A Fantastic Woman. 2017. Oscar nominated Chilean drama. A waitress/nightclub singer's older boyfriend dies suddenly. She just wishes to grieve, but his ex-wife and family go out of their way to ensure all ties are cut. I went in not having read the spoiler on IMDb and found the film so much better for that. I hadn't made up my mind about the situation and thus felt a lot more sympathy for the character. I'm ashamed to say I did have a little prurient desire to get down to the nitty-gritty. An excellent performance from the lead actress. 7/10

American Made (2017)
4 Stars

Who's In It:? Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright

What's It About:? Based on a true story. Barry Seal was just an ordinary pilot who worked for TWA before he was recruited by the CIA in 1978. His work in South America eventually caught the eye of the Medellín Cartel, associated with Pablo Escobar, who needed a man with his skill set. Barry became a drug trafficker, gun smuggler and money launderer. Soon acquiring the title, 'The gringo that always delivers'.

Do We Eat The popcorn OR Throw The Popcorn:? Eat it and hold onto your seats. Tom Cruise did a great job portraying the pilot in an extremely light-hearted and funny way. Cruise is known for playing roles that ooze oodles of dare-devilry...but most of those roles are of fictitious characters. This time Tom plays a real man whose daring knew no bounds. No one would approve of what this man did but I guarantee you will be entertained by it.

Vera Season 7 (2017)
5 stars

Who's In It:? Brenda Blethyn

What's It About:? Vera Stanhope is the police detective from the mystery series inspired by the novels of Ann Cleeves. Against the stunning backdrop of rural Northumberland, Vera and her assistant, Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty, Stella, Black Work), strive to solve vicious crimes that menace their community. We find Vera and Aiden investigating several mysterious deaths, including a park ranger found washed up on the shores of a remote wildlife reserve, a drug addict, a promising young journalism student, and a woman who had disappeared six weeks earlier. Despite her unconventional ways and abrasive personality, Vera continues to captivate in this long-running British mystery.

Do We Eat The popcorn OR Throw The Popcorn:? Get yourself a GIANT TUB and sit back and immerse yourself in one of the best mystery series going! I love Brenda Blethyn in this role. She is the Vera from the books personified. Ann Cleeves is not kind to her character in the books but on the screen you have to love her. I own seasons 1-7 and am looking forward to owing season 8 yet this year. Our British friends excel in doing mysteries right.

Atomic Blonde
3/5 stars
Cold War drama- all action and very little story.
I saw that Cris had given it a very low score and I kinda of agree with that. 3 stars for action but no stars for story- was there even a story? -seemed to be all action and that can be tiring after awhile.

Paddington 2. 2017. Family. Paddington Brown wants to buy a pop-up book of London for his Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, but it is very expensive, so he must set about earning the money. The book is stolen and Paddington is fitted up for the crime. It's up to the Brown's to discover who the real thief is, while Paddington sets about teaching his cell-mates the importance of good manners. I absolutely loved this. I'll even own up to feeling a little emotional at the end. If you need to rediscover your inner child, this is the film for you. A wonderful cast. What a great year for Sally Hawkins, with this, The Shape of Water and one of my favourites, Maudie. 8.5/10

The Visitor (2007)
5/5

Who's In It:? Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira

What's It About:? A lonesome widower and college economics professor finds his mundane existence suddenly shaken up when he befriends a pair of illegal immigrants, one of whom has recently been threatened with deportation by U.S. immigration authorities,

Do We Eat The popcorn OR Throw The Popcorn:? Eat it but be careful it doesn't get soggy. This was certainly an unexpected gem. it is a heartfelt film about what happens when people...with all their desires and difficulties... bump into one another to express the best part of their humanity. Your heart will go out to Tarek and Zainab and you will feel their frustration with a system that they simply don't understand...I'm an American citizen and even I don't understand it. What it sums up to be is a simple story, very well told, with no hidden agendas. Movie making at its best.

Woody Woodpecker
2.5/5 stars
Ugh- I probably wouldn't have watched this but Timothy Omundson from Psych was in this and I was curious to see it. The highlight was in the extras where they showed an old Woody Woodpecker cartoon which I thought was pretty funny.

The Snowman

Not bad but I found the plot confusing at times.

