As you finish a Big Fat Book please leave a message about the book you have just read and hopefully we will read 100 or more BIG FAT BOOKS this year.
2Andrew-theQM
Thanks >1 johnsimpson: As we are calling BFBs any book with 500+ pages this year I bet we exceed this target. 😊
3JayneCM
>2 Andrew-theQM: Definitely! I know I had 10+ books last year that were over 500.
5Andrew-theQM
>4 mnleona: I think as long aS it has over 500 Pages it will count for 2020, whatever format it is in.
6Tess_W
>4 mnleona: I even count audiobooks. I go to Amazon, find out what the page number is in the written form, and if it's equivalent to over 500 pages, I will count it!

8. 2019 - ☊ Empire of Lies by Raymond Khoury - 567 pgs. - ★★★★ - 1/6/2020
This book is an alternate reality which asks "What if The Ottoman Empire won the battle of Vienna in 1683?" What would the world look like today? I enjoyed learning about the history of The Ottoman Empire and found the plot to be very believable. I found the characters of Rasheed, Kamal, Taymoor, Nisreen and Ramazan to be very well-drawn. I thought Nisreen was very courageous in wanting to travel back in time in order to change some things. The Tattooed Man was very unique and quite chilling at times. I found the book to be a page turner although there were some slow parts. Towards the end, the story took off and did not let go until the very end. I have never read a Raymond Khoury book but look forward to reading some of his other books. I would highly recommend this book to those who love historical fiction with a touch of fantasy. I would like to thank Bookishfirst.com for a free book for an honest review.

Title: Babylon's Ashes
Series: The Expanse
By: James S. A. Corey
Narrated by: Jefferson Mays
Lenght: 19:58/576 pages
Owned: 848 days
Rating: ★★★★½
Thoughts:
This is a series that I've been working my way through for a while. I enjoy them, but because I am so invested in the character it's taxing to read. I'm always worried someone I care about it going to die. Again.

20. 1985 - ☊ Lie Down with Lions by Ken Follett - 508 Pgs. - ★★★★★ - 1/14/2020
Ellis, the American. Jean-Pierre, the Frenchman. 2 men opposite sides, a woman torn between them. A deadly romantic triangle, a mission with global stakes. The Russians want to assassinate Masud, leader of the Afghan guerrilla force. A gripping, masterful plot which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Audio narration was excellent. Intriguing characters. It‘s a love story and a struggle for freedom. Recommended.

21. 1983 - On Wings With Eagles by Ken Follett - 500 Pgs. - ★★★★★ - 1/15/2020
When two of his American employees were held hostage in Iran, H. Ross Perot and a select group of his employees took matters into their own hands. Only Ross Perot could make this happen. His team consisted of a group of volunteers from the executive ranks of his corporation, trained by a retired Green Beret officer. To free the imprisoned Americans, they would face incalculable odds on a mission that only true heroes would have dared. . . .
This is a fast-paced adventure story that kept the pages turning until the very end. Only Follett could write this book and do it justice. Hard to believe that it is a true story but I do remember when it happened in 1978. This book is not to be missed. It is a marvelous rare read!

26. ✔1997 - ☊ Déjà Dead (Temperance Brennan, #1) by Kathy Reichs - 560 pgs. - ★★★★ - 1/22/2020
TV show, Bones, is based upon this series. Tempe Brennan, Quebec‘s director of forensic anthropology, is in search of a serial killer which has killed her best friend and has her daughter in mortal danger. A slow beginning but fascinating look of working in a coroner‘s office. Harrowing plot and characters. Impeccable writing and suspenseful. Looking forward to book 2 and recommended to those who love gripping thrillers.

Stockholm Police find lifeless body of woman on an abandoned yacht. A man’s body is hanged - a suspicious suicide. Are these deaths somehow related? Joona Linda & Saga Bauer investigate. Lots of action and very gripping plot keeps the pages turning! Only complaint is I’m finding these Swedish crime books a bit longer than necessary otherwise interesting storylines. Looking forward to next book and recommend this one to those who love thrillers.

