hurray. Only two people have it on their wishlist, both active and, unfortunately, outside Europe

Yess! Finished Artemis today (btw, does anybody know how to change the link to the correct book. Right now LT thinks I'm talking about Artemis Fowles, which is completely different story). Another 4-stars read (could've being 5, if not for the bland first half of the book)

>42 SqueakyChu: I presume you haven't finished it either? :D
Meanwhile I finished Tomorrow, When the War Began, which turned out to be a major disappointment since I went into it with wrong expectation (with synopsis like 'dystopia' and 'invasion' one can assume there would be some sci-fi in it, right? right? - Nope.) I really liked the writing style and how real teens were portrayed in that, though
I'm also quite deep into listening Murder on the Home Front, guess this one will be the one finished next

Then choose from the list that appears. I presume this Artemis is the one you're talking about. I've been thinking of reading this one myself, as I'd really enjoyed The Martian.

3 new books today - one wishlist tag in the mail and 2 more are the result of me having no will for NOT visiting a bookstore.
I haven't touched Москва: место встречи and Дар огня for a while, so I'm removing them from Currently Reading! Added Rivers of London that I started yesterday. Loving it so far! I don't have a second book, but I do have a third. Wonder if one can read them out of order. Anyone tried this series?

48SqueakyChu
>47 Amaryllys: Yeah. Books just tend to jump off shelves and into your arms in bookstores. :)
49gypsysmom
>47 Amaryllys: I wouldn't read the Rivers of London series out of order. One builds up to the next and there are many developments in each book. I think you will have to find #2 before you touch #3. On the plus side they are totally worth it. I've caught up to Aaronovitch's output in this series and impatiently waiting for another.
50Amaryllys
>49 gypsysmom: I guess I need to start looking for a trade - wouldn't want to put №3 away for long!
By the way, the January readathon starts in a couple of hours. I'm aiming for double digits, hope audiobooks will give me the needed boost :)

>50 Amaryllys: I would offer to trade but the copies I read were loans from my sister although I was the one who bought the first few for her. My local mystery bookstore had reviewed them just prior to Christmas one year and when I read the review I knew my sister would love them. And then when she finished reading them I snapped them up to read myself and was hooked.

>47 Amaryllys: I've read the first three Rivers of London books and really liked them. I agree with >49 gypsysmom: that it's best to read #2 before #3 to avoid spoilers.

Finished two books over the weekend - highly enjoyable m/m romance in historical settings and an audiobook military memoir. 5 and 4 stars respectively! Also, arranged a trade for the Peter Grant series to read them in order. Hopefully will get the second book somewhere in March!
ETA: sent the trade book and two more out! Also got some pretty stamps for my parcels - more baby birds and some ladybirds https://shop.belpost.by/Images/products/fcea40438da74b238ca3244632fea0b2.jpg !

Cool stamps! We call those (the red ones) ladybugs.

I have the same question as >64 SqueakyChu: but I'm guessing they're new books you bought. That's what happens to me on holidays too. :)
66Amaryllys
>65 mathgirl40: yes, you're right ))
I'm back home from another trip. Guess who brought another 5 books home LOL With one book gone I'm barely keeping an overall ratio of in/out below 1!

68Amaryllys
>67 SqueakyChu: Curious, are you? :-) Actually I update the list of in/outs in the corresponding comment!
69SqueakyChu
>68 Amaryllys: Are those the books for March in message #8?
70mathgirl40
>68 Amaryllys: Nice additions to the library. I do hope the two books I've sent you also make the "IN" list before too long!
71Amaryllys
Okay, I sent 6 books over the weekend - mostly sweeps/RRs - and now I'm back on ratio of in/out less than 1. Also, I've won chick-lit and chocolate sweeps, so I need to send the books out before all the winnings arrive here :-)
I also purchases 3 new audiobooks and renewed my membership.
ETA: I finished The Wandering Earth, which I started reading while abroad. Some stories from the anthology definitely stood out, and my general impression in good. I've already sent the book to the next reader (it was my pick for one book a month game for March). Now I need to finally get to The three-body problem from the same author.
I also went through two forgettable reads over the weekend. The first is They both die at the end, which was hyped on booktube. It has a sci-fi premise but in core is an adventure/lukewarm romance with representation, not something I enjoy. The second is a book from RR.

