See the blog post for details.

We're doing our first LT double feature in June, combining OLOB with our next LT Movie Night. LT Staff created a slate of four books, each with a (fairly recent) film adaptation. Cast your votes in the polls below (each poll is in a new post).

Voting continues now through May 31st at 12:00pm EDT.

You can vote for each movie/film pair to express your likes, dislikes, and indifference. We've assigned point values to each of the three vote categories—the book/movie pair with the most points next Thursday will be our picks for June.

Direct links to polls:

All the choices are widely available—in libraries, used bookstores, and in paperback. All are reasonably popular and well-regarded, and if you're a Netflix member in the US*, all movies are available on Netflix.

*Possibly in other countries as well, but we can't verify each one.

This interests me because I haven't read it yet or seen the movie!

I would like to hear what others think of the movie!

I've read the book, but haven't seen the movie.

I love Neil Gaiman's work, and *think* I read the book, but it was so long ago, I don't remember & would love to revisit it.

I've seen the film but never read the book.

Stardust is a good one to compare the film and the book. The film honors the book, but goes in different directions.

It's completely and totally incoherent in a voting thread like this when you just talk about "the book" and "the movie". We don't have nested replies. Please mention which title you're talking about.

MIOST DEPRESSING MOVIE I EVER SAW

General comment: could you please post the title of the book or movie that you're commenting on or asking a question about?

Stardust is the only one I would not read nor watch.

Reply format is confusing as it is not placed under message to which one is replying but as a new post at ending of string of posts. So replying to Cariola, yes, I agree, please note title of book/movie when making a comment.

If voting is open until June 31st, how can we finish reading the book by June 25th?

Boy, did I dislike Into the Wild. It probably has little to do with the moviemaking but the utter nihilism of the kid. Ugh

Stardust is one of very few movies I liked even more than the book. And it's Neil Gaiman!

Sadly, Stardust is pretty but shallow. Not much to discuss there if one doesn't want to just squee. I love both the book and the film, but definitely the least interesting pair to discuss.

Personally, I'm not interested at all in reading or watching Stardust, so it looks like I will be sitting out this one.

LOVE Neil Gaiman. Haven't read Stardust yet, but it's on my list. "Having to" read it is a great excuse!

I have read and enjoyed Stardust and Atonement. The Price of Salt looks interesting.

I noted American Gods was selected in March 2014, might be interesting to compare/contrast themes & writing style between that and Stardust. Atonement sounds interesting to me as well.

If Stardust gets selected, will we be reading the original graphic novel or the text-only adaptation? (Yes, they're different.) I have the graphic novel, and will participate if so, but would sit out the text-only version.

>28 lorax: Good question. I'm inclined to let members choose and read the edition they prefer. I own (and have already read) the graphic novel, so I'll probably pick up the text-only version if this ends up being our selection.

>29 lorannen:

Thanks, I'll probably skip it then. Not feeling up for the confusion and nitpicking about clashing versions when half the people are talking about the beautiful art and the other half say "What art???" and half are talking about description and the other half say "What descriptions???" (Goes to change vote.)

>30 lorax: Fair enough. Maybe we do separate discussion threads depending on edition (along with some that are relevant to both)? Not trying to convince you to change your mind, just want to make sure as many people who want to participate can do so!

Is an an email list associated with this so we can stay updated via email?

>32 amimariscal: I'm afraid not. Discussion will take place here in this Talk group, though, and you can stay up-to-date by:
  • Joining the group (go to the group page and click the "Join group" link in the upper-right corner). Then, when you visit Talk, you can select "Your groups & posts" from the left-hand menu, to see recently updated threads, new posts in the group, etc.

  • If there are just specific threads you want to follow, star those threads, using the star icon at the top of this page. That will make it easy to skim for them on the main Talk page.

And it looks like Stardust is our winner, by quite a bit! I'm certainly surprised, but not unpleasantly so. I'm working on getting the announcement blog post and appropriate links in place now.
