MESSAGE BOARD 2021

Oops, I forgot to create a new “message board” thread for group announcements and other general stuff at the beginning of the year: here it is!

According to the new system, RG is “looking for an admin”. Don’t panic, it’s simply an artefact of the way we’ve handed on admin privileges in the past via a dummy account called ReadingGloballyAdmin

I’m happy to carry on as admin for the time being and I’ve filed a suitable request.

The new system allows for a group to have multiple admins: I think that would be a good idea for such a large, active group. Admins don’t have a vast amount to do, but it gets problematic if there is something that needs to be done urgently and the sole admin happens to be out of reach (having someone else already in place also helps with succession planning).

If you feel you’d like to help out in that way, please go to the group page and submit yourself in the little box on the top right.

Un missatge de l'administrador del grupUpdate:

In the meantime, I’ve been given Admin status under the new system, with the superpowers set out by Tim in this post: https://www.librarything.com/topic/329652

In practice, this will allow me to continue to update the group page with details of our activities and to pin currently important posts to the top of the list.

Reading Globally has never, as far as I’m aware, needed moderation in the past. I don’t anticipate any need to hide or remove posts in the group now, as we aren’t a quarrelsome bunch, on the whole, and our terms of reference are really so broad that any truly objectionable post would be likely to be a violation of the LT terms of use anyway. But please let me know if you see something where I need to intervene, or if you would like to offer to help as a co-administrator.

Um, its almose end of February. Should I be getting my second quarter theme ready around about now?

feb. 20, 2021, 2:57 pm

>4 cindydavid4: If you like, but please don’t start a new thread for it until a few days before the end of March, otherwise it will distract people from the Q1 theme. I’ve found it quite useful in the past to draft the introductory posts (at least in outline form) offline, while I was collecting relevant stuff together.

>4 cindydavid4: I would definitely agree with >5 thorold: about not posting a new theme thread until it is almost due. In the "bright shiny object" world, it seems to act as an immediate distraction from current themes. Right now we're only just over half way through the first quarter. As thorold mentions though, drafting offline works well for being able to post immediately when it is time.

Oh so this quarter is over on March 31? Ok got it (Im a little slow) I'll start working on my draft and send any questions your way. (Glad I asked!)

For anyone who's not been watching their calendar — it's the start of a new quarter, and hence we have a new quarterly theme to enjoy: AnnieMod is hosting Q4: Translation prize winners here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/335649

Come over and join the discussion!

Even though Q3 is now over, we never actually close our quarterly threads, so if you've still got some Lusophone authors chugging away in the background, don't hesitate to post about them in the Q3 thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/333403

I've revised the longstanding Welcome text on the group page (https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/1244/Reading-Globally), trying to get the message through more succinctly before the dreaded Seymour pokes his ugly head up and cuts me off. If you hate the new version, or have an even better idea, now is your chance to tell me...

While we're about it, any thoughts on the group picture?

New text:
This group is for readers who like to explore the world through books from outside our home regions. If you are a compulsive literary traveler, you've come to the right place! Our quarterly and standing theme read threads are full of great reading ideas, please join in and share yours there too.

Old text:
This group is for readers who, for whatever reason, endeavor to explore the world through great fiction. We don't exclude nonfiction discussion entirely, but we are primarily a fiction group. If you are a compulsive literary traveler, you've come to the right place! Our quarterly and standing theme read threads are full of great reading ideas, please join in and share yours there too.

>9 thorold: I like it but it probably needs to be clearer much higher on the page that England/USA/Australia/Canada/the English speaking world are kinda excluded - for me they ARE outside of my home region for example and Australia is as foreign as is Mosambique sometimes :)

>10 thorold: Oh well :( There went my nice proposal. Never mind. Carry on. I'll go check with the vogons if they have an idea :)

>9 thorold: I like the new text which seems to open up more reading possibilities to anyone contemplating the group.

