Hunting

I am somewhat embarrassed to post this question. I hope there are others out there who would like to know, but, like me, really didn't want to ask.
I am ignorant of where I should be looking, and finding, when LT gives us a "hunt." I often know the answer, but as the instructions say, the answer is not always the work. I always then try the author, but other than that, I don't know what categories to search. It's very frustrating to know what work is being referenced, but not being able to earn an acknowledgment for it.
Of course there are many answers that I don't know as well, and I don't expect rewards for them.
Is there a set of instructions anywhere that I have somehow missed?
Thank you.

One of the points about LT treasure hunts is to get users to explore all aspects and areas of the site, not just books and authors. So sometimes the right answer is a tag or a location or a character. That means you'll need to go to common knowledge to find things. Like the award that is in this year's Halloween hunt - that's a common knowledge item. Sometimes it might be a group. Does that make sense?

The answer can be any page on LT. This can include tag pages, CK pages for characters or places, ... Part of the purpose of hunts is to get you looking at the parts of LT you don't usually visit. Usually the clue will give a hint as to what sort of answer to look for.

I learned by not having any idea for the first one I tried to do. So when it was over, I looked up the answers that were posted afterward and got familiar with the type of pages involved. Very educational. Not much help now but very helpful for future hunts.

For now, go thru the clues and hints and follow as best you can, checking authors, Common Knowledge (places, awards, characters, etc), tags, series and such. You may not find all of them, but you should get some.

Be sure to come back when it's over and check out the answers so you will have a better idea for the next one.

The hunts are a lot of fun when you get the hang of them.

Good luck and happy hunting!

In the current hunt (which I'm not doing as it is really not my genre) the first clue says 'this domicile' so I would look for a place. The second says 'this novel', so probably a work. The third is 'this author's work'. They aren't all that clear, but it's worth asking yourself what you are actually searching for.

Oh, and it's always worth remembering that LT's headquarters are in Maine, and there are a fair number of young children around.

If you are completist, check out the hints. Also, this isn't the first time that things have had to be fixed after the hunt has started.

Part of the fun of the hunts is learning all of the different types of pages on LibraryThing.

There's always a main "Talk about LibraryThing" topic for each hunt where people ask for help and provide hints. The one for this halloween hunt is here: https://www.librarything.com/topic/336144. Most people don't get all the answers without some help! And there are many people who are eager to assist anyone who asks for help.

There's also a whole group dedicated solely to hunts, which goes more in-depth on every clue: https://www.librarything.com/ngroups/23170/LibraryThing-Treasure-Hunts

Thank you, everyone. This is all great information and just what I was looking for.

>7 Kathleen828: Also taking a look at Early Reviewers and the LT shop might be the answer. (Sort of like always checking if 0 or 1 is the answer to a math question :-)

Another hint that a book which say less than 50 members has is unlikely to be the answer to any question. So go for popular titles.

And if the first answer that comes to your mind doesn't work then reread the clues to see if they hint to something slightly different. I.e. if Sherlock Holmes isn't the answer then try Dr. Watson :-)

>6 norabelle414: This illustrates one of the things I love about LT. There's always something more to learn. I consider myself an old-timer and pretty good at the hunts. But TIL about the treasure hunt group Thanks for the link!