Mister Rogers & Me

This made me bawl. I watched the original show with my kids. What a wonderful person! There is a 50th year special coming to PBS today but I had to see this other documentary which was very sweet and also really interesting about his impact on children. We certainly need him now - more than ever.

Their Finest (based on the book Their Finest Hour and a Half)

I got interested in this movie when I attended a talk on the Oscar nominees and the movies that should have been nominated. This one was mentioned in the latter category. I thought it was entertaining but in some ways melodramatic and expected. Nice Saturday-afternoon rental, though. 3/5

Any thoughts on the Oscar winners? I've only seen two of the Oscar nominees, so I didn't really feel like I could pick, but I thought the wins for Get Out and Three Billboards were well deserved. The writing stood out for me in the first, the acting in the second. I have not seen The Shape of Water yet but would like to remedy that situation, and I think it's still in some theaters.

>12 sturlington: I did see Their Finest. It's got Bill Nighy, so of course I tracked it down. I think they managed to make it look and feel authentic, and as you can probably guess, I thought the ending was great. I do love a big slap in the face with a wet haddock from time to time.
I didn't have any massive temper tantrums over the Oscars this year. Frequently something I really hated or struggled to finish grabs all the glory. I hated The Revenant and couldn't finish Wolf of Wall Street, Moonlight bored me, and don't get me started on Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)! I think it's unfair that most of the home viewing public haven't had a chance to see many of the nominated films. Dunkirk and Get Out and the visual effects nominees being a few exceptions that prove the rule. I did want Willem Dafoe to win the best supporting actor. I thought his character's role in The Florida Project was a difficult one to convey. I also fancied the Hungarian film On Body and Soul for the foreign language, but I can see that love in an abattoir might not be everyone's cup of tea. I failed to finish Molly's Game and Call Me by Your Name and am still waiting for All the Money in the World and The Insult to surface.

>12 sturlington: Overall I enjoyed the Oscars but Jimmy Kimmel leaving the show to feed people was a waste of time.

I still haven't seen all of the film nominees since most came out at the end of the year and aren't on DVD yet. My husband hated The Shape of Water so wasn't happy that they won anything but everyone else in the family loved it.
We did see Dunkirk at the theater and in surround sound so we felt like we were on the beach. I was happy to see them winning Oscars for sound and editing.
I loved The Greatest Showman's soundtrack so I was sad to see them lose the Oscar for best song.

Despicable Me 3 (2017)
4.5/5

Who's in It?: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Trey Parker

What's It About? After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League for failing to take down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother-a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin's despicable footsteps-one former super-villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be bad.

Eat the popcorn or Throw The Popcorn?: Eat it and enjoy every bite. Who couldn't love a minion and their funny antics? Every character is super cute, even the villains. Using bubblegum as a weapon is a novel idea, and is actually fun and the little minions are cute as usual. This is diffidently worth watching if you don't take your movie fare too seriously.

Blue-Eyed Butcher (2012)
3.5/5

Who's in It?: Sara Paxton, Justin Bruening, W. Earl Brown

What's It About?: Texas beauty Susan Wright appeared to have a fairytale life with an adoring husband, Jeff, two beautiful kids, and close family and friends. But in 2003, six years into their marriage, the fairy tale crumbles when Jeff is found dead and buried in the backyard of their suburban home. The close-knit community is shocked as police accuse Susan of pre-meditated murder -- luring her husband into the bedroom, tying him up and violently stabbing him almost 200 times before haphazardly cleaning up the crime scene. As Jeff's family reels from the devastating news, Susan begins to mount her aggressive defense; that she needed to kill Jeff out of self-preservation for herself and her children after years of physical and mental abuse. But prosecutor Kelly Siegler is skeptical of her defense and forcefully argues she is a cunning, doe-eyed sociopath, who has used her good looks to try to get away with anything in life -- even murder.

Eat the popcorn or Throw The Popcorn?: This was based on a true story. Susan Wright served 25 years and was released in 2014. You don't know if you should feel sorry for Susan...but it doesn't take a law degree to know that she went WAY... WAY... WAY... over the top with what she did. How she ever thought she would not be found guilty I will never be able to figure out. It's an interesting true-crime story that's so far off the beaten path you can't even see it. I agree with her prison therapist that Susan was the "poster child" of abused wives. However, the way she chose to settle the score with her husband was sadistic and had nothing to do with self-defense.

