forgotten title from childhood...

i’m trying to remember the title of a book i had when i was younger. it was given to me by a neighbor who was a teacher.

i don’t recall what was the plot, or if there was one, but there was a tiny character drawn in all throughout the book (i think just a line drawing in b&w), who would run around eating the letters off the page.

some of the letters were printed in different colors, and there was a definite bias as to which colors would be eaten and which were the tastiest.

is this enough to jog anyone’s memory?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar eats holes in the pages.

Roughly when did you get this book? Was it a picture book or a chapter book?

it wasn’t a childrens’ picture book, like the hungry caterpillar... it was mostly text, like a regular book.

i think i got it when i was around 10, perhaps?

the character drawn on the pages was a person... maybe with a funny hat, like a pointy sleeping cap?

i know i said i didn’t really recall the plot, but my vague memories lend me to think perhaps the book was more about itself and the little character eating its words and letters than that it was telling any story external to itself.

i think the drawn character was vaguely jester-like in appearance... that may account for the point-hat memory i tried to impart, above.

Could be an edition of Ella Minnow Pea or The Wonderful O, they're both about removing letters.

no, they don’t seem to be.

it must not have been a widely published or popular book, i guess.

Do you remember when it might have been written or at least when you read it?
