GOALS

Here I intend to track my challenges and progress. Releases and new books are tracked in the comment No xxx and list of the books in the comment No xxx
For 2019 I'm paying attention to:

- IN/OUT ratio. Target value is 1 :)
- Checking the book in 3-6 month after receiving it (to decide if to send further or continue reading. I won't need to finish the book, but read at least a couple of chapters and decide if I'd like to continue with the book some time in the future or let it go, instead of sending it on unread). For this I will keep the list of books bought/received.
- Years distribution. Categories to track: before WWII, XXI century, XIX century, second part of XX century, new releases (2018-2019)
- Language distribution. The goal is to read more in German, Russian and any language I will be learning at the moment
- be more conscious of the postage. The ideal solution could be sending fewer packages with more content, so combining several sweeps/tags + send books only (since they can be sent as an unregistered surface mail which is twice cheaper than usual.
- low rating/DNF situation. In the ideal world all 1- and 2-star reads should be DNFed.

IN PROGRESS:
Beartown by Fredrik Backman (2016). English
Im Westen nichts Neues by Erich Maria Remarque (1929). German

Now: The Physics of Time - and the Ephemeral Moment That Einstein Could Not Explain by Richard A. Muller, narrated by Christopher Grove

That's a terrific set of goals. Good luck for the new year!

I too have been working hard on my in/out ratio. For one thing, I'd like to reduce the amount of stuff I have in my house, so that of course includes books. I'm also trying to stop myself from buying books that I end up not reading for years. However, for better or worse, I don't count non-purchased e-books (such as free public-domain ones) among my TBR pile.

Thank you! I can totally relate :)

Wow, impressive!!!

I've actually done decently at my in/out ratio the past few years, but mostly because of downsizing, not necessarily if I did read/purchased. I pitched around 50 poly sci books that I just don't have it in me to stomach any longer, and I could easily purge more. Maybe you'll inspire me to keep track of my read/purchased--- that would be an interesting value.

33Amaryllys
nov. 26, 2019, 3:17 am

My statistics for 11 months of reading:

I was reading the books mostly from the last decade: 16 books (80%) are from 2010-2019 period. I have read only two books published in 50-s and 60-s and none that were published before WWII.

Most of the books I read were in English (17), and I manage to read one book in Russian, German and Dutch each.

Genres distribution:
sci-fi (4)
urban fantasy (4) - mainly thanks to Rivers of London spiral I'm hosting this year
memoir/biography (3)
contemporary (3)
mystery/thriller (2)
nonfiction (2)
history (1)
children's book (1)

Sci-fi/fantasy are in the lead as usual. Happy to see that I continued to read more memoirs and nonfiction.

I had a good reading year: 13 books (65%) are either 4 or 5 stars
I read only 20 books out of planned 40, the main reason - really bad reading summer, with no books finished at all

My highest rated books are
- children's book in Dutch
- history book on Mary Queen of Scots (devoured it after watching the movie last winter)
- first book in an urban fantasy series
- second book in a dystopian sci-fi series
- contemporary book on devastating effects of unrequited love

I was mostly reading new for me authors and haven't read anything by my favorite authors this year.

34Amaryllys
Editat: des. 8, 2019, 5:56 am

I am also thinking about the goals for 2020. I will probably keep checking years and genres distribution. I might want to check how many of the authors I read are new to me - or do I prefer to return to the authors I like.
I'm a little tired of checking in/out ratio, so I might skip it next year. I need to think about other ways I can control my book budget XD
I'd like to read more on the languages I am studying, too. I would love to read 4 classics in 2020 - preferably not rereads
