Easy answer for me:

The Outer Banks, specifically the less commercialized strip between Nags Head and Cape Hatteras. Rodanthe, Avon, Buxton, Pea Island. It soothes my soul to be out on a quiet beach with a bottle of sunscreen, some cold Evian, and a good book.

How about you? Where do you go for relaxation/fun/excitement?

Why the beautiful mountains of Western NC of course!

I live about 45 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway, so that is probably my favorite "easy" destination, especially the sections between the Mt. Jefferson overlook in North Carolina and Mabrey's Mill in Virginia. I've driven those stretches many, many times. I grew up in Yancey County, so I love the mountains.

Ocracoke Island. I love the bookstore there, and the fact that you can walk or bike everywhere. Speaking of Ocracoke, anyone else read "Up Through the Water", by Darcey Steinke? That was the first book I read by her, and it's about Ocracoke.

Beverly, I'm a cyclist and thoroughly enjoyed my Outer Banks tour last year. I hope to do it again soon. And you're right; that stretch is spectacular.

I'm a beach girl, so any beach in NC is where I want to be!

My wife and I were married at the Pisgah Inn, so it wins on that alone.

Wrightsville Beach/Wilmington. Not to mention the University of NC at Wilmington has an excellent English/Creative Writing Department.

Wilmington is spectacular right now. Highlands is so very beautiful in the summer and fall. The Carolina Inn at UNC has spectacularly comfortable beds. Masonboro Island is fabulous, but you need a boat connection to get there. The ferry ride from Fort Fisher to Southport is lovely. Cape Lookout is stunning and has a beautiful lighthouse.

I'm not originally form North Carolina. I was in the Army and I was stationed in Fort Bragg.

On a 4th of July weekend, I went with a friend to stay at her parent's beach, house near Myrtle Beach.

The food was fantastic, and you have a beautiful state!

It was wonderful! We bought shrimp from this guy I was convinced caught them that same day.

We rode this crazy banana boat and I almost fell off because I was wearing too much lotion! My friends para-sailed (they couldn't talk me into that. Terrified of heights). We had a blast!

We were bathing in the ocean, and suddenly I looked up towards shore, and everybody was waving frantically in at us still in the water. The first thing I thought was SHARK! And I am up to my chin in ocean water! I turned around and there were dolphins literally feet away from us, frolicking in the water. It was incredible, but it completely unnerved me, because as a shark enthusiast, I know that certain species of sharks like to travel with pods of dolphins. Needless to say, I almost sprinted across the water that day.

It was the best 4th of July ever!

Lake Junaluska. My father is a Methodist minister, so we go there at least twice a year.
