Hi, so I'm going crazy here. I am pretty sure I own this as an ebook, but none of my keyword searches seem to work...

- Read 5 to 10 years back, but it may have been published much earlier.

- Probably Regency or Victorian era. Set in England, in the countryside.

- The book begins at night, outside (garden? park? close to a pond/lake/fountain?). The heroine wandered by, seems to be in a bad situation, possibly intending self-harm.
- A man appears, this is his property. In the dark he seems old and in bad physical shape. He comforts the woman and ends up offering a marriage of convenience.
- He's actually pretty young but very sick (possibly malaria/"swamp fever" or tuberculosis/"consumption", but I'm not sure). He's about to leave his estate to go die somewhere else, and marries the heroine to leave her his money and land.

- Flashforward to a few years later => the hero is back, recovered thanks to Southern climes (some Mediterranean country?). The hero and heroine both end up having to live with the person they married but didn't know at all.

- We find out at some point that the heroine was pregnant when she met the hero (can't remember if she was running away from an abusive lover/husband? widowed?) and miscarried or lost the baby in early infancy while the hero was away. There's a scene where we see the name and date for the child's death in the family vault/plot and the heroine is worried that the hero will be angry because it obviously wasn't his child.

That's all I can remember... I hope someone can help!
