We are going to do a year long Dresden Files group read! Since several of us have already started the thread, we decided to do it in this order:
January: catch-up month with thread for short stories, graphic novels, etc.
February: Summer Knight
March: Death Masks
April: Blood Rites
May: Dead Beat
June: Proven Guilty
July: White Night
August: Small Favor
September: Turn Coat
October: Changes
November: Ghost Story
December: Cold Days
That means if you wish to join us and haven't started the series, within the next month or two you'll need to read:
They're not heavy reading, and are quite fun, so I'm sure if you want to join you can manage!

I've reread Storm Front as I had completely forgotten the story. It is a fast read and introduces several characters that I vaguely remember as reappearing in future books.

I think the first and third book of the series will be important for moving forward. During my re-read of it last month, I saw nothing in the second book that developed the overall plot - but I'd still suggest reading it. It's possible it develops something that I'm unaware is coming up, because I've only read the first three books. :)

>1 The_Hibernator: Thanks for setting this up! I've read the first three books but am interested in seeing the discussion here.

I don't know if I can wait till October to read Changes, but I'll definitely be around through the year. This is by far my favorite series of all time.
8The_Hibernator
Yeah, I'm glad I re-read. I didn't really remember much. Excited to move to a book I haven't read yet, though!

So, I have read the first 14 books in this series, some of them multiple times. I sort of want to read them again because they are for the most part a lot of fun and I actually loved most of them. But I got tired of all of the (what I perceive as) homophobic micro-aggressions that keep happening all through the series (to the point where there was like a tiny throwaway joke at the beginning of Skin Game which put me off reading the rest of it in 2014, but I think I should get over that and read it anyway since it's probably quite enjoyable). I suppose my question is, does anyone else have an experience where there is one thing that really annoys them about an otherwise excellent read, and do you read it anyway or abandon it?
10The_Hibernator
Yes, I do. And homophobic references would certainly do that to me. There are lots of enjoyable books out there. We don t need to read ones that bother us. That said, you're welcome to join us if you can overcome this annoyance.

Based on the level of activity of the Dresden Files catch-up thread, I'm going to guess that one thread (with continuations if necessary) can suffice for the whole year. Shall we just make one more thread titled "Dresden Files Year-long Read" and start with The Summer Knight?
12mathgirl40
>11 The_Hibernator: That is fine with me. I'd already read the first 3 books earlier, but this month, I reread the graphic novel version of Fool Moon to get back into the Dresden world. I've put a library hold on The Summer Knight and hope to get it soon.

By the way, please consider posting your comments in this month's ScaredyKIT thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/302426
The challenge topic is "The Corporeal Undead", so that would include vampires, for example, which feature prominently in a number of the Dresden books.
Actually, would Bob be an example of the corporeal undead, since his spirit is tied to the physical skull?

I'm not sure Bob is corporal, since he can be released from the skull. But that is just a matter of how you wish to interpret the situation.

Summary: In this third book of the Dresden Files, Harry Dresden, the only private detective Wizard in Chicago, begins the story by fighting a ghouly of ghosts (ghosts come in ghoulies, right?) scared up by…what? He doesn’t know. Soon, he becomes entangled in (seemingly unrelated) vampire politics as well. (Of course, everything’s related in a Dresden Files book, but whatever.) Can the most impolitic of people act with diplomacy if the need arises? (The answer is: of course not.)
My thoughts: Another winner in the Dresden Files books. I really enjoyed this one, although (as you can tell by my sarcasm above) I do think they are getting a little formulaic in the sense that Dresden is hit by a whole bunch of unrelated stuff all at once, and then it all gets tied up in a neat little bow at the end of the story. Other than that, the stories are quite interesting. I was so eager to get to the next one (despite my resolution to read one a month), that I’ve already finished it. I’ll review it at the end of the month, and try to catch up on some of my other reviews this and next week. 🙂

>11 The_Hibernator: That works for me - if it get's too long, we can have a continuation thread.
I've been a lurker so far, but enjoying everyone's comments on what they've read (or re-read)!

All right, I finished Summer Knight. The stakes are higher with the faeries and Harry Dresden is beaten up as usual. Mab's last proposition is interesting. I wonder how Harry will fend it - if he can. That would make a unexpected development.
19mathgirl40
I finished Summer Knight also. I really enjoyed this one, especially the interplay between the Summer and Winter courts. The series keeps getting better with every book.
20The_Hibernator
I also finished The Summer Knight. This is the first book that I hadn't already read, and it was quite enjoyable. I love how characters from older books return in this book. I have the next book on reserve at the library, but it won't come till the end of next month.
21h-mb
Just starting on Death masks.
22mathgirl40
I'm midway through Death Masks myself. Wait lists for Dresden books seem to be unpredictable at my library. I had a long wait for Summer Knight but got Death Masks right away. I might not be able to stick to the one-book-a-month schedule for this group read, but I'll try to continue reading Dresden Files throughout the year in any case.
23The_Hibernator
>22 mathgirl40: I'm having the same problem with my library.
25mathgirl40
I finished Death Masks. For some reason that I can't quite pin down, I didn't like this one as much as Summer Knight. Maybe I just find faeries more interesting than vampires?
26The_Hibernator
Finally got Death Masks from the library today. I'll let you know what I think!
27h-mb
I'm starting Blood rites. Thomas is back. The vampire war is still raging. Ready for a new adventure!
28LisaMorr
I'll be starting Blood Rites as soon as I get back from this trip - should we carry on here, or on the other thread (the 'main thread') https://www.librarything.com/topic/303379# that was set up?
29mathgirl40
>28 LisaMorr: Good question. I guess we should wait to hear what our host decides.
I finished Blood Rites and enjoyed it very much. There are lots of interesting revelations! I don't want to say more, for fear of spoiling the book for others.

I haven't made it to Blood Rites yet. Having trouble getting it from the library. And I really don't care which thread we use. It's all good!
31h-mb
I've read Dead Beat, the seventh book in the series. Life becomes complicated now that Harry is made a Warden while he's on rather friendly terms with a demon!
32h-mb
Hello, I finished Proven guilty. I really liked this one. Harry began as a "poor lonesome boy" in the first volume but now he's caught in a net of relationships and much more integrated in his own world.
33h-mb
I'm feeling a bit lonely here ! I finished White night, Small favor and Turn coat. Dresden is more and more skilful with each book so it doesn't feel too much repetitive.
34LisaMorr
>33 h-mb: Good for you! I have Proven Guilty up next, just been putting other books ahead of it. I've got so many series going on! I'll try to get to it this month and make a big push in October for more Dresden.
37hailelib
I read Dead Beat a few days ago and Harry finds himself in trouble as usual. The way he finally solved the multiple problems was interesting. I may look for the next one in a couple of weeks.
38LisaMorr
I just finished Proven Guilty and really liked it. Learning a little more about what's happening in the war with the Red Council, but still more intrigue there, then how Harry ends up with an apprentice, after taking care of lots of evil creatures (of course!).
>33 h-mb: Good to hear that the next three aren't repetitive, maybe I'll be able to slip those into the rest of my end of the year reading push.

>38 LisaMorr: Glad to hear you liked it, as that is next on my list.
I just finished Dead Beat and really enjoyed it. It was a good October read, as it's set in the days before Hallowe'en. Also, one of the main characters is a polka band member at Oktoberfest events. My city (Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario, Canada) has a large German population and Oktoberfest is a very big deal here!

Unfortunately, I won't be reading any more Dresden Files this year, but I'm hoping to continue with the series next year. Tor just announced that a new novel will be published in June 2020 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series!