I finished Sleeping giants late at night and ordered continuation Waking Gods straight away. Now I'm continuing reading Peter Grant series - I have books 1-3 thanks to a trade on bc site.
I've also started another memoir, Aprons and Silver Spoons. I chose it since the last thing I've read about the life downstairs left me wanting more. Unfortunately, author decided to start with her childhood, so after an hour and a half of reading I'm none the wiser about the topic at hand...

I sent two books today (RR and debut novel VBB) and received two more, both for the chick-lit sweeps. Post is fast when it doesn't have to...
ETA: Got my NSS partner's name. Maybe will shop for a present over the weekend. Also, received and send some books - keeping in/out ratio below 1 is hard!

>73 Amaryllys: I also received my NSS-partner's name. I am still looking around for a decent book to give.
I have wild released 26 books these past days and sent out 2 by mail. It feels good :-) Only 1 book bought this year, so my ratio is good so far. I intend to keep it that way, because we're seriously decluttering.
When I am reading English books after Bordeaux, I intend to see if I can grant a wish with the book. Or post it in the reading it-want it thread. If both are no-no's then I think I'll have a spot to wild release these as well.

The weather is beautiful today. I took two books with me on the walk and wild released them in the park.

I'm back from the convention. Now to sort what I've got and what was released meanwhile...
78Amaryllys
I think I'll adjust my goals for the next 4 months a little. With my birthday coming in May I think it would be impossible for me to keep my in/out ration below 1 anymore. I will continue counting it, but won't upset if it's above 1 by the end of August.
ETA: Also, I stopped caring about KTM count when selecting the books to read next or to sent. I still count them in the KTM thread.
For May I'm trying to ease up on participation in sweeps and similar stuff and focus on integrating more reading time in my everyday routine

Participating in Dewey's readathon was the best idea ever. I'd love to do it a couple of times a month :) I've finished 2 books thanks to that and tried some newer arrivals, too.
81BoekenTrol71
>78 Amaryllys: Good to read that you're back. It was nice meeting you IRL finally :-), although I would have loved to have more time to talk with you. Who knows... Maybe next year in Mainz? (Hubby alreadyvexplored the brochures that were on the table and it seems there are good/nice hiking trails in the area.)
After Bordeaux I ended up with less books than I left home with. So my count is still below zero, despite that I bought 3 books in total and was given a few presents by some ever so generous BookCrossers.
I had a reading sprint before Bordeaux and now, after I've catalogued all books and edited my books-in-hand for the 1001-list, I'll be reading less frantically as well.
Still trying to read the oldest first and make a dent in the 1001- books, but I'll see where I end.
I won't be too harsh on myself.
Dewey's readthon is quite nice. For me the problem is, that I can't stay awake for 24 hrs straight (when there's no urgent need). I usually participate in the one on BC, every month a self-set hours-of-reading goal in 7 days. When it wouldn't be the last weekend of every month, I would be able to squeeze in some more hours...

I participated in a less hardcode mode! It starts 3 PM my time, so I used the evening to read, then went to sleep, then used hours left to read again - perfect combination, if you ask me. Being home on working Saturday helped as well

I've been doing Dewey's Readathon for years. I don't keep up a blog anymore but now I post updates on Litsy. (I'm kwmg40 there.) Unfortunately, this time around, real-life commitments got in the way and I only managed a few hours. In past years, I've usually done 6-12 hours. I need my regular sleep, so I don't try to go around the clock. Anyhow, I'm glad to hear you had a good readathon day!

Mid-season analytics:
I've finished 17 books, so I'm on track with my goodreads challenge. Also, it's almost a half of 36 books from previous year
Countries distribution:
ex-USSR: only 1 so far (Russia)
Europe: 8
North America: 6
Asia: 1 (China)
Rest: 1 (Australia)
Not the ideal situation (esp. given how many of the books I've read were originally written in English!), but I still managed to visit some rare countries, such as China and Australia
Genres:
it's quite even at the moment, which is good. Sci-fi is leading as usual, not so much fantasy as last year, and I also have already read 3 memoirs which is nice. I also managed to read a thriller, but no poetry or short stories yet (I counted Wandering Earth as sci-fi)
Languages:
I read predominantly in English, would prefer to have more reading in German, same as last year
Stars:
I liked 9 out of 17 books and haven't rated 3 of them yet (the choice is mainly between 3 and 4 stars for those )), so DNFing is working
I haven't read anything by my favourite authors yet - in fact almost all of the books I read are from the new to me authors. I own several books that fit (written by Mieville, Gaiman, Ishiguro, Tan and Picoult) but have a hard time starting any of them at the moment :/