The In-Laws (2003)
4/5

Who's in It?: Albert Brooks, Michael Douglas, Ryan Reynolds

What's It About?: In four days, Jerry Peyser and Steve Tobias will become in-laws when their respective offspring, Melissa Peyser and Mark Tobias, get married. Jerry is a Chicago area podiatrist. He is risk averse to an extreme, afraid of heights including being in tall buildings and flying, even watching airline commercials. He is also extremely controlling, having organized the lavish wedding against the simple affair Melissa had envisioned. He is aggravated that he has not yet met Steve, who has missed one family function after another. Steve is a photocopy machine salesman... or so Mark says. In reality, Steve is a deep undercover CIA field agent, something that Mark knows but is unable to divulge to anyone, even Tracy and her family. His work, is the reason Steve has missed all these family events. Steve finally meets the Peysers, which Steve manipulates into an undercover work dinner. Steve's current mission involves setting up the sale of twenty year old runaway "Olga" a submarine, to a French arms dealer, Jean-Pierre Thibodoux, Jerry inadvertently gets embroiled in Steve's case when he overhears the beginning of the deal going down. Jerry does not believe Steve to be one of "the good guys", especially as he learns that the FBI is after Steve, who they believe has become a rogue agent.

Eat the popcorn or Throw The Popcorn?: Eat it up. The combination of Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks was amazingly good. Michael Douglas and Albert Brooks are so funny. The story is entertaining and easy to follow with some very good action scenes. Overall an hour-and - a -half well spent.

The Outsider. 2018. Crime. Jared Leto plays Nick, a former American GI in a Japanese prison in the 50's. He helps his cellmate escape and in return he is given the chance to be yakuza. A bit like The Godfather with better tailoring and full body tats. I don't understand why Jared Leto is so popular. Other than Requiem for a Dream, he seems to be a master at over-acting. He actually spoiled the new Blade Runner for me. I quite like the need for subtitles in dual-cultural films, although they possibly should have provided them when some of the Japanese actors were doing English dialogue. It was quite bloody, so it was OK. 5/10

I'd say that this about the age when I first read the books. (My son also loves Roald Dahl, btw.) The movie has made some necessary updates, and diversity is well done but quite natural. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1999)
4.5/5

Who's in It?: Donny Osmond, Maria Friedman, Richard Attenborough & a whole bunch more.

What's It About?: A humorously musical retelling of the Biblical story of Joseph. In this filmed adaption of the long-running musical, we are presented with the story of Joseph, son of Jacob. The favored son, he is betrayed by his jealous brothers and sold into slavery and driven to Egypt. Though beset with adversity, Joseph perseveres through wit and faith and becomes the governor of Egypt, second only to the Pharaoh. This all the sets the scene for when he meets his brothers who have come to Egypt to purchase food.

Do we Eat the Popcorn or Throw the Popcorn:? I can't throw any popcorn at this one...I'm having too much fun. If you are offended bu literary licence taken with the events in the Bible...you might want to just slip out now. However if you want to be dazzled with fantastically done stage-sets, costumes and lighting that are beautiful, colorful, and inventive, stick around...you are in for a treat.

3.5/5 stars
This movie is not perfect, could have been edited more and has crude language and some awkward adult situations so definitely is not for children but there is a lot to laugh about in this film. 3/5

Whose in It:? Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts

What's It About:? A young girl comes of age in a dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads with a mother who's an eccentric artist and an alcoholic father who would stir the children's imagination with hope as a distraction to their poverty.

Do We Eat the Popcorn or Throw the Popcorn:?. I certainly wanted to throw something at the Rex Walls character...and the Rose Mary Walls character should have had her head examined for just following along through life with this mad man. This is based on the book by Jeanette Walls, the second oldest daughter. I heard her speak several years ago about the book and her childhood and you didn't know how to react. These adults(?) should never had had one child much less four. The children literally raised themselves and somehow manged to rise above their beginnings. I believe the strongest asset for this movie had going for it was how it took an experience unique to only a small number of people and made it relate so much to the greater majority. It also made me thank whatever being rules this universe that my childhood and my parents were "normal."

Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore (2010)
4/5

Whose in It:? A whole bunch of cats and some dogs. Only two humans in the whole thing.

