Just got a late Christmas present of a box of See's Assorted Dark Chocolates. I'm willing to share.

//thanks for setting the thread up, WHL - I was out at lunch with the friend who gave me the box of See's.//

TPBM loves See's.

5Darth-Heather
gen. 10, 2018, 4:04 pm

Yep! They have wonderful peanut brittle.

TPBM prefers chocolate.

6xorscape
Editat: gen. 10, 2018, 6:48 pm

Oh, yes. And See's is my favorite! Scotchmallows. Dark chocolate covered almonds. Chocolate chocolate chip truffles. Mmmmm.

The person below me prefers a box of mixed chocolates.

Edit: Congratulations to all of us centenarians, so to speak. Not in years but in threads!

7abbottthomas
gen. 11, 2018, 4:04 am

Back in the post-war days of sweet rationing, American friends of my mother would send a large Whitman's Sampler box every Christmas. What a treat!

I was interested to find recently that the boxes are still available and look much the same as I remember.

TPBM has had enough chocolate to last for the next eleven months.

8Tid
gen. 11, 2018, 5:44 am

NO! NEVER! ("My name is Tid and I am a chocoholic").

TPBM sees the name Hershey and wonders what on earth it has to do with chocolate.

9SomeGuyInVirginia
gen. 11, 2018, 9:27 am

Yes, Hershey's is waxy and gross. Ghirardelli's is pretty good.

TPBM eschews store bought sweets and makes their own.

10Darth-Heather
Editat: gen. 11, 2018, 10:05 am

I do. I'm allergic to chocolate, so it's easier to make my own goodies. White chocolate dipped fruit is really easy. Cream cheese truffle balls. Penuche fudge. Marzipan - although I only can make mushroom shapes (you roll a long strip and cut it into pieces for the stems. then roll little balls and flatten them to make the caps. Stick together with a little sugar water, if any are left by then). I don't know how to make the fancy pretty ones they have in the stores.

My town has a great little confectioner shop that makes excellent salt water taffy and caramels. Nelson's Candies

TPBM doesn't like sweets.

11morningwalker
gen. 11, 2018, 10:16 am

I don't really. I'm more of a savory type. Salty, umami kinds of things.

TPBM likes bitter things.

12ulmannc
gen. 11, 2018, 2:14 pm

My tongue says horse radish is not bitter but it certainly does clear one's sinuses when it is fresh.

TPBM will provide an example umami. I'll too lazy to go to Google.

13xorscape
gen. 11, 2018, 4:58 pm

Soy sauce is the probably the most used example. Miso.

The person below me also chooses savory over sweet. (For me, savory first then a little sweet.)

14PhaedraB

Pretzels are gifts from the Gods. Plus, they go great with beer.

TPBM agrees existence of coffee which can be partaken of after a rich sweet is proof that the Gods love us and want us to be happen.

15rolandperkins
Editat: gen. 17, 2018, 1:18 pm

"proof that the GodS love us . . ." (14)
Emphasis added).

I believe in only one God, and I'm undecided whether She proves Her love
by such an existence of coffee. I've found coffee to be, unlike alcohol, perfectly capable of being "cut down on". I now limit myself to two cups of coffee a week, and
sometimes even forget to take the second one.

TPBM has successfully cut down on at least
one of the following:

alcoholic beverages

root beer

coffee.

16CarolO
gen. 12, 2018, 2:33 am

I go cold turkey off of coffee from time to time just to prove to myself that I can.

TPBM will share their favorite cocktail recipe with us.

17Darth-Heather

TPBM has another.

//>12 ulmannc: I learned about umami from a Barenaked Ladies children's song called Food Party. It's a pretty good song if you want to google it.//

TPBM likes the Barenaked Ladies.

20SomeGuyInVirginia

Yes, but I still wouldn't take their seat after they leave the sub'emway.

TPBM is less squeamish.

21abbottthomas

I've never been offered a subway seat by a bare naked lady - but isn't this all getting a bit 'weinstein'?

TPBM always thinks twice before speaking nowadays.

In this town you have to. What happens in Vegas stays an internet meme and can be used against you in a court of law or, worse, one of public opinion.

