Hi
When I do a check out for a Patron taking multiple books using a barcode scanner it would be nice if the cursor would move automatically through the whole form. Depending on whether I set the scanner to add a TAB as terminator or, I set the scanner to add an Enter as a terminator it behaves differently.

1. Using a TAB as terminator:
When I scan a barcode on a book it displays the barcode in the search field and no more... Pressing the keyboard Enter does nothing .... the keyboard TAB does nothing .... you have to pick up the mouse and click on the search icon, then it finds the book and you can scan again, and use the mouse to continue book after book.
Now move to the Patron field and scan the Patron's barcode and it happily picks up the Patron Name and moves onto the date field automatically.

2. Using an Enter as terminator:
Now I can scan the barcodes on multiple books and they automatically are each picked up and displayed under the search bar.
When I move to the Patron field and scan the Patron's barcode it displays the barcode number and nothing else. Using a keyboard enter does nothing .... using keyboard TAB moves to the Date field

Please can you allow for either the TAB terminator or the Enter terminator, or BOTH to move automatically through the form without the need to pick up the mouse or use the keyboard. (after multiple books scan I see as the only time necessary to use the mouse as it can't tell when you are finished scanning books). This should be quite an easy fix as you are catering for some of it already.

So, the "Enter" as a terminator is what you want here. We don't want to move you out of the search box for building/scanning your Item List until you're done, and once you enter/scan a patron barcode you don't have to do anything else but click (or tab) to the next box to apply the patron. I'm sorry for any inconvenience here, but I don't believe this is something we'll change in the near future.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, or if there's anything else I can help with. Thanks for your patience.

Hi Kristi. Thank you for the reply. Here's a thought.
Yes, the Enter as a terminator is the preferred option, but when you move to and scan the Patron's barcode the patron's name is not displayed before you manually move to the next field, which in most cases is probably clicking on the Save button as the rest of the fields are default and won't normally require changing.
We are using sheets of barcodes for the borrowers (21 or more to a page). It is possible to scan the wrong patron code and not realise it. So if clicking the Save button is next the issue is complete and the book(s) have been issued to the wrong person.

If the Enter terminator was active on the Patron field the cursor would move down to the Date field and display the name for the code just scanned. The librarian then has the opportunity to check the name before releasing the issue.

It is very likely that teachers (or staff) will also be issuing and receiving books and little mistakes like this could be frequent and not checked.
I know this is a cosmetic thing, but it would help eliminate possible errors.

>3 wyndhamcc: I see your use case here; thanks for explaining!

I will ask the developers if we can auto-display the patron's name after entering a barcode. As it stands, you can simply click outside of the patron box to see the name of the patron fill in underneath, so you have something to work with in the meantime. I hope this helps.

Okay! We're getting a fix in the works, which will allow both TAB and Enter as terminators in either field (for Item List and Patron Barcode). Will update once it's done.

Hi Kristi,
Thanks for sorting this out. I'm sure these little changes will help others.
I don't want to be a nuisance but as I was a mainframe programmer I test and try different procedures out :-)