Right now I'm reading what might as well be the best book of the year. Luckily, it is translated - but is is so damn huge! My two other 5-star reads (and the one that I downgraded to 4) won't fit either

May turned out to be a fantastic reading month for me. I've finished 9 books already, 3 of them were 5-stars reads.
90Amaryllys
Finally, a decent read - Ученик дурака by Дана Сидерос (Russia, RU, poetry), 4 stars. Also, first poetry book for this year
91Amaryllys
I've finished a first harry potter book - not marker here as I don't count the re-reads. Starting on the second one. I've ordered an anniversary edition, which comes out at the end of July, so I'll be able to get it somewhere in August, hopefully

HP4 (so much better on the re-read!)

Scythe - an audiobook
to start:
Vicious by V.E. Schwab - own
Shift (second book in Silo trilogy) - own

Another good reading week (and month) for me, hurray.
I'm going to lift tag/sweeps ban, hehe.
I also hope to participate in booktubathon (starting July, 30th). I need to think of the list of books for it. Not sure if I participate in challenges, though - and I'm not on twitter or instagramm, so reading sprints also not an option, it seems

I think I can safely consider September finished.
My IN/OUT ratio is 148/135, which isn't exactly bad, but still more than I want it to be. For September it's 17/18 (and it was even better before I won the manga sweeps) ))
I haven't finished a single book this month, which is a pity - I had high hopes for the audiobook I've started.
for October I plan to participate in Dewey's readathon (which is starting October, 20th). This should in theory advance my reading ))

I am also thinking about the goals for the coming year. I enjoyed tracking countries and in/out books a lot, so I think I will continue with them.
I hope to take a German test late this year, so it is likely that reading in German will be my focus during 2019 as well
I signed up for the birthday group 2019 and I plan to be a part of fav.book of 2018 RR - I have selected my best book of 2018 already (mathgirl40, don't peek if you plan to participate in it again :D ). I own it, so if no surprises it will be ready to travel already in December
I'm thinking about making December a "re-read" month with goal to reread 5 or 6 titles I own and liked. I guess it will depend on me making my goodreads reading goal already in November. I'm on a reading spree, so it might come to pass. I have several audiobook/hardcover pairs that I would love to revisit, such as Silber 3 and Smaragdgruen, both by Kerstin Gier. I read them a couple of years ago - wonder if I'd be able to feel the difference now, when my language skills are more advanced.
ETA: this year I spent more than 500 USD on the postage alone. I'll try to be more conscious with my expenses.
I also hope to pay attention to the year the book was published - I think I might select several categories, such as before WWII, XXI century, XIX century, new releases (2018-2019).

>110 Amaryllys: Good luck with your plans! Speaking of 2019, I will be launching the 2019 BC MTBR group a little later (probably early December), and I hope you and the others will join again.

I quite like the idea of reading the book you got (regardless bought or received) in a certain period - I saw one person aiming for 6 month. I believe for me in 2019 3 month will be more realistic, and I won't need to finish the book, but read at least a couple of chapters and decide if I'd like to continue with the book some time in the future or let it go, instead of sending it on unread

>114 Amaryllys: That sounds like a good plan. I really like Nancy Pearl's Rule of 50, especially now that I've passed the age of 50.

I'm a big believer in the 50 page rule. Most of the time if I'm considering it, then I don't end up finishing the book. But sometimes, including the book I just read, I am very glad I stuck with it...I'll give this one an 8 stars. It just took awhile for me to engage with it.
I do try to give a book 50 pages, but every so often, I throw in the towel at 30 or so.
Though the winner was a book on the Barbary Plague, that I literally could only read 3 pages. The opening line? I never forgot it: Treasure Island was his castle and the San Francisco Bay was his moat. It was a dark and stormy night.