What's It About:? In the age-old battle between cats and dogs, one crazed feline has taken things a paw too far. Kitty Galore, formerly an agent for cat spy organization MEOWS, has gone rogue and hatched a diabolical plan to not only bring her canine enemies to heel, but take down her former kitty comrades and make the world her scratching post. Faced with this unprecedented threat, cats and dogs will be forced to join forces for the first time in history in an unlikely alliance to save themselves -- and their humans.

Do We Eat the Popcorn or Throw the Popcorn:? Eat it diffidently. No animal lover could resist these cuties. The movie is well done and is just the perfect length. People who really like cats and dogs will love it. Be sure to watch the funny, cute video clips in the end of the movie.

The movie was gorgeous but it failed to capture the dreamlike surreality, that sense of being in an utterly alien place, that I loved so much in the book. Talk about a action packed film. This reminded me of the last Jason Bourne film which had little plot but was mostly action. This did have a plot and was beautifully filmed but would have appreciated a little more back story.

Do We Eat the Popcorn or Throw the Popcorn?: Eat it and get a REALLY BIG tub so that you don't have to leave and miss a single of moment of this film. This incredibly interesting film is composed of judicial thrillers... intrigue...plot twists... suspense... and I will have to admit some far-fetched elements. What it will do is keep you watching and rooting for the goods guys even though you know from the start that their plan had so many ways it could go wrong. There is a surprise ending that I didn't ever even think about.

I've been a bit under the weather and have taken to my bed and listened to audiobooks, but I'm feeling better and thought I Can Speak. 2017. Korean comedy (???) might be a good place to start. Granny Ok-Boon is a thorn in the side of the council complaints dept. Everyday she bombards the civil servants with proof of minor infractions. A new employee offers to be her sole point of contact and after he discovers she has been feeding his young brother he offers to give her English lessons. We believe she wishes to communicate with her long lost brother in America, but if fact she intends being a witness in a court case of WW2 comfort women vs Japan. It very quickly lost it's comedy feel and became a different film altogether. A good film, but the wrong film for me at this time 7/10

The Mask You Live In

I thought this was a very interesting documentary on boys and how the societal concept of masculinity is wrecking our society and our sons. Definitely thought provoking!

>55 JulieLill: I saw a two part documentary last year that had a huge effect on me, "No More Boys And Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free?" If you get the chance, watch it. I thought it was PC stuff about gender reassignment in children, but it was all about pink princesses with low ambition and blue tough guys, unable to express themselves. It's horrifying, the damage we all do to our children because we know no better.

All the Money in the World. 2017. Fact based drama from Ridley Scott. In 1973, J Paul Getty III was kidnapped in Italy. His grandfather, the richest man in the world, refused to pay the $17 million ransom, saying that he had 14 grandchildren. If he paid the ransom, he would have 14 kidnapped grandchildren. The teen only had his mother fighting for him, and it was only when the boy's ear was sent to a newspaper, did the oil magnate budge his stance, by offering a loan to the desperate mother. I don't know how Kevin Spacey would have played the part, but his hasty replacement Christopher Plummer may have deserved his nominated "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar for playing the most grasping, rapacious, heartless, soulless imitation of a human being I've ever seen. 8/10

>41 JulieLill: Leap. I remember getting my knickers in a twist about the "heroine" obtaining a place at the prestigious school by deception and then she treated her long time friend and ally like dirt, when she thought she didn't need him anymore. Do you think I read too much into this girlie bit of animated nonsense?
I loved Maudie. Sally Hawkins rocks!

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool. 2017. Biography/romance. Aspiring young actor Peter Turner (Jamie Bell) falls in love with much older film star Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening). They lived the dream briefly in L.A., but Ms Grahame's odd behaviour forces Peter to return home to Liverpool. Two years later the actress falls ill and asks for her ex-lover to take care of her. Am I ageist, sexist or was the chemistry wrong, but i found myself cringing when the couple embraced? The love and affection felt real, but the tonsil tennis felt horribly wrong. I know we are used to seeing old men in films with much younger female love interests and we don't turn a hair. It must be my problem. A nice film, although I was a bit frightened by Stephen Graham in a black curly Kevin Keegan wig. I have so many issues! Great performances from the leads and supporting cast. 7/10

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

I loved this quirky film and the whole cast. The ending which was left open- dropped the rating for me.
