Set in the depression/bootlegger era. Male lead character was a small time outlaw. I don't think he ever belonged to one of the big gangs. Eventually, he pairs up with a woman. Similar to Bonnie and Clyde, but not a disguised retelling. At the end of the story, he and and his girlfriend and another outlaw couple get into a shootout with police. The man makes a run for his car with 2 broken legs. He is either caught or killed.
It was written by a prolific author. In the introduction to the reprint edition I read, he tells that this was his first published book and the fastest one ever from submission to being printed. It was probably originally published in the 50s or 60s. The edition I read came out in, I think, the 80s.
I might be mixing up 2 different books with the reprint part.
Cross posted at Goodreads.
Already suggested and eliminated:
The Orchard Keeper by Cormac McCarthy
The Moonshine War
George Baxt
Max Allan Collins
Donald E. Westlake
Thieves Like Us by Edward Anderson
The Getaway by Jim Thompson Also looked at Thompson's other books. Nothing matched.
I've looked at Elmore Leonard, but I haven't found anything that seemed right. Still, it might be one of his.
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

Sorry to see all of your bumps! I'm afraid I've got nothing for this one. :(

Billy Bathgate, E.L. Doctorow? You might enjoy it, even if that's not it.

I've thought of it, but the site annoys me. Though, since this is taking so long I may bite the bullet and give it a go.

A bump for this thread and a question. There's a thread about the changes to the Early Reviewers page here on the site and I've lost it. I started reading it a few days ago, but forgot to bookmark it and now I can't remember where it was. Anybody else know?

And now there's second thread on the new Early Reviewers layout if anyone is interested.