Copenhagen Department Q has another cold case to solve - brutal double murder of a brother and sister 20 years ago. A bit long-winded but suspenseful and an insightful look at ruthless people. Can be read as standalone. Looking forward to next book & recommended to those who love Nordic thrillers.

I am repeating that challenge again this year but i am behind the figures of two years ago, last time i read 47 books that year, all of 500 pages or more and i am only on my eighth so far this year.

130) Jerusalem by Alan Moore, 1266 pages.
I read this as an audio book. At 60:42 hours, it is the second longest audio book I’ve ever read. (Only The Power Broker by Robert A. Caro, at 66:12 hours, was longer.)
Jerusalem is a fabulous novel, though it isn’t going to be for everyone. Nominally, it’s a fantasy. Maybe. But it probably isn’t what most fantasy fans are looking for in a “fantasy” story. Fantastical is probably a better description. The plot is meandering with lots of wonderful digressions that go on longer than some novellas. One chapter is a Beckett like play with the ghost of Beckett as a character; one chapter is told from the point of view of James Joyce’s daughter in an invented language; one chapter is a 16 page poem. Great stuff for the right kind of reader (or audio book listener).

I thought I'd do some group stats for the half-way point (June 30).
As you know, back in >1 johnsimpson: John was hoping this group would read 100 BFBs this year. The group have smashed this goal already, by reaching 100 books on April 16, and by June 30 we have collectively read 202 BFBs!
Over these past 6 months, 25 members have recorded at least 1 BFB.
The total pages recorded as of June 30 is 130,123 for 200 books (2 of the books did not have number of pages recorded, so they are excluded from the pages stats).
That comes out to an average number of pages per book of approximately 651 pages.
Here is the breakdown by months:
Jan: 36 books/ 23,189 pages
Feb: 28 books/ 18,486 pages
Mar: 21 books/ 12,483 pages (note: 2 books in this month did not have pages recorded)
Apr: 35 books/ 22,050 pages
May: 37 books/ 24,403 pages
Jun: 45 books/ 29,512 pages
Clearly, June was our best month of reading and March was our lowest reading month. Perhaps the lowered reading in March may be attributed to the beginning of the major impact of the coronavirus pandemic on all of us. In fact we read more books in February (29 days--the shortest month) than in March (31 days). But we have made up for it in April, May and June!
And here's the number of books read by page counts:
Books with:
--500-599 pages = 113 books read by the group
--600-699 pages = 39 books
--700-799 pages = 17 books
--800-899 pages = 12 books
--900-999 pages = 6 books
--1000+ pages = 13 books
Interesting that there were more 1000+page books read than in the 900-999 range.
Lots of massive reading here. Congrats to everyone for a job well done and carry on in the second half!

These two books are collections of wordless novels, reproductions of woodcuts. I suppose they are early examples of graphic novels, expect there are no words. The reader has to determine the stories from the pictures. They are also an interesting peek into the Great Depression and working class issues.

Dec 11 2019 - we had read 128 books of 600 pages or more.
Dec 11 2020 - we have read 129 books of 600 pages or more !

Notably the group has read 25 1,000+ page books so far, John has read most of them but well done everyone !

>329 bryanoz:, Love the stats Bryan and i cannot believe that as a group we have read 25 1,000+ page books. I am on my 11th of these and would have liked to have had one a month but i can't complain about 11 if i finish it, i will really even if i have to spend all of the 31st December reading to get it done before the bells strike midnight. I think 2021 will be a bit of a rest but i will probably do a few in the 500 to 599 page range.

It appears that our final count of books is 336, with the last 3 books in >346 MccMichaelR:.
However, after reviewing the list we seem to be missing these numbered books:
#244 (skips from 243 to 245)
#287 and #288 (skips from 286 to 289)
This would put our total as of today back at 333 books read as a group. Would be grateful if someone else would double-check the numbering.

Yes I counted them too and you are right. We are missing 244, 287 and 288 (both my fault)