>9 thorold: >11 AnnieMod: The largely anglophone world does have its own group in Reading Globally II, which is sadly under utilized. Promoting the group higher on the page might work though.

>12 SassyLassy: I know about it but most people don't and it is not clear from our group description that they have their own group. That's all I am saying :)

>11 AnnieMod: >12 SassyLassy: >13 AnnieMod:

Good point — what if instead of “..outside our home regions” it became “…outside the anglophone world”? Or “…outside the English-speaking world” is maybe friendlier.

I could move the cross-reference to RGII up under the Jean Rhys quote, just below the fold. How would that be?

15AnnieMod
nov. 30, 2021, 3:15 pm

Both include other countries as well but precising it will be hard so how about:

"outside the English-speaking world (for the English-speaking world, see Reading Globally II)"

maybe?

Meanwhile, I will attempt to revive our poor sister group. :)

16thorold
nov. 30, 2021, 3:18 pm

>14 thorold: No, sorry, we can’t simply say “anglophone world”, because we don’t want to exclude anglophone Africa, etc. And there’s no easy way I can think of to specify it without the exclusion list. Perhaps better to stick to “outside our home regions” in the header and then put the RGII cross-ref higher to clarify scope.

nov. 30, 2021, 3:24 pm

>16 thorold: Good point about "anglophone world" - I should have phrased it differently but I'm finding it difficult to come up with a term that doesn't involve something like "capitalist anglophone world" or some such laden name!

>13 AnnieMod: Sorry, I didn't mean you didn't know. I think I was directing it at others who might be reading this!

18AnnieMod
nov. 30, 2021, 3:29 pm

>17 SassyLassy: >16 thorold:

So why not be blunt:
"This group is for readers who like to explore the world through books outside of USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand (see Reading Globally II for these country)"? (fix the language if needed - something does not sound right around outside but my head hurts so cannot work out what)

No misunderstandings, no cute ways to go around what we mean.

>17 SassyLassy: I know you did not mean it towards me, no worries. But I did mean that most people don't and that was my point. Plus as one of the resident non-native speakers of English (I do live in the States now but that is a new development - kinda), I have my pet peeves occasionally :)

Editat: nov. 30, 2021, 4:03 pm

>18 AnnieMod: …and my “home region” is within RG territory! It’s all so complicated.

How about:
This group is for readers who like to explore the world through books from “other” parts of the world — i.e. everywhere except UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand for our purposes(*). If you are a compulsive literary traveler, you've come to the right place! Our quarterly and standing theme read threads are full of great reading ideas, please join in and share yours there too.

(*) But don’t worry, you can explore those countries in our sister-group Reading Globally II

I don’t think I can get the note above the fold, though. The second sentence can go if necessary.

Edited to remove excess worlds

I've updated the text, slightly tweaked to appease Seymour:
This group is for readers who like to explore through books from around the world. We arbitrarily cover everywhere except UK, USA, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand; discussions of those countries have a home in our sister-group READING GLOBALLY II. If you are a compulsive literary traveler, you've come to the right place! Our quarterly and standing theme read threads are full of great reading ideas, please join in and share yours there too.

>21 thorold: - I like this version because it works for me. As a Belgian I would have felt left out of the post 9 version, but now I can join both RGI and RGII. The countries of RGII are as foreign to me as any other, so the split feels a bit strange. But I know that the vast majority of RG (and LT) members come from those countries and that the books we read are mainly published there, so I understand the need to make the distinction.

In 2022 it will be five years since Rebecca (rebeccanyc) passed away. As many of you know, she was an active member here in the Reading Globally Group and in some other groups here on LT.

As a tribute to her, I set up a thread in Club Read 2022 with a plan to read all the books she still wanted to read with all her friends here at LT. You are welcome to join, even if you did not have the pleasure of knowing her. Because one thing you can be sure of: Rebecca had exceptionally good taste and read a wide variety of books, so there is probably something for everyone.

You can find the HOPE TO READ SOON: a tribute to Rebeccanyc thread here.
