This book is an alternate reality which asks "What if The Ottoman Empire won the battle of Vienna in 1683?" What would the world look like today? I enjoyed learning about the history of The Ottoman Empire and found the plot to be very believable. I found the characters of Rasheed, Kamal, Taymoor, Nisreen and Ramazan to be very well-drawn. I thought Nisreen was very courageous in wanting to travel back in time in order to change some things. The Tattooed Man was very unique and quite chilling at times. I found the book to be a page turner although there were some slow parts. Towards the end, the story took off and did not let go until the very end. I have never read a Raymond Khoury book but look forward to reading some of his other books. I would highly recommend this book to those who love historical fiction with a touch of fantasy. I would like to thank Bookishfirst.com for a free book for an honest review.

The Russians want to assassinate Masud, leader of the Afghan guerrilla force. A gripping, masterful plot which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Audio narration was excellent. Intriguing characters. It‘s a love story and a struggle for freedom. Recommended.

This is a fast-paced adventure story that kept the pages turning until the very end. Only Follett could write this book and do it justice. Hard to believe that it is a true story but I do remember when it happened in 1978. This book is not to be missed. It is a marvelous rare read!

Looking forward to book 2 and recommended to those who love gripping thrillers.

Stockholm Police find lifeless body of woman on an abandoned yacht. A man’s body is hanged - a suspicious suicide. Are these deaths somehow related? Joona Linda & Saga Bauer investigate. Lots of action and very gripping plot keeps the pages turning! Only complaint is I’m finding these Swedish crime books a bit longer than necessary otherwise interesting storylines. Looking forward to next book and recommend this one to those who love thrillers.

Copenhagen Department Q has another cold case to solve - brutal double murder of a brother and sister 20 years ago. They find out that Kimmie, a homeless woman, holds the key but they need to track her down. Violent characters who hide behind their money are suspects. A bit long-winded but suspenseful and an insightful look at ruthless people. Can be read as standalone. Looking forward to next book & recommended to those who love Nordic thrillers.

Another fast-paced novel from Lackberg who is a master of suspense and plotting. Family secrets are about to be revealed. Love the characters of Patrik and Erica. They make a great team to solve crime in this small fishing village. Can’t wait to read the next installment. Recommend to thriller lovers.

I read this as an audio book. At 60:42 hours, it is the second longest audio book I’ve ever read. (Only The Power Broker by Robert A. Caro, at 66:12 hours, was longer.)

Jerusalem is a fabulous novel, though it isn’t going to be for everyone. Nominally, it’s a fantasy. Maybe. But it probably isn’t what most fantasy fans are looking for in a “fantasy” story. Fantastical is probably a better description. The plot is meandering with lots of wonderful digressions that go on longer than some novellas. One chapter is a Beckett like play with the ghost of Beckett as a character; one chapter is told from the point of view of James Joyce’s daughter in an invented language; one chapter is a 16 page poem. Great stuff for the right kind of reader (or audio book listener).

I thought I'd do some group stats for the half-way point (June 30).

As you know, back in >1 johnsimpson: John was hoping this group would read 100 BFBs this year. The group have smashed this goal already, by reaching 100 books on April 16, and by June 30 we have collectively read 202 BFBs!

Over these past 6 months, 25 members have recorded at least 1 BFB.

The total pages recorded as of June 30 is 130,123 for 200 books (2 of the books did not have number of pages recorded, so they are excluded from the pages stats).

That comes out to an average number of pages per book of approximately 651 pages.

Here is the breakdown by months:

Jan: 36 books/ 23,189 pages
Feb: 28 books/ 18,486 pages
Mar: 21 books/ 12,483 pages (note: 2 books in this month did not have pages recorded)
Apr: 35 books/ 22,050 pages
May: 37 books/ 24,403 pages
Jun: 45 books/ 29,512 pages

Clearly, June was our best month of reading and March was our lowest reading month. Perhaps the lowered reading in March may be attributed to the beginning of the major impact of the coronavirus pandemic on all of us. In fact we read more books in February (29 days--the shortest month) than in March (31 days). But we have made up for it in April, May and June!

And here's the number of books read by page counts:

Interesting that there were more 1000+page books read than in the 900-999 range.

These two books are collections of wordless novels, reproductions of woodcuts. I suppose they are early examples of graphic novels, expect there are no words. The reader has to determine the stories from the pictures. They are also an interesting peek into the Great Depression and working class issues.

Dec 11 2020 - we have read 129 books of 600 pages or more !

Although this year we are counting 500+ pages as big, there has not been a drop off of the 600+ reads.

Notably the group has read 25 1,000+ page books so far, John has read most of them but well done everyone !