//I am dying, Egypt. I looked up my symptoms and I either have the flu or radiation sickness. And if this is the flu I can tell you it's a hum dinger.//

I did at the last FoL Board Meeting and ended up abstaining from voting for additional funding. I couldn't in all good conscience vote for a 16% addition to an already bloated budget. If the Librarians are mad at me, they're keeping it well hidden.

TPBM is much more cautious.

Nobody knows where TPBM hides the spare key.

33karenmarie
gen. 17, 2018, 1:47 pm

Not even me. It fell into the monkey grass somewhere when we got the back porch power washed, and we really need to put another one out.

TPBM knows where their spare key is.

34bnielsen
gen. 17, 2018, 2:24 pm

Oh yes, I have lots of spare keys, now if only I knew which locks they can unlock.

TPBM has more than once unlocked something with the wrong key.

352wonderY

TPBM has started a collection of keys that will be worth scads of money some day.

36Jenni_Canuck
gen. 17, 2018, 3:07 pm

Oh? yeah, that's why I have all these keys and no idea what any of them unlock. It's a collection.

TPBM has inadvertently started a collection of ______________

37bnielsen

Tea tins. I'm not really collecting. I just don't throw them out when they're empty :-)

TPBM has a collection of _________________

Keys. I keep thinking they'll help someone with an art project someday.

TPBM has attempted to open the front door with a car key fob.

39WholeHouseLibrary
gen. 17, 2018, 6:56 pm

No, but I used a bicycle tire iron several times.
Back in 1977, my first wife (ThiMs) and I did a bicycle trip from northern NJ to Pensacola, Fla. The original plan was to circumnavigate the contiguous 48, but she decided in Virginia that Florida was the end of the line for her. She caller her brother (at work) before arriving at his house. He said that virtually anything could unlock the front door. He wasn't kidding.

Everything I just stated was as it actually happened. TPBM is not above embellishing a story.

40Tid
gen. 18, 2018, 6:04 am

No, never, and I said the same thing to my husband who is the elf king of Avagardalon as he flew off to gather the Ents for one last strike against the forces of Mordor, who seem to have invaded our neighbourhood, making it very difficult to pop down to the corner shop to get basics such as flour, sugar, eggs and coffee.

However, I WAS at the concert where Chuck Berry's My Ding-A-Ling was recorded, and thus - to my eternal shame - my voice can be heard on a record that was #1 both sides of the Atlantic.

TPBM also has a memorable rock'n'roll experience to tell us (without embellishment, of course!)

41karenmarie
gen. 18, 2018, 8:47 am

True story. When I was 10 years old, I mailed a post card off to KFWB AM radio on a Tuesday to win a ticket to the Beatles concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Imagine my surprise when our neighbor called on Saturday, 4 days after I mailed the post card, when I wasn't listening to the radio to tell me they called my name and I had to call in to win. So I did. I won a ticket, the album Hard Day's Night (which I still have), and 4 Bobbin' Head Beatles Dolls (which I do not have, drat.) My dad let me to go the concert, putting me on a bus, telling the bus driver to watch out for me. I got back on the right bus, safely returned to Dad. Section R, almost nose-bleed seats, but I didn't care. It was THE BEATLES.

TPBM has a memorable rock'n'roll experience of their own. Without embellishment either. *smile*

42morningwalker
gen. 18, 2018, 12:49 pm

Well, I saw Robert Palmer and George Thorogood at a local college. It was pretty up close since it was a small venue. Not that exciting, but memorable to me.

//>32 SomeGuyInVirginia: tee hee.//

TPBM likes opera.

43PhaedraB
Editat: gen. 18, 2018, 12:55 pm

In 1966, at the first concert of their last tour, I saw the Beatles twice in one day, matinee and evening. The night before, my friends and I had been hanging around their hotel (my dad drove us there) and a newspaper photographer snapped a picture. The next morning the picture was on the front page of the newspaper, large and above the fold. John Lennon's apology news conference for "we're more popular than Jesus" was below the fold. Kids in line for the show asked us to autograph their copies.

