So I read a book in like 2013 and I thought it was called "The Forever War" I didn't remember the author and now I can't find who wrote it. The book cover was mostly dark with yellow lights on it from a birds-eye view of what appeared to be a city. It was about this society that developed virtual fighting. So these highly respected piolets never actually put their lives in danger and drove the plane via remote control. It was like a video game or them. Something happened where the main characters went to the battleground and found that there was nothing there. The characters realized that peace was being maintained through fake battles.
Sounds a lot like The Always War by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Good luck.
