OMG, Sue Grafton has passed away, the alphabet now ending with Y.

I am sure her estate or agents will find someone to finish/write Z for Zero - it will be a very surprising development if they do not.

But I am said that she passed away - I liked her style a lot. Maybe time to start them from the top and read the whole alphabet again. RIP!

>2 AnnieMod: “She was adamant that her books would never be turned into movies or TV shows,” her daughter wrote, “and in that same vein, she would never allow a ghost writer to write in her name. Because of all of those things, and out of the deep abiding love and respect for our dear sweet Sue, as far as we in the family are concerned, the alphabet now ends at Y.”

P.S: Maybe not the thread to ask in, but for someone who hasn't read much Crime & Mystery (other than some children novels in childhood and Cormoran Strike series recently), will you recommend her books? Or should I start from some other author / series?

Call me cynical but if the estate of Harper Lee decided to publish the second book, I don't trust those "that's it" statements.

Well, the main feature of her books is that they are frozen in time - so they are pre mobile phones and so on. Which gives them the old-fashioned style of the works actually written in the 80s. If that appeals to you, try the first -- you will either like it and continue or not :) They are cleaner than the usual crime novels and Kinsey is an interesting character. :)

As a long-time 'Kinsey' fan I am sorry to hear this news. For new readers to the series I recommend the earlier novels in the series. They are more compact and sharper in tone.

I was devastated when I read the news yesterday. Received Y is for Yesterday for Christmas and commented that there was just one more to go to complete the set. Sadly not.

The family has said that Sue was struggling with finding a plot for Z and that she hadn't started it. Personally I take that statement with a grain of salt - it seems a clever way of stalling further questions about ghost writers etc.
I'd rather the series was left as is than have it completed by a ghost writer.

As for Sue's abilities.... i always enjoyed the books and as I mentioned above, I have all of them. The books were what i would class as fairly light though. Very much easy reading and although Kinsey's character developed across the series, one could never really class the series as being deep or heavy reading.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Vale Sue Grafton

Such sad news...

I also agree that it is better to end with Y than have a ghost writer finish the alphabet. I hate the current trend of other writers taking over characters and series of deceased authors!

RIP.

>2 AnnieMod: I tried reading from A through to P back to back a few years ago. I really wouldn't recommend it there's little continuation between books (occasional house/office/lover etc moves aside) that they all blur into one big stodge, whereas individually they're light easy reading and quite fun.

There aren't that many series that stand up to back to back reading - especially the ones that were published once a year and you read them for a day or two each :)