Also, I once smoked dope with Jimi Hendrix's back up band. They're all dead now. :-(

Leapt! But it's a good one so I'll leave it. I have never seen an opera in person, but have watched the Met on TV. I have an acquaintance in NYC whose goal is to see a thousand operas before he dies. He's in his sixties and upper six hundreds these days.

TPBM's got another one.

44abbottthomas
gen. 18, 2018, 2:58 pm

I'm in my seventies and have just passed 333 operas so I guess Phaedra's friend will beat me. I'll keep trying though.

In the sixties I walked out of a pub in London's Northumberland Avenue after a liquid lunch to be confronted by several dolly-birds who started to scream. They soon gave up and their spokeswoman said, in a puzzled tone "You aren't Georgie Fame, are you?" They were, I think, relieved when I assured them that I wasn't.

TPBM will go on with show-biz related experiences.

45SomeGuyInVirginia
gen. 18, 2018, 3:47 pm

I once had the drummer of the Guess Who become upset with me because I had no idea who he was. He was trying to 'score chicks' and I was trying to catch a cab at a hotel. Both of us were relieved when a cab showed up.

TPBM lived to tell this tale...

TPBM hopes it's going to snow a lot this year.

49PhaedraB

TPBM knows dry seasons.

50WholeHouseLibrary

Sure do! I had a whole pantry shelf full of them: onion flakes, dried parsley, rosemary, chives.
Can't touch any of them. My first wife, ThiMs, would occasionally try to slip them into something I was preparing for dinner.
I had no problem with her using them for herself, but she had a real mean streak in her.

TPBM knows dry reasons.

The year before my motorcycle accident, I worked in the Pattern Shop of a foundry in New Jersey. To clean out the vent holes for sand mold inserts, we use Gumout, which is used primarily to clean automobile carburetors and other engine parts. The most effective/only cleaner/soap in the bathroom was powdered 100% lye. My mode of transportation at that time was the motorcycle. When the weather got cold, the end effect of the Gumout, lye, and sub-freezing temperatures was severe desiccation. Flex my hands, and I'd start bleeding in hundreds of places.

57karenmarie

They're all in a drawer in my husband's home office. Every time something shows up, that's where it goes. He'll pull it all out sometime after the end of January, put it all in a shoe box and then I'll take it to the accountant.

TPBM does their own taxes.

58ulmannc
gen. 22, 2018, 11:18 am

Yes I do . . . (well with help from software) . . . but planning for 2018 is going to be interesting since the IRS hasn't published planning guidance and as long as the gov. is shut down nothing will happen.

The tax accountants haven't figured it out yet.

TBPM will not even think about this until 01 Jan 2019

59morningwalker

Nope, I won't.

TPBM overthinks things.

66karenmarie

I'd have to actually read it first, but I do have a 53-page pamphlet on my shelves titled The Story of Wooden Money by Earl R. O'Cathey, signed by the author and inscribed to my mother.

TPBM is a coin collector.

67SomeGuyInVirginia
gen. 24, 2018, 9:12 am

Only by inheritance. It's in a box, under the bed, next to the box of patterned feed sacks and the box of Case knives, both of which I also inherited. Collectors should never sell their houses unless they're OK with a stuff diaspora.

TPBM is spare.

68abbottthomas
Editat: gen. 24, 2018, 12:00 pm

Checking my Chambers Dictionary for adjectival meanings of 'spare', I am not lean, frugal, scanty or meagre. I might be said to be 'kept or available for others or for such purposes as may occur', I suppose.

To a Scot 'spare' is the opening or slit at the top of a skirt, pair of trousers, etc..

TPBM did not know that.

69Darth-Heather
Editat: gen. 24, 2018, 1:39 pm

I did not, actually. And now I can't figure out exactly if I ever thought about what the opening in bottom clothing was called...

A spare is the bowling pin left standing after the others are knocked down.

TPBM is a strike.

70PhaedraB

There was a time... I wasn't the cinema-goer as much as the movies came to me.
One of the side benefits of my father's job required him to review at least three movies a week. He had that job for over twenty years. When I was five, I could thread a Bell & Howell 1600 35mm movie projector in less than thirty seconds. For the most part, I loved watching the movies, but I recall that "Pollyanna" was one that showed up at least three times a year. Dad also had this thing about protecting his kids from indecency, so during the viewing of "Goldfinger," his hand was over the lens whenever Ursula Andress made an appearance.

We also went to movie theaters on occasion, and a drive-in, but it was just for the experience.

I just looked up the lyrics to Jumpin' Jack Flash. There are two different versions of the second line, "And I howled at the morning driving rain" or "And I howled at my ma in the driving rain."

When I married, my new husband came with a five year old daughter. She would sing Jumpin' Jack Flash. Needless to say, I couldn't understand a word. But very cute.

I always thought that "Bits and Pieces" was "Big Fat Pieces." A friend always thought the carol was "Hark the Hairy Angels Sing."

The person below me will add to the theme.

209Tid
feb. 24, 2018, 9:08 am

Slight variation to the theme. You know all those websites that give the lyrics to songs? There's one line in Blue Mink's "Melting Pot" that seems beyond their intellectual ability to transcribe. These are the two most common versions:

- And be thankful little Mrs. Graceful

- Making Lady Favor

It's actually "Mick and Lady Faithfull"! At the time, Mick Jagger was still involved with Marianne Faithfull. Sigh.

TPBM knows how to correct these howlers.

I have enjoyed the BBC recordings of the Marx Brothers shows from the 1930s, Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel with Michael Roberts and Frank Lazarus playing the Flywheel and Ravelli parts and sounding very much like Groucho and Chico.

Show trivia:
Grouch and Chico shared an income of $6500 a week for the original shows, a high salary in the Depression.
Groucho's lawyer role was originally named Beagle but this was changed to Flywheel (much better, IMHO) after threatened legal action by a New York attorney named Morris Beagle, fed up with phone calls asking for his partner, Shyster.

Enough of that!

Also had to shovel path to get to the newspaper and the driveway so I could get to work. Now my back hurts and I'm tired. I'm weary of winter and long for a sunny beach somewhere. Let's see... first, there was a fellow nicknamed "Leadfoot," on the opposing high school's soccer team ... put my kneecap about six inches higher than it's supposed to be. About six months later, playing center field, I took a line-drive to the knee on the day of the prom. I didn't dance that evening. A year later, the calf and thigh were squeezed apart in an act of (someone else's) stupidity involving two cars. Then there was the motorcycle accident that chewed up and shredded my sciatic nerve ... so, yeah, I know.

My mother, on the hand, at the age of 84 (ten years ago) had a bizarre accident, as a pedestrian, in a parking lot. Someone drove up her leg and came to rest on her thigh. She was still standing. Other than some swelling, no problem.

I used to go cold turkey whenever I was on vacation; always at least two weeks. In 1993, I worked for a place that gave you two weeks the very first day you started, and added a day for every year you worked there. Then every four years, you were given a six-week sabbatical, which if used for community service, could be stretched out to twelve weeks--and you could take it along with your vacation time. In effect, it could be four straight months out of the office. Great place!

The point is, I would go for at least two weeks without coffee, and often much longer, because I didn't feel the need for it. That is, until I learned that caffeine is often the best way to keep migraine headaches at bay. I've suffered from migraines since I was in elementary school, and I didn't make the connection until I was in my late 30s. Except for one major episode about four years ago (on Thanksgiving, and for the next two days), I've kept it under control. I drink eight to ten cups every day, and there's no down side.

I love the Internet - I was able to quickly and easily find out that there will probably be a lockout of over 400,000 state employees in Denmark on April 10th. I'm assuming that you're either a state employee or work for an organization directly affected by the lockout and thus will be home and able to read all day if you wish.

TPBM has participated, willingly or not, in a strike or lockout.

Satellite is for TV; cable is for Internet and email; two different companies. Then there's the cell phones... I'm probably paying several hundred dollars more a month than I need to, but I can't get the time to do the analysis of the pros and cons of consolidating the services. I have emails going back over ten years that I still need to reference.

347> Actually, yes. I played soccer in high school until the opposing team's halfback (nicknamed Leadfoot) relocated my right kneecap to several inches up my thigh.
